Texans QB C.J. Stroud has shoulder soreness, not throwing at OTAs

Hear this story Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has not been doing the thing he's best known for – throwing the football – lately. According to multiple reports Tuesday, Stroud is still not throwing at the penultimate day of the Texans' offseason organized team activities (OTAs) while he deals with a sore shoulder. Said Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans: "There's no concerns with C.J. It's just general soreness. We're taking extra precaution with him, but he'll be good to go. No concerns on my end there." Shoulder issues are not new for Stroud. In 2021, during his redshirt freshman year at Ohio State, the former Buckeye missed his team's Week 4 meeting with Akron while dealing with a shoulder injury. HOUSTON TEXANS NEWS: Veteran CB Ronald Darby retiring at age 31 "[T]here was still kind of this feeling that he had that he really couldn't shake, and so maybe rest is something that would go a long way for him," Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said at the time. Stroud returned to action one week later and didn't miss another game for the remainder of his collegiate career. However, the 2023 No. 2 overall pick had another issue with his shoulder a couple of years later, early in his rookie season. In the lead-up to a Week 2 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, Stroud was listed on the injury report as questionable to play with a right shoulder injury. He went on to make the start, completing 30 of 47 pass attempts for 384 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-31 loss. Stroud has only ever missed two games so far in his two-year pro career, both because of a concussion he suffered his rookie year in a Week 14 clash with the New York Jets. He played (and started) in every game during his sophomore campaign last year. Whether his current shoulder soreness will become a bigger problem still remains to be seen. Both of his previous run-ins with shoulder issues came at early points in those seasons, so perhaps the latest case is once again a matter of getting some of the rust off.

Xavier Legette "honing in" on catching the ball after costly drops as a rookie

Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette had 49 catches last year, but the most memorable moment of the first-round pick's rookie season was not a positive one. Legette dropped a Bryce Young pass that would have given the Panthers a lead over the Eagles in the final minute of a Week 14 game. That drop stood out, but it wasn't the only one that Legette had as a rookie. There were seven dropped passes overall and Legette said on Tuesday that he watched tape of all 84 of his targets from last season as part of the process of cutting down on them this time around. 'Me getting open, that wasn't a problem. It was just honing into to really catching the ball on the drops,' Legette said, via the team's website. 'Mainly just trying to catch it more with my hands and letting it get into my body or crossing my eyes.' The Panthers offense finished the 2024 season on an upswing and they added wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan to the mix in the first round of the draft. Legette said he thinks that will create 'a problem either way' for opposing defenses, but it will be an easier one for them to solve if Legette can't show more of a knack for holding onto the ball.

10 Ravens who could make the most-improved list in 2025

10 Ravens who could make the most-improved list in 2025 With OTAs fast approaching and training camp on the horizon, we're looking at ten Ravens who could make the most improved list The NFL schedule was released on Wednesday night, and the Ravens are scheduled for four prime-time games, including a rare "Monday Night Football" game in Baltimore against the Detroit Lions in Week 3. The Ravens are amid a Super Bowl window and feel confident after signing Derrick Henry to a contract extension. Baltimore added depth to a much-improved defense and will debut a new kicker for the first time in over a decade. With OTAs approaching and training camp looming, we're looking at ten players who could make the most improved list in 2025. RB Keaton Mitchell There are only so many carries with Derrick Henry and Justice Hill on the roster, but Mitchell is a home run hitter. Mitchell will look to get back to full speed after missing much of the season recovering from a knee injury that ended his 2023 campaign. DB T.J. Tampa Tampa only played seven games in his 2024 rookie campaign season. Hampered by an ankle injury that plagued him since Oct. 24, the former Iowa State star couldn't contribute in his first year, but he offers height, length, speed, and physicality. OL Daniel Faalele After moving from offensive tackle to offensive guard, Faalele was named a Pro Bowl alternate after surrendering one sack and 30 pressures in 504 pass-blocking opportunities last season. An off-season working out with Ronnie Stanley should allow Faalele to take the next steps. LB Trenton Simpson With Malik Harrison and Chris Board departing in free agency, John Harbaugh confirmed that Simpson would be first up in the battle at linebacker. Simpson was productive over Baltimore's first 11 games, logging 65 tackles (34 solo), but he was a liability in the passing game. Simpson was entirely out of the Ravens' inside-linebacker rotation following the Week 14 bye, and he was limited to special teams during Baltimore's two-game postseason run. Simpson finished the 2024 regular season with 73 tackles (40 solo), including 1.5 sacks, four pass defenses, and one fumble recovery across 17 games. OL Andrew Voorhees Vorhees was the initial starter at left guard in 2024 before suffering an injury and getting benched in favor of Patrick Mekari for Weeks 4 and 5, before the move was made permanent. The former USC star should get the nod heading into training camp. OLB David Ojabo Things can only go up for Ojabo after he played in 13 games last season. He has four sacks in his first three seasons,, and it's now or never for the former Michigan pass rusher. OLB Adisa Isaac A 2024 third-round pick, Adisa Isaac saw action in four games and played 32 defensive snaps, as his NFL debut was delayed by a hamstring issue, which sidelined him for the Ravens' first two games. OLB Tavius Robinson The former Ole Miss pass rusher had 3.5 sacks and 12 QB hits in a reserve role last season. DB Beau Brade Last summer, Brade made the Ravens' 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie free agent after starring at River Hill High School and the University of Maryland. In the games he appeared in, Brade was mainly relegated to special teams roles and only saw the field on defense late in the fourth quarter of games where victory was well in hand. Braden recorded just three total tackles, including just one solo, and played 207 snaps on special teams compared to just 11 on defense. He was inactive for both playoff games. DB Sanoussi Kane Kane is a thumper who also stood out on defense in the preseason. According to Pro Football Focus, he did not allow a single reception on 30 coverage snaps, produced a coverage grade of 73.4, and recorded a forced incompletion and a tackle for loss.

Jonathon Brooks to miss 2025 NFL season: Panthers prioritize rookie's recovery

The Carolina Panthers have placed running back Jonathon Brooks on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, ruling him out for the entire 2025 season, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The decision follows Brooks' second ACL tear in his right knee, suffered during a Week 14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. The rookie, selected 46th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, underwent surgery in January and faces a lengthy recovery. Brooks, a former Texas Longhorn, showed promise in limited action, carrying the ball nine times before the injury. His absence is a blow to Carolina's backfield, but the Panthers are prioritizing his long-term health. Chuba Hubbard, fresh off a contract extension, will lead the running game, being backed up by the signing of Rico Dowdle to a one-year deal. Trevor Etienne and Raheem Blackshear provide additional depth. Advertisement The Panthers' conservative approach appears to be what is best for Brooks' knee durability, with a potential return targeted for 2026 training camp. Fans remain hopeful that the 21-year-old can reclaim his place in Carolina's backfield in the future. Cowboys CB whose gaffe lost game signs with Titans to add on to $6 million in earnings

The key figure in one of the Cowboys' most painful losses of 2024 has found a new home. And he'll be reunited there with the coach who stood by him in his darkest moment. Cornerback Amani Oruwariye, who appeared in seven games for the Cowboys last season and made four starts, will sign with the Tennessee Titans, per NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The former fifth-round draft pick had been with the Lions, Giants, and Jaguars prior to joining Dallas's practice squad ahead of the 2024 season. Advertisement In Tennessee, Oruwariye will provide veteran experience in the secondary, but he will also likely be a regular contributor on special teams. Longtime special teams coordinator John Fassel will be in his first year with the Titans after serving in that role for five seasons with the Cowboys. Fassel was vocal in defending Oruwariye after a blocked punt turned disastrous late in the team's Week 14 primetime game last season against Cincinnati. With the score tied and two minutes to play, Cowboys linebacker Nick Vigil blocked a Bengals punt. When the ball managed to travel beyond the line of scrimmage, it became live. Left alone, it would have been whistled dead, and Dallas would have taken possession, already within kicker Brandon Aubrey's range. Advertisement But Oruwariye, who had just re-joined the active roster a few hours earlier, tried to grab the bouncing ball, unaware of what had happened. He mishandled the ball, and the Bengals recovered. They would go on to score moments later and seal the 27-20 win, sending Dallas to 5-8. "He just reacted like I would: 'see ball, get ball,'" Fassel told reporters afterward. "I think I attribute it to sometimes, special teams is the Wild, Wild West." Fassel and his Cowboys teammates were adamant that the fluke play shouldn't define Oruwariye as a player. "[I] asked him how he was doing, word for word, and he said, 'I'm doing good,'" Fassel said. "And I said 'Good, because you should be doing good, you have no reason to think that you cost us the game, or that you made a mistake, or that you let the team down.'" Advertisement Oruwariye had been the hero in Week 4, when his interception of a pass intended for Jalin Hyatt with five seconds to play put the final nail in the coffin of the Cowboys' 20-15 win over the Giants. The 29-year-old, who played is college ball at Penn State, has earned $6.8 million with four teams over six seasons in the NFL. Now Oruwariye he'll begin his seventh year looking to start over once again. Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans!
