Singapore Open: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy advance to second round
Singapore Badminton Open: PV Sindhu ends opening round exit jinx with emphatic win over Wen Yu Zhang
After four first round losses,
PV Sindhu
defeated Wen Yu Zhang of Canada 21-14, 21-9 to advance to the second round of the Singapore Open BWF Super-750 tournament on Tuesday.
HS Prannoy
rallied after losing the first game to beat Rasmus Gemke of Denmark 19-21, 21-16, 21-14.
Kiran George, Priyanshu Rajawat, Malvika Bansod, Anmol Kharb and Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj lost their first round matches. Malvika failed to capitalise after winning the first game against eighth seed Supanida Katethong of Thailand and lost 21-14, 18-21, 11-21. Anmol played well against world No. 5 Chen Yu Fei of China. In fact, Anmol led 17-14 and 20-18 in the second before the former Olympic champion used her experience to get past the 18-year-old.

Yu Fei will play Sindhu on Thursday. Though both the players have won six of their 12 encounters on the BWF Tour, the last time Sindhu beat Yu Fei was in the semifinals of the World Championships in 2019.
World No. 34 Prannoy was cruising at 17-11 in the first game before Gemke stunned the Indian with an unexpected comeback. Gemke made it 14-17 and from 15-18 he moved to 20-18 in the first. However, Prannoy dominated the Dane in the next two games. He will next face Christo Popov of France, who knocked out third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark 21-17, 21-13.
