Woman found dead in river as family is unable to reach her, PA coroner says
A body recovered from a Pennsylvania river has been identified as a woman who was reported missing a day later, officials said.
The Lancaster County Coroner's Office said the body was found floating in the Susquehanna River in West Hempfield Township on April 18. Authorities, however, were unable to identity the victim.
The next day, 33-year-old April Wefler, of Lancaster, was reported missing by her family, the coroner said.
'They were unable to make contact with her, and she failed to report for work,' according to the coroner's report. 'The last known contact with Wefler was on April 15.'
Her sister, Eileen Druzynski, said in a Facebook post that when Wefler's apartment was checked, 'it appeared she left unexpectedly, as drawers and cabinets were open.'
The coroner has now identified Wefler as the body found in the river. An April 21 autopsy revealed she died of 'fresh water drowning,' the coroner said, adding that an investigation into her death remains ongoing.
It's unclear how she ended up in the water.
Wefler was described by one co-worker as 'a super nice young lady,' who would not not 'just disappear on her own.'
The Lancaster County Board of Elections said Wefler 'administered poll worker training for the county,' according to Harrisburg 100.
