March 2025: A look back at last month's weather
Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month: Warmest High Temperature: 79 degrees (March 19th) Coolest High Temperature: 32 degrees (March 6th) Coolest Low Temperature: 16 degrees (March 2nd) Warmest Low Temperature: 58 degrees (March 29th and 30th) March was primarily an above-average month temperature-wise. Seven of the thirty-one days reached 70 degrees during a month where our average highs are in the 50s. The peak of the warmth culminated on March 19th, when Beckley reached 79 degrees, tying the old daily record. That's just a few degrees off the all-time March high temperature of 85 degrees set on March 28th, 2020. Vegetables to plant in spring For the month, our average temperature in March was 47.3 degrees, which was about 4.4 degrees warmer than average. That's not quite warm enough to reach the top ten warmest March months on record for Beckley, but it's not far off. March 2025 was a historically dry month in Beckley, ranking as the sixth driest March on record, following the wettest February on record. On average, Beckley receives just over four inches of rain, but March 2025 featured less than half of that total, coming in at 1.65″ of rain. Combined with very warm and at times breezy conditions and we had brush fires pop up in southern West Virginia and Virginia periodically during the month. Not a single day featured a half inch of rain in Beckley during the month of March. How to protect your home from brush fires Wettest Day: 0.48″ (March 5th) Despite the dry month in March, Beckley is still well above normal for rainfall so far in 2025 due to the historically wet month of February and still above-average precipitation during the month of January. Snowiest Day: 0.5″ (March 6th) Monthly Snowfall: 1.0″ (7.9 inches BELOW average) Snowfall was very limited due to above-average conditions and a dry pattern overall during the month of March. Beckley received only about 12% of its usual snow for the month. That enabled Beckley to fall slightly below average in snowfall for the season after above average snowfall during the first half of the snowy season. The full moon for March is the Worm Moon, which took place on March 14th. Generally warm and dry conditions led to good viewing opportunities. In addition, brush fire activity led to a bit of a smoky hue around the moon at times when it was near full. Launched in 2022, #WeatherTogether is a dedicated community photo album hosted by 59News and StormTracker 59 to allow viewers to submit weather photos directly to us that we can share on all our platforms on-air or online. These photos are also showcased in our web-based photo album on our site for all to see and enjoy! Any photo of interesting weather, storm damage, snowfall, pets playing in puddles or snow and the likes are all welcomed! We hope to use this to showcase the beauty of the two Virginias through the eyes of our viewers and the vastly dynamic weather we see because we think there is no place more beautiful than here. Blood Worm Moon: Total Lunar Eclipse set to delight two Virginia's Thursday Night
GHENT, WV (WVNS) — A lunar eclipse will fall across North America Thursday night, March 13th through dawn Friday, March 14th. The March Full moon, known as the Worm Moon according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, comes at a time of year when winter is ending and spring begins. Folklore points the March full moon being the closest to the earthworms arrival and dates back to the late 1700s. What makes the Worm Moon special this year is its position behind the Earth. The path of the moon the night of Thursday, March 13th will take it through our shadow for a total lunar eclipse. When the moon ducks behind our shadow, we can watch the phases of the moon in just a few hours instead of over a whole month. Unlike a solar eclipse, like in April 2024, when the moon shadow is cast on the Earth surface, a lunar eclipse is when the Earth's shadow is cast upon the moon. Beginning at 11:57 pm, Thursday, March 13th the moon will encounter our shadow where the Penumbral Eclipse Begins. The Penumbra is a part of our shadow where the Earth only partially covers the sunlight. An area where some sunlight will still light up the moon but you'll notice a dimmer appearance. Once the moon begins to enter the umbra or part of the shadow where all light is blocked, around 1:09am Friday, March 14th, we'll see our shadow move across the moons surface. From a full moon phase to half then crescent moon in just over an hour as the moon slips behind us. When the moon is completely within the umbra, totality will occur at 2:26 am and last through 3:31am. During this time, sunlight is still passing through our atmosphere and as it does blue light is scattered more by the chemical make up of our atmosphere (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and CO2) . The reason why our sky appears more blue to us on the surface is because this blue light is reflected more. As the light leaves earth it leaves some blue light behind. As this red shifted light passes through the atmosphere, it'll find the moon in our shadow changing its appearance to a dark, ruby red for just over an hour. As the moon moves out of the umbra, we'll once again see the sunlight hit the moon as the phases work in reverse. From a crescent back to half, and ending as a full moon ending the eclipse at 4:47am. The moon will appear slightly dim until it exits our shadow completely at 6 am. By this time, the moon will be low on the western horizon with moonset time at 7:41am. At least the forecast is looking to be in our favor with more clear skies than not. A few clouds but overall, great viewing weather. With the warmer than average days, our nights won't be a chilly making this lunar eclipse one to get out for!
