Utica's St. Patrick's Day Parade: What to know before you go
UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Utica's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is just one day away, on Saturday, March 15! If you're looking to get into the spirit and attend Saturday's parade, the Utica Police Department has some tips to make your Wearin' Of The Green fun and memorable!
Road Closures
The parade will go down Genesee Street beginning at 10 am with the traditional cannon blast. Marchers will begin at Oneida Square and travel northbound to Columbia Steet. Following the parade, there will be an afterparty along the various establishments along Varick Street.
For those reasons, several closures, detours, and no-parking restrictions will be in effect on several streets in the city for the public's safety.
The following closures, detours, and restrictions will be in effect from 7 am on Saturday until approximately noon:
All four lanes of Genesee Street will be closed to traffic from LaFayette Street to the Memorial Parkway.
Park Avenue, Oneida Street, State Stree,t and Sunset Avenue can be used as detours for north and southbound traffic.
The Memorial Parkway and Oriskany Street can be used as detours for east and westbound traffic and the Genesee Street divide.
A temporary no-parking restriction will be in effect for both sides of Genesee Street from Columbia Street to Hobart Street.
The following closures, detours, and restrictions will be in effect from 2 am on Saturday, March 15 to 7 pm:
Varick Street will be closed from Columbia Street to Court Street.
Sunset Avenue will be closed from Varick Street to Court Street.
Edward Street will be closed from Varick Street to Wasmer Street.
Hamilton Street will be closed from Varick Street to Wiley Street.
Cooper Street will be closed from Varick Street to Huntington Street.
All of the preceding streets will also have temporary no-parking restrictions in effect during the 2 am to 7 pm closures.
The city's parking lot on 716 Varick Street will also be closed to everyone except vendors and peddlers. All vendors and peddlers with a valid permit issued by the city of Utica will be directed to that parking lot.
Safety Information
The Utica Police Department has also released some pertinent safety and security information to make the day safer for everyone:
Open alcoholic beverages in bottles and cans are not allowed; they must be contained in a plastic cup.
Backpacks or any other non-essential baggage is discouraged.
Weapons and fireworks are forbidden.
Drones and unmanned aircraft are not allowed due to federal regulations.
Domestic animals will be allowed at the event. However, due to the number of people attending and a strong canine presence by police, the Utica Police are warning anyone bringing animals to the event to exercise caution.
Taxis and rideshares for people attending the Varick Street afterparty will be allowed to pick up fares at the intersections of Varick Street at Court Street and Columbia Street.
Utica Police are also imploring everyone to be alert and aware of their surroundings and call 911 for all emergencies.
