NYPD Officer Kaya Blanke, played since the series pilot by Carra Patterson, is joining a special law enforcement task force based out of Washington, D.C.; Patterson in turn is stepping down as a series regular for Season 3, but will continue to appear on a guest star basis.
'My character, Kaya Blanke, is embarking on a new adventure as the story continues to unfold, and I am excited to do the same,' Patterson said in a statement to our sister site Deadline. 'But we will see Kaya again — fans will find out what she's been up to in her new role as 'Detective' next season when I come back to guest star and play with Carrie [Preston] and Wendell [Pierce].'
As showrunner Jonathan Tolins told Deadline, Kaya is 'not leaving the world of the show. She's just not going to be with us every day. I don't want to make too much of the change.'
Indeed, Kaya promised Elsbeth that they will still get together for fro-yo now and again. And Patterson's character will appear on next week's Season 2 finale, which brings back nine past guest stars as a newly jailed Elsbeth crosses paths with many of the murderers she put behind bars, inside the Midtown Detention Center.
Prior to boarding Elsbeth, Patterson's TV credits included E!'s The Arrangement, Disney+'s Turner & Hooch, a couple episodes of Apple TV+'s Servant and a guest spot on Paramount+'s Evil, which of course hailed from Elsbeth creators Robert and Michelle King.
