WellSpan Health sues Inch & Co. to transfer ownership of York County sports complex
YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — Nearly eight months after Inch & Co. broke ground on a new premier sporting complex in York County, they are being sued by the sponsor of the project, WellSpan Health. abc27 news reported back in September 2024, when the York County-based Inch & Co. first broke ground on a new 243,000-square-foot WellSpan Sports Complex located at 275 East Seventh Avenue. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The new complex was set to debut in early 2026, but that may no longer be the case. Now, nearly eight months later, WellSpan Health has filed a lawsuit against Inch & Co. to seize ownership of the future sporting complex property after Inch & Co. failed to hold up its end of the two parties' agreement. Attached below is the full lawsuit: DocumentHandlerDownload According to the lawsuit, which was filed on April 21, 2025, WellSpan entered into an agreement with Inch & Co. stating that the construction company was to raise a certain amount of money from third-party investors, following WellSpan's $5 million investment. WellSpan says Inch & Co. had nine months from the 'Offering Date' to raise these funds, which they did not do. As a result of this breach of contract, WellSpan wants Inch & Co. to transfer to them ownership of the sporting complex property in addition to having them 'pay all costs associated with the respective transfer, including without limitation, transfer taxes, recording fees, and legal expenses.' Crumbl Cookies sued for nearly $24 million; here's why In the lawsuit, WellSpan says on March 4, 2025, Inch & Co. acknowledged their contractual obligations, but requested that WellSpan reimburse them for incurred costs related to the project's design, totaling $230,574.09. Furthermore, Inch & Co. requested that they have an opportunity to purchase the property back from WellSpan if they were able to raise the funds needed for the project. WellSpan denied these requests. In response to the lawsuit, WellSpan told abc27 News the following: WellSpan is no longer a sponsor of what was going to be called the WellSpan Sports Complex. This was an exciting opportunity for WellSpan to provide local and regional athletes with expert medical care provided by WellSpan Sports and Orthopedic Care. After significant time expended in joint planning, we are disappointed this specific effort could not come to fruition. WellSpan Health abc27 News also reached out to Inch & Co. for more information, but did not hear back at the time of this publication. This is a developing story. WellSpan cancels ‘Black Men in White Coats' summit amid anti-DEI mandates
(WHTM) — WellSpan has announced they have cancelled their 'Black Men In White Coats' summit due to 'risks to federal funding for both healthcare and educational organizations.' WellSpan announced that it would be terminating the initiative amid the recent mandates enacted by President Donald Trump targeting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs among American institutions. The hospital said they are reimagining a future event for students looking to enter the medical field. WellSpan's full statement is below: This event is one of dozens of healthcare career opportunities that WellSpan supports annually across Central Pennsylvania. Our commitment to healthcare career exploration for all students remains strong as evidenced by outreach programs and internal educational programs including a nursing and medical school as well as physician residency programs. However, current risks to federal funding for both healthcare and educational organizations has created the need to cancel the May event. We are reimagining a future event focused on students interested in a career in medicine. Our clinicians regularly go into schools to speak, we attend career events at local schools, we host Children's Wellness Days, and we invite students into our facilities for shadowing experiences to learn more. In fact, this week, WellSpan York Hospital will host more than 80 students from local high schools who have signed up for a day of hands-on experiences showcasing careers in health care. The initiative, called T.E.A.C.H. (Training and Education for Aspiring Careers in Healthcare), will connect students with healthcare professionals to explore opportunities in the medical field. Simulated activities will include surgical robotics, clinical lab science and ultrasound technology. We will continue to explore and advance opportunities to enlighten and help educate the next generation of health care professionals. WellSpan Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The NAACP's York County Branch released its own statement in response to the summit being cancelled: Today, we raise our voices in response to the cancellation of the 'Black Men in White Coats' program by WellSpan Health — a transformative initiative that sought to uplift, inspire, and equip youth to pursue careers in medicine. Though originally designed to address the critical underrepresentation of Black and Brown scholars in healthcare, the program's reach and impact grew far beyond its initial scope, drawing a diverse group of young participants from across our region. Let us be clear: WellSpan didn't abandon this program because it lost its value. It was forced to walk away because of a wave of new political mandates that punish institutions — schools, hospitals, nonprofits — for daring to center equity, to speak directly to marginalized communities, or to intentionally invest in those historically excluded from opportunity. These newly imposed restrictions are a modern-day silencing tactic, disguised as policies that would rather see equity erased than embraced. This program was not about special treatment — it was about removing systemic barriers and broadening access. It was about ensuring that all youth, especially those who rarely see themselves reflected in white coats and hospital corridors, could find a pathway to careers in medicine. These newly imposed restrictions are a modern-day silencing tactic, designed to erase programs that target inequity by labeling them as 'divisive.' But there is nothing divisive about justice. There is nothing radical about building bridges where walls once stood. We must not allow fear, politics, or prejudice to undo the progress that so many fought to achieve. Our youth are watching, and they deserve more than silence. They deserve investment. They deserve access. They deserve to be seen. The cancellation of this program is not the end — it is a call to action. We will not be deterred. We will continue to organize, advocate, and build the pathways our children deserve. Equity is not a trend. It is a truth. And we will never stop fighting for it. NAACP York County Branch 2294 This is a developing story.
