The Legend of Zelda Movie Allegedly Eyeing Hunter Schaferor as Princess Zelda

It's been pitched before, but it looks like the studios could be taking it seriously this time. According to a rumor from @DanielRPK (via @screentime), Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is being eyed to play the role of Princess Zelda in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie directed by Wes Ball. So far, not other cast members have been rumored, but Schafer has been fancast for a while, seeing that she does fit the look of Princess Zelda very well, and it would be a huge move to have a central character in a major franchise played by a trans woman. Admittedly, Schafer has been public about not getting boxed into trans roles, and getting cast as Zelda may be the perfect part for her. We know she already looks the part, but we've yet to really watch her play someone like Zelda who is expected to exude poise and grace—then again, that depends on which kind of Zelda they're adapting. As expected, there are already a lot of transphobic comments coming out about Schafer landing the part, and hopefully Sony and Nintendo will be ready to protect Schafer should they move forward with the casting. As someone whose been a big fan of Schafer since Euphoria , I'm really up for the casting; and I hope she manages to land this role as well as the part of the next Mystique when Marvel Studios is ready to reboot X-Men . The Legend of Zelda movie is expected to hit theaters on March 26, 2027.

‘Minecraft' was a hit. Here are 7 other video game adaptations to get excited about

Editor's Note: A version of this story was published in October 2023. Much like 2023's 'Super Mario Bros. Movie,' this month's 'A Minecraft Movie' seemingly came out of nowhere to score box office gold. But no one should have been surprised: video game adaptations are an increasingly vital part of the entertainment market, which some say is set to replace superheroes as 'Hollywood's dominant intellectual property.' Not all adaptations of popular games are guaranteed success – see last year's 'Borderlands,' in addition to 2022's 'Uncharted' and 2018's 'Tomb Raider' reboot. Critics and fans alike found those movies faltering in their ability to capture the story and magic of the gameplay in their respective source material. But the ones that work, predictably, are set to spawn sequels and new seasons of TV, with new installments set for 'Mario,' 'Mortal Kombat,' 'Sonic the Hedgehog,' 'The Angry Birds' and many more. (Bonus: The highly anticipated Season 2 of 'The Last of Us' premieres this weekend.) What else is coming down the pike by way of video game adaptations? Here are several more upcoming movies and television shows based on video games, in no particular order: (Note: CNN and Warner Bros. Pictures, which produced 'Minecraft,' are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.) 'The Legend of Zelda' (2027) The announcement that this storied game franchise – casually referred to as 'Zelda' in shorthand – would be coming to theaters in 2027 as a live action film almost broke the internet last month. And for good reason: Zelda games are right up there with Super Mario Bros. in terms of seminal video game source material. The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, who helmed the 'Maze Runner' film franchise. 'Until Dawn' (April 25) As seen with many titles below like 'Five Nights at Freddy's' and 'Silent Hill,' the overlap between video games and horror content is wide and rich, like in this terrifying game-turned-fright flick out later this month. Featuring Odessa A'zion of 2022's 'Hellraiser' reboot, 'Until Dawn' follows a group of people caught in a time loop who must survive until daybreak to get out alive. It's part 'Groundhog Day,' part 'Cabin in the Woods,' with a little 'Thir13en Ghosts' thrown in. 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' (December 5) 'Five Nights at Freddy's' from 2023 successfully cashed in on the popularity of the beloved survival video game that inspired it, giving way to this creepy animatronic horror sequel. The new installment will welcome back Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio and 'Scream' alum Matthew Lillard, with Mckenna Grace and Wayne Knight (of 'Jurassic Park' and 'Seinfeld' fame) coming on board as newcomers. 'Return to Silent Hill' (TBA) The survival horror puzzle game franchise will return to theaters with 'Return to Silent Hill.' Christophe Gans, helmer of the Radha Mitchell-starring 'Silent Hill' from 2006, is back to direct the sequel, inspired by the 2001 game 'Silent Hill 2.' The movie will follow James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) as he is drawn back to the creepy titular town by a letter seemingly from a past love. 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu' sequel (TBA) Though not the character's first foray outside of video games, Pikachu will reportedly grace screens again in a sequel to the live-action 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu' film from 2019 that featured the voice of Ryan Reynolds. A second movie was announced shortly before the first debuted at the box office, however, whether or not the original star-studded cast will return remains unclear. 'God of War Ragnarok' (TBA) Amazon Studios plans on making the widely-acclaimed fantasy, third-person story game 'God of War Ragnarok' into a television series. The show is expected to closely mirror the 2022 game, in which Kratos the Greek God of War and his son Atreus journey against the backdrop of Norse mythology to honor Kratos' fallen wife. 'Stray' (TBA) What could be better than wandering around a vaguely dystopian, cyberpunk city as a friendly feline trying to piece together clues as you find your way home? Yes – this does sound a bit like this year's Oscar-winner for best animated feature, 'Flow.' Annapurna Pictures, whose video game division developed the popular 2022 game 'Stray,' is currently developing an animated feature based off the beloved title.

Live-Action ‘Zelda' Movie Set for 2027 Release From Sony, Nintendo

Sony and Nintendo's live-action 'The Legend of Zelda' movie now has a release date – the quest will begin on March 26, 2027. Wes Ball, who recently helmed 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,' will direct the feature, with original videogame creator Shigeru Miyamoto producing alongside Avi Arad. 'The Legend of Zelda' debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan on Feb. 21, 1986, and in North America on August 22, 1987. It followed the intrepid hero Link, who is on a quest to save the princess Zelda. The game and many of the subsequent games were set in the magical realm of Hyrule. Much of that game, like the Triforce and dungeon-crawling, have become staples of the franchise. The most recent game, 'The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,' came out on the Nintendo Switch last fall and allowed you to play as Zelda for the first time. Elsewhere, Nintendo and Illumination's animated 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' was released in 2023 and made more than $1.3 billion at the global box office. A sequel is in development and will be released by Universal in 2026 with returning voice actors Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black. There are a number of other live-action video game adaptations opening this year, with 'A Minecraft Movie' and 'Until Dawn' (from Sony) opening in April, along with sequels to 'Five Nights at Freddy's' (from Universal) and 'Mortal Kombat' (from New Line Cinema) opening later in 2025. Video games are also on a hot streak on the small screen, with the second season of HBO's 'The Last of Us' coming soon and additional seasons of 'Fallout,' 'Gangs of London' and 'Twisted Metal' on the way. Nintendo's Risky ‘The Legend Of Zelda' Movie Gets A Release Date

BOTW 2 It was easy to forget this even existed, but the Legend of Zelda live-action movie from Sony and Nintendo is still happening, and now it has a release date. That would be March 26, 2027, almost exactly two years from now, and four years after it was announced in 2023. The first confirmation of this seemed to be through the new Nintendo news app, of all places, sometime Nintendo wants everyone to download. The Zelda movie may be a somewhat exciting prospect, but it also feels like a pretty big risk for a few reasons. Namely, that it's live-action, something that was not the case with the billion dollar-grossing Super Mario Bros. movie which was able to channel the look and feel of the games exactly. Doing that in live-action for a Zelda movie will likely be much more difficult, though perhaps not impossible. The director of the movie seems like at least something of a question mark. That would be Wes Ball, director of the somewhat-okay YA Maze Runner trilogy, but more recently, the well-received Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. But those are the only movies under his belt in the last 11 years, and this is a huge, high profile project with an IP beloved by millions of fans over the course of quite literally 40 years. DENVER, CO - JULY 1: Zelda and Link aka Morgan Danielle and Sam Britz pose for a portrait during ... More Denver Comic Con at the Colorado Convention Center on July 1, 2017, in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Seth McConnell/The Denver Post via Getty Images) The film also has producer Avi Arad on board, who is best-known for producing a long list of superhero productions, from nearly all Sony's older Spider-Man movies and some X-Men movies. However, most recently, he's presided over the very bad, now-dead Sony Spider-Man villain universe which includes three Venom movies, Morbius and Kraven the Hunter, the last of which is one of the worst-grossing superhero movies in the entire modern era. Also, his last foray into a video game adaptation was the outrageously bad Borderlands movie. I'm just not sure this sounds like a dream team at this point, plus the base concept of a live-action Zelda movie is treading a knife's edge, and feels like far less of a slam dunk than a CGI Mario movie. CGI would have probably worked here, or probably even better, an anime series, but here we are. The movie will be out in two years, minus any delays, but I would not expect to see much promotion for it until some time in 2026. At least we have a date now, which is more progress than we've heard in several years. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
