Watch: Jeffries, Schumer give remarks on GOP megabill
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) held a news conference Wednesday morning in opposition to President Trump's 'big, beautiful' reconciliation package. The two leaders have been vocal critics of the legislation that includes sweeping cuts to Medicaid and green tax credits, offers an extension on Trump's 2017 tax cuts and raises the debt limit. Earlier this month, Schumer dubbed the bill the 'Well, We're All Going to Die Act.' The House GOP-passed legislation currently faces an uphill battle in the Senate and will likely undergo changes. The presser was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT. Watch the video replay above. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Watch live: Senate Democrats give remarks on Trump agenda's impact on courts
Senate Democrats will speak with reporters on Thursday morning as the party continues to push back against President Trump's 'big, beautiful' spending package. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who will lead the remarks, has been an outspoken critic of the legislation — which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will add $2.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade — and the Trump administration's process for appointing judicial nominees. 'When it comes to judges, Trump only cares about one thing: Will they bow before him? Will the break precedent and overturn rule of law to appease him? That's what he wants, but that's not democracy,' Schumer wrote Wednesday on social media platform X. 'The Senate must reject these MAGA loyalists dressed up as jurists.' On Wednesday, the Democratic leader gave the bill a new nickname: 'Well, We're All Going to Die Act' — a subtle swing at a controversial comment made by his Republican colleague Sen. Joni Ernst (Iowa) related to the Medicaid cuts. The Democrats' remarks are scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. EDT. Watch the live video above. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Schumer renames Trump megabill the ‘Well, We're All Going to Die Act'
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) gave a new name to the 'big, beautiful bill' on Wednesday, calling it the 'Well, We're All Going to Die Act.' Schumer appeared at a press conference alongside Sens. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and stood next to a sign that read 'Well, We're All Going to Die Act,' a reference to previous comments from Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa.) 'The more you look at the bill, at the House bill, the worse it gets,' Schumer said during the press conference. The New York Democrat added later that 'this bill is just tax breaks for the ultra wealthy, paid for by gutting health care for up to 16 million Americans.' During a recent town hall in Butler, Iowa, Ernst defended spending reforms included in the 'big, beautiful bill' passed by the House, including those that would stop people from getting federal benefits if they've entered the country illegally. A person in the crowd attempted to talk over the senator, interrupting her while she was answering questions about changes to Medicaid and SNAP and shouting that people are 'going to die' as a result. 'Well, we're all going to die,' Ernst responded, drawing jeers. Ernst later doubled down on her comments on social media, saying in a Saturday Instagram post that she 'made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that, yes, we are all going to perish from this Earth.' The Hill has reached out to Ernst's office for comment. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
