United Way of Erie teaching students importance of 211 line ahead of holiday
February 11 is National 211 Awareness Day and the United Way of Erie County is educating area residents about how they can use this critical resource. 211 Is a free, confidential referral line that connects people to area resources. United Way officials called it the social services equivalent of 911. It's a one-stop call with an organized directory of resources that are locally available 'So it can really range from anything, If someone maybe has a family member struggling with addiction, or if your family needs additional resources if you're having trouble paying your bills, or getting food on the table,' said Mike Jaruszewicz, executive vice president of United Way of Erie County. State police accepting applications for Law and Leadership Academy
If you're between 18 and 38 and interested in a career in law enforcement, Pennsylvania State Police has a program for you. Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Pennsylvania State Police Law and Leadership Academy. The academy provides a firsthand look into the process of becoming a police officer. Asbury Woods releasing new exhibit on PA native species It involves physical training as well as instruction on traffic, criminal investigations, forensic and K-9 work. There is a nationwide shortage of law enforcement officers. The program is the first of its kind in Western PA and is free for those accepted. 'We are traffic stop people, we do detective work, we play therapists sometimes, we play all these and wear all these different hats and I would encourage anybody who wants to learn more to apply,' said Trooper Nicole Ludwig, PSP Troop E recruiting team. New name marks new era for LECOM Medical Center and Behavioral Health Pavilion
New name, new beginning. LECOM Health has rebranded their hospital on the cusp of opening their expansion. They are calling this the new generation of healthcare in Erie with a major focus on technology. State police accepting applications for Law and Leadership Academy After years of being known as Millcreek Community Hospital, the center is beginning its next chapter with a new name. Leaders, officials and physicians gathered Thursday at the Atrium at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for the official unveiling of LECOM Medical Center and Behavioral Health Pavilion. The re-branding signifies the close connection between the hospital and school and the impact they've had on the community as well as the students they train. 'The school was actually started by the hospital but as time has gone on the hospital is the training ground for all of our students,' said Danielle Hansen, regional president of LECOM Health. The program is the only osteopathic academic center in the nation and Hansen said they will put an emphasis on adapting to serve the community. 'We want to be responsive to our community's needs, we want to be responsive to the entire health care landscape and environment changes occur from the way we're reimbursed to the way we treat people and the technologies and innovation associated with that so trying to put all that together and make sure we provide the best services possible to our patients in the community,' Hansen said. Construction on the hospital's addition will be wrapping up soon and they will be ready to open in the next few weeks. Groundbreaking was in March of 2023 and two years later, the new multi-story emergency room is an additional 34,000 square feet that includes an intensive care unit, medical-surgical unit and a cardiac cath lab. 'We'll be offering some services that we haven't offered in the past so that's exciting for us and the services that we continue to offer, we'll be offering at a much more comfortable environment for our patients and a much more efficient workflow for our team,' Hansen went on to say. Asbury Woods releasing new exhibit on PA native species
A local nature center is updating their displays to reflect their annual theme. Asbury Woods is opening a new exhibit in their nature center called Wild About Wildlife! Discovering Pennsylvania's Native Species. Port authority hosting two feedback events on former Erie Coke site This is a part of their annual theme where during 2025, the nature center will be focusing on wildlife and all species that are native to Pennsylvania. The exhibit includes a bird section, an area that compares canines and felines, and a section dedicated to the mustelid family, which includes badgers, otters, and much more. UPMC Hamot hosting Wear Red Heart Health Expo this Friday 'Each year we sort of just brainstorm about the topics that Asbury Woods is in a good place to discuss and we want to make sure that when we choose a topic it really relatable to our local audience because I think its really important for people to connect about how they can protect and preserve things that are local,' said Jennifer Farrar, executive director of the Asbury Woods Nature Center. UPMC Hamot hosting Wear Red Heart Health Expo this Friday
Friday is National Wear Red Day. It's part of a national movement to raise awareness about women's heart health. According to a physician assistant with UPMC Hamot, women aren't always considered at high risk for heart disease and it's more commonly thought of in men, but that's not the case. PA Game Commission releasing 8,400 pheasants for end of season The American Heart Association cites cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in women. 'A lot of those things can get lost in women especially because we're always so focused on other things like breast health especially and so for women it's important to know that we're just as high of a risk for heart disease and strokes as men,' said Samantha DeLucia, a physician assistant at UPMC Hamot.
