Pickup truck strikes Weis location in York County, swipes ATM
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A pickup truck struck the front of a Weis Markets location in York County, and thieves made off with the ATM inside. Weis Markets said in a statement to abc27 News the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. Thursday. Three employees were on site at the time and none were hurt. 'Due to the damage, the store was closed for several hours,' a Weis spokesperson said. 'It reopened shortly before 10 a.m. We have cleaned up broken glass and made temporary repairs to the store front. In the coming weeks, we will make permanent repairs.' Kooky inflatable art installation coming to WA first time
If you've ever wanted to know what a giant inflatable doing a backflip off the second floor of a building looks like, well, you won't be guessing for much longer. Claremont Quarter is just six days away from welcoming Airship Orchestra, a 16-strong cast of kooky inflatable characters — the largest up to 8m tall — for four weeks, fresh from its last stop in the San Francisco Balloon Museum. Alongside the installation by award-winning Melbourne studio ENESS is a 6m long floor mural, where children (and grown-ups) can colour in the mystical tribe of otherworldly characters, the first time the interactive aspect has been introduced as part of the exhibit. Your local paper, whenever you want it. The characters will be waiting for visitors indoors and outdoors in Claremont Quarter and, in full, extends over a 500sqm area. The sound experience is its own spatial environment, immersing visitors in a score synced with light, creating an adventure that is aesthetically dynamic both day and night. ENESS artist and founder Nimrod Weis, who will be making his maiden voayge to WA for the exhibition, said Airship Orchestra was a truly collaborative and experiential moment that demonstrates art and technology colliding. 'Pieces like Airship Orchestra completely transcend the boundaries of language and age and demographic and create this intriguing and innocent world of wonder for people to enter,' Weis said. 'The connection between people and the characters — the connection between families, friends, and strangers — is incredibly pure and an essential proposition to explore particularly given the saturation of screens in our lives. 'We've been wanting to find an exhibition opportunity where people can colour in one of our installations for a long time. We are particularly excited about children's contribution to our artwork where they have the chance to get involved and work together to form something big and meaningful of which they can be proud.' If the charming and enchanting inflatables seem familiar, ENESS first made its mark in Perth with a pack of illuminated canines that took over Hillarys Boat Harbour for the WA premiere of interactive art installation, the Lost Dogs' Disco — a key attraction at the 2022 Joondalup Festival. Festivalgoers delighted in playing among the litter of bull terriers, dachshunds and poodles, where sensors brought the hounds to life with music, sound and light. ENESS also showcased another creation at last year's Subi Blooms Festival. With this being Airship Orchestra's debut at a shopping centre in WA, Claremont Quarter hopes the event will be a memorable experience filled with magic, wonder and delight for visitors. 'We cannot wait for everyone to get involved in the Airship Colour Zone,' Claremont Quarter senior marketing manager Claire Ridley said. 'Finding opportunities to pause, to engage with our friends and family and just explore that child-like sense of wonder no matter your age is incredibly special and very important these days.' Weis Markets' Q1 FY25 performance in line with expectations
Mid-Atlantic US food retailer Weis Markets has recorded total revenue of $1.2bn in the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal 2025 (FY25) - 1.6% up from the $1.18bn reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Net income for Weis Markets in the 13-week quarter amounted to $20.48m, a decrease from the $23.17m recorded in Q1 FY24. Its diluted earnings per share for the quarter stood at $0.76, a decline from the $0.86 reported during the same period of the previous year. The retailer's operating income also saw a downturn, coming in at $23.04m for Q1 FY25, compared to $27.36m during Q1 FY24. However, gross profit on sales showed improvement, totalling $299.5m in Q1 FY25 from $295.01m in the previous year's corresponding quarter. Weis Markets chairman, president and CEO Jonathan Weis stated: "Our first quarter 2025 results, adjusted for the year-on-year Easter holiday shift, are in line with our expectations despite the challenges of an uncertain macroeconomic environment. "During the quarter, our net sales benefited from significant regional weather events, continuing product price investments, and the increased tempo of our loyalty marketing rewards programme. In addition, we continue to make strategic cost investments in our associates and technologies that improve efficiencies and enhance customer experience. We remain truly grateful to our associates for their efforts to provide excellent service to our customers." Weis Markets plans to construct four new stores exceeding 60,000ft² each with modern features and sustainable technologies in 2025. The company anticipates opening three stores by the end of the year, and the fourth early in 2026. They will be located in Maryland's Lake Linganore, Charlotte Hall and Waldorf communities, and in Middletown, Delaware. "In 2024, we completed work on 17 projects including six major remodels, nine minor remodels and two fuel centres," stated Weis. The retailer operates 198 stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. Weis Earth Science Museum could be on move after Winnebago County approves resolution
MENASHA, Wis. (WFRV) – We're getting a better idea of what the future of the UW Oshkosh Fox Cities campus will look like, but not everybody loves what they're hearing. On Tuesday night, Winnebago County supervisors approved a resolution to buy Outagamie County's share of the UWO Fox Cities campus. The two counties have jointly operated the campus for decades, but the imminent closure of the campus for higher education purposes has created lots of uncertainty. Under the terms of the new agreement, Winnebago County must use the campus for a 'public use' for two years. The Barlow Planetarium, performing arts center, childcare center and other assets would continue to operate on campus. Kaukauna shuts out Fond Du Lac, stays perfect on season Winnebago County officials will buy Outagamie County's share of the campus for $1. 'Looking at the number of cultural assets that there are and the division of them we're coming out way farther ahead than I thought we were going to,' said Winnebago County supervisor John Hinz. Outagamie County would take control of the Weis Earth Science Museum and move it inside the History Museum at the Castle in downtown Appleton. It's this part of the agreement that many people don't like. 'The residents of the Fox Valley and Winnebago County aren't served by sequestering the contents of the earth science museum into a museum of history,' said Cindy Duckert during the public comment section of the meeting. 'I believe its current configuration and setup are best served for the community around that area,' said UWO geology student Jonah Habeck. 'To move it would be harmful to that process, which I think is quite unnecessary.' Weis Earth Science Museum officials have a petition filled with hundreds of signatures from people who also oppose this move. They also have received dozens of letters from other geology museums and higher education geology programs expressing support for the Weis Earth Science Museum staying put. Weis Earth Science Museum officials said the museum has thrived in its current location. They also believe that being next to the Barlow Planetarium is important because the close proximity helps draw visitors who want to hit two spots on the same day. History Museum at the Castle officials assure residents that they will take good care of the Weis Earth Science Museum exhibits. 'I understand those concerns, change is always hard,' said History Museum at the Castle executive director Dustin Mack. 'The reason we got involved was to offer a path forward for the Weis.' Green Bay to double parking ramp rates during NFL Draft 'I think the whole thing is ridiculous, we shouldn't be in this situation,' said Don Mikulic who is a curator for the Weis Earth Science Museum. 'These are plans that were developed in secret. Outagamie County last week had a secret meeting. If they were interested in the benefit of the community and what's fair and reasonable behavior they would have involved people immediately.' BOCES holds annual Job Readiness Fair
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – BOCES students held mock job interviews with dozens of local companies, to get ready for the real thing. Wednesday was BOCES' annual Job Readiness Fair. Students bring their resumes and talk with local job seekers about what it takes to get into their line of work. Some of the local businesses included Visions, the Rumble Ponies, Weis, Raymond, and others. It's a chance for the students to get real interview experience and hear constructive criticism from the interviewers themselves. Student Unique Wood says the job fair helped her become more confident in her interviewing skills, like eye contact and holding a conversation. 'Even with this not being an actual, real job setting, it still has the same effects of it I guess I'd say. You still want to again, have that confidence, you still want to talk to them the same way, treat them the same way. Treat them as if you were going in there like you're getting a job. Like you're going there to win a job,' said Wood. Wood says she interviewed with Visions and Weis markets and both went well. The employers setup displays, sharing information about their careers and the education and training you need to get there.
