2 arrested for menacing couple, Weld County deputy and barricading inside home

DENVER (KDVR) — A 37-year-old man and his wife were arrested in Weld County after the man allegedly menaced a deputy and a couple while driving in the early morning hours on Monday. The Weld County Sheriff's Office first encountered the man, identified as Jose Mejia, at 3:30 a.m. on Monday. A deputy reported that he was being tailgated by a blue sedan. 2 suspects arrested on first-degree murder charges in deadly Aurora parking lot shooting The man behind the wheel was allegedly driving aggressively, speeding up and slowing whenever the deputy sped up or slowed, and failed to stop at the stop sign at the corner of 25th Avenue and O Street. The deputy continued to the sheriff's office and reported the driver pulled up alongside him, driving eastbound in the westbound lane. The vehicle was last seen by the deputy on Monday morning near the Platte Valley Detention Center and heading west. 'Minutes later' a couple called law enforcement and said a man in a blue sedan had pointed a gun at them and followed them on O Street. He allegedly followed the couple to 8th Avenue and D Street, pulled alongside their vehicle's passenger side and pointed a handgun at the passenger. The couple 'sped away,' according to the Greeley Police Department, but heard several gunshots at the same time. Nearby officers heard the gunshots as well. The department reported that an officer saw the blue sedan pull into the gas station at the corner of 35th Avenue and 4th Street and tried to pull the vehicle over. The man fled, according to Greeley police, driving south on 35th Avenue. The agency said that Mejia was driving at a high rate of speed and flattened both passenger-side tires during the pursuit. Mejia pulled into a townhome subdivision in the 2100 block of 35th Avenue, ran into one of the townhomes with a door already open, and shut it behind him, the Greeley police reported. Aurora police issue street racing warning: 'You will be caught' At 4:25 a.m., the department sent a Reverse911 call to the neighborhood's residents. Local schools were placed on a secure status. The safety precautions were lifted at 10:34 a.m. Mejia was arrested at 9:25 a.m., according to the agency, and is facing charges of menacing, vehicular eluding, illegal discharge of a weapon, reckless endangerment, obstruction of police and failure to leave premises upon request of a peace officer. Mejia's wife, Elena Garza-Mejia, 41, was also arrested. She is facing charges of obstruction of a police officer and failure to leave premises upon request of a peace officer. The agency is still investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Elizabeth Finch at 970-350-9682. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2 of 3 killed in Weld County crash identified by coroner

DENVER (KDVR) — Three people were killed in a crash in Weld County on Wednesday, and the Coroner's office released two of their identities on Friday. The crash happened around 3 p.m. on Highway 85 in Platteville. Colorado State Patrol and the Weld County Sheriff's Office said that a GMC Yukon was driving northbound on Highway 85 and crossed into oncoming traffic at Highway 60, crashing head-on with a Toyota 4Runner. The crash caused a gas leak and a fire. CSP said troopers tried to separate the burning vehicles using a push bumper and attempted to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, but all occupants in the vehicles died. The driver of the Yukon was identified as Kayla Dickinson, 37, of Evans. The passenger's identity has not been released pending next-of-kin notification. The driver of the 4Runner was identified as Christine Ann Schwarz, 57, of Mead. A deputy was treated for minor injuries on the scene and a CSP cruiser was damaged in efforts to separate the vehicles. The Weld County School District RE-1 told FOX31 on Friday that a La Salle North Valley Middle School seventh-grade science teacher was among those who died in the crash. The school's website lists Christine Schwarz among its staff. The school's superintendent told FOX31's Vicente Arenas in an interview that the district canceled classes on Thursday and Friday after the crash. Several members of the small community told Arenas that the death has hit the community hard. According to the Colorado Department of Education, there are about 1,700 students in the entire district, which includes six schools spread across three towns on Highway 85. CSP said in a press release Thursday that deputies with the Weld County Sheriff's Office were pursuing a suspected stolen GMC Yukon on northbound Highway 85 before the crash. The sheriff's office said in a release Thursday that a deputy had pulled the driver over, and when the deputy approached the vehicle, they drove off at a high rate of speed. At some point while the deputy was trying to locate the vehicle, WCSO said the fleeing driver crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the other vehicle. The Weld County Sheriff's Office told FOX31's Vicente Arenas that they are not sure if the crash was related to a pursuit, but an investigation is underway. CSP's Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash, and the sheriff's office said it is conducting an internal investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash. FOX31 is working to gather more information and will provide updates. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Weld County Sheriff's Office says it will carry out new gun law duties while opposing law

DENVER (KDVR) — The Weld County Sheriff's Office said Monday that while it opposes the semiautomatic gun regulation that was signed into law, it will begin constructing a plan to fulfill the duties outlined for sheriff's offices in the measure. The hotly contested bill was signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis on Thursday and requires training and a permit to be obtained by people who are seeking to buy a semiautomatic firearm with a detachable magazine in Colorado. It also bans the sale and purchase of rapid-fire conversion devices. On Monday, the Weld County Sheriff's Office revoiced its strong opposition to the new law, and the Weld County Board of County Commissioners unanimously supported a resolution submitted by Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams expressing such opposition. 'Unfortunately, Governor Polis signed SB 25-003 on April 10th of 2025, and the bill goes into effect on August 1st, 2026,' the Weld County Sheriff's Office said in a release. 'This bill will have a direct impact on the citizens of Weld County and the duties of the Weld County Sheriff's Office.' Governor signs bill requiring training for semiautomatic guns, banning rapid-fire conversion devices The office noted that refusing to perform the duties outlined in the legislation would 'have a negative impact' on Weld County citizens, and would 'essentially act as another impediment to the rights guaranteed in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.' Because of this, the sheriff's office said it will begin working on a plan to accommodate the process and will be including any necessary staff, equipment or other needs in the agency's 2026 budget request to the Board of County Commissioners. 'To make it abundantly clear, Sheriff Reams has stated that Senate Bill 25-003 will do nothing to reduce crimes involving guns in Colorado and is simply an affront to citizen's efforts to exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights,' the sheriff's office stated on X.
