Expatriate pleads guilty to threatening Tillis and staff

WILMINGTON — An American citizen living in Thailand pleaded guilty Wednesday to threatening to kill U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis and his staff. Eric Charles Welton, 53, pleaded guilty to one count of threatening a federal official on account of his duties, according to a release. Welton made multiple harassing and intimidating calls to the offices of Republican elected officials and GOP organizations in the U.S. Welton said he made the threatening calls because he was angry about the large number of unsolicited political emails he received. In September 2021, Welton spoke with a staff member at the senator's Raleigh office and threatened to show up and 'put a bullet through each of [their] heads.' Welton also threatened to come to North Carolina and 'mow…down' the 'whole [expletive] state,' and find the person who emailed him and cut off his hands. 'Threatening to kill a public official and his staff is not only despicable, but also an affront to our democratic system of government,' said Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar for the Eastern District of North Carolina. 'Our office will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute threats or intimidation against public officials so they can properly carry out their important duties.' 'It is unacceptable to make violent threats against anyone. But when threats are directed at elected officials, it can impact their ability to effectively serve their constituents and their country,' said Special Agent in Charge Robert M. DeWitt of the FBI Charlotte Field Office. 'The FBI will not tolerate this type of intimidation for any reason especially when it comes to those who help run our democracy.' Welton faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced in July.

Lawmaker looks for ways to increase glass recycling in Utah

Pieces of glass are processed in a recycling facility. (Getty Images) In Utah, the lack of glass curbside recycling options means a lot of recyclable material ends up in a landfill. Rep. Douglas Welton, R-Payson, wants to break that cycle. Welton is sponsoring HB177, which would require the Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control to study how to increase glass recycling in the Beehive State. That includes an inventory of all the current glass recycling methods, identifying areas in the state that could benefit from more glass recycling, and exploring the possibility of increasing curbside recycling and glass drop off locations. The bill directs the study to be completed by September. The study would focus on multi-stream options, which is when recycled material is separated into multiple bins, opposed to single-stream recycling, where everything goes into the blue bin. Glass is 100% recyclable, meaning it can be recycled endlessly with no impact on quality. Increased glass recycling can extend the lifespan of landfills by eliminating a major source of waste, creates jobs, and can create a low-cost alternative for construction materials, like fiberglass insulation. Welton pointed to the ongoing renovation of the northern building at the Utah State Capitol, where construction crews weren't sure what to do with the nearly $4 million worth of glass that is being replaced. 'If we can keep glass out of landfills and help our circular economy, I think that's a good thing,' said Welton. Yet in Utah, curbside recycling options aren't always available — it often varies city by city, and typically comes with a monthly fee. For instance, in Salt Lake City, residents can opt into a curbside recycling program for $8 per month, made possible by Utah's only glass recycling facility, Momentum Recycling. Welton's bill passed out of the House Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee on Monday with unanimous approval. It will now go before the entire House for a vote. Charleston neighborhood bakery named among the south's best by Southern Living

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A neighborhood bakery located on downtown Charleston's famous King Street is one of the best bakeries in the south, according to an acclaimed lifestyle magazine. Welton's Tiny Bakeshop is a favorite of Southern Living editor Betsy Watson, who describes why the bakery was included on 'The Best Bakeries In The South' list. 'This teeny storefront in Charleston, South Carolina punches well above its weight with a countertop crowded with baked goods that highlight seasonal flavors and clever combinations, like the cheesy grits Danish I devoured last time I went,' Watson said. Welton's is run by Zachary and Hannah, who met while working at Husk Charleston. Following their time at Husk, the pair moved to Yucatan, where Hannah developed a Welton's favorite, the salted honey pie. Visitors to the tiny shop can order a wide variety of pastries, such as a sweet or savory Danish, seasonal hand pie, olive oil almond cake, or lemon cloud cookies. Once finished, guests can wash their pick down with coffee, tea, wine, or beer. Welton's also offers catering services. The store is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., so you can try it out. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
