Webb City police offer free child I.D. kits at farmers market
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Fresh produce wasn't the only thing parents could get at the Webb City Farmers Market today. The Webb City Police Department made an appearance, handing out free Child I.D. kits at the market's free kids meal. Patrol Lieutenant Travis Osterman tells us for around eight years now, the department has worked to pass out kits several times a month during the summer. Each kit helps parents collect information that police might need to know in an emergency. 'It's just a way that parents can gather and maintain a current photograph, fingerprints, and uh, dental documentation for their kiddos in case they were to become missing,' said Travis Osterman, Webb City Patrol Lieutenant. Parents can pick up ID kits for their children at the Webb City Police Department at 211 West Broadway Street. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Webb City groups donate to provide service dogs to veterans
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Thanks to the cooperation of five groups in Webb City, another area veteran will be paired up with his own highly trained service dog in the coming year. Jimmy Burgess and his service dog, Riley, were on hand at the building in Webb City that houses the American Legion Post 322 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7630 on Friday morning to accept a check on behalf of Heartland Canines for Veterans for $25,000 from the Elks Lodge of Webb City, the American Legion post, the VFW post, the Women's Auxiliary for the American Legion post and the Dawson Heritage Foundation. Burgess said the money will go to pay for the training of another service dog, which generally costs about $19,500, and to pay for Burgess to be trained as a master trainer of service dogs. 'We want to start training dogs internally instead of always having an outside trainer,' Burgess said. 'Right now, we outsource our service training, but that costs us quite a bit of money and it limits the number of dogs we can train in any certain timespan depending on the money we have to spend. 'We figured with it being our 10th year, it was time for us to get our own internal plan for training.' Burgess said this is the second year these particular groups have raised money for Heartland Canines in one of their 'One of Us' campaigns. He said the goal at Heartland Canines is to have one master trainer so he can train others to train service dogs. 'So the idea behind having an internal trainer is that we can continue to train because I'm already on staff,' Burgess said. 'Also, we're going to start an actual veteran training program so I'll be able to train other veterans in the dog-training community' Burgess said Heartland Canines will be celebrating the graduation of another service dog and the creation of a veteran-service dog team at the coming Veterans Outreach Night hosted by the Joplin Outlaws at Joe Becker Stadium on Saturday, June 14. Gates open at 5 p.m., and before the game, Burgess and his staff will introduce the new team. The dog was trained thanks to a donation by Jack Henry and Associates. 988 helpline offers crisis support for first responders
WEBB CITY, Mo. — First responders see tragedy on a daily basis, taking a toll on their mental health. Police officers we spoke with tell us the key is separating themselves from those stressful situations. That can come in several forms, like time with friends and family. There's also professional help, like speaking with a chaplain, for support in times of need. 988 helpline offers crisis support for first responders Torch run unites local law enforcement for Special Olympics Webb City honored for community-law enforcement partnership Golden Lion Award: Emma Hudson Volunteers restore homes for foster families in southwest Missouri 'Coping mechanisms is I always tell people take the bad days as they come and you take the good days as they come I think it's very important to process what you see,' said Tabatha Love, Webb City PD. Love says in her experience that being open about mental health is one of the most important things first responders can do. If a first responder is in a time of crisis, they can always call 988 for immediate assistance. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Golden Lion Award: Emma Hudson
WEBB CITY, Mo. — The end of the school year is just days away. With it comes our final Golden Lion Award winner of the year. 'I'm a senior at Webb City High School,' said Emma Hudson, WCHS senior. Emma Hudson's time on campus isn't just class time and homework. 'I've been in FBLA for four years, and I've done DECA for three years. So those are business clubs that we have here at the high school. I was involved with FTA for three years. And then I help with Special Olympics,' said Hudson. Like track meets at Webb City High School. Emma is a unified buddy, meaning she's committed to helping students with disabilities. 'We have unified classes, where we have our PE class. They do their activities and everything, and us buddies trying to help motivate them. We work with them just make sure that they're having fun. And then whenever we have Special Olympics, where they're cheering them on,' said Hudson. Emma has also spent extra time with the Future Business Leaders of America, including hosting Webb City's first Business Bash. 'We were able to bring in some community members and have kids from Neosho come and learn about business. It's really helped our school as well kind of introduce kids to business and some new career pathways that they hadn't really realized,' said Hudson. She also helps with younger students as part of the cadet teaching program. Webb City teacher Amanda Eckols says that's just one reason Emma is a great example of a Golden Lion. 'She's very much a leader by doing rather than a leader by saying. She doesn't have the loudest voice. Uh, she doesn't stand up and tell everybody else what to do. She jumps in and has that servant leadership. That is a good role model for others,' said Amanda Eckols, WCHS teacher.
