'Legend of Zelda' live-action movie finds its Zelda and Link
The live-action 'Legend of Zelda' movie has found its stars. Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who's an executive producer on the film, announced Wednesday on X that Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link in Nintendo and Sony's film. Miyamoto created the hit video game series with Takashi Tezuka. British actor Bo Bragason is known for her roles in BBC One's 'Three Girls' and 'The Jetty,' as well as Disney+'s 'Renegade Nell' and the 2024 vampire comedy 'The Radleys.' Ainsworth, also from the U.K., voiced Pinocchio in Disney+'s live-action 'Pinocchio' in 2022 and played Miles in Netflix's 'The Haunting of Bly Manor.' He also stars in the Canadian series 'Son of a Critch' and the comedy 'Everything's Going to Be Great.' Read more: Mario's 'dad' Shigeru Miyamoto on 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' and watching his creation grow beyond him The actors' young ages — 21 and 16 — have sparked fan speculation that the film may draw from 'The Wind Waker' or 'Ocarina of Time' games, which feature Zelda and Link as teens. While initially slated for a March 2027 release, production delays have shifted the film's launch to May 7, 2027. The project is helmed by director Wes Ball, known for the 'Maze Runner' trilogy and 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.' A huge fan of the franchise, Ball told Entertainment Weekly in late 2023 that he wanted to create something more akin to 'a live-action Miyazaki' than 'The Lord of the Rings.' 'That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that,' he told EW about the renowned Japanese animator. Avi Arad is also producing the film. The adaptation marks Nintendo's second big-screen foray after 2023's mega-successful 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie.' The animated film grossed about $1.4 billion worldwide. The action-adventure video game franchise, released in 1986, follows young hero Link on his quests to rescue Princess Zelda and overcome the villain Ganon. Missions include navigating dungeons, solving puzzles and taking on an array of enemies. Celebrated for its innovative gameplay, installments of the popular game include 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' and 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.' In the years since, the franchise has expanded beyond video games and into other media like animated series and comic books, and now film. Nintendo Delays Live-Action 'The Legend of Zelda' Movie To May 2027
The kingdom of Hyrule will take a while more to take shape on the silver screen, as Nintendo has postponed the release of its upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie. Initially slated for theatrical debut on 26 March 2027, it's now arriving two months later on 7 May 2027, occupying the date previously held by Avengers: Secret Wars . In a statement by industry veteran Shigeru Miyamoto, the franchise creator shared that 'extra time' is needed to improve the film's quality. 'This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to 7 May 2027,' it reads. 'It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.' No further elaboration was given, but the delay puts it out of the way of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova , which are slated for release on 19 and 26 March 2027, respectively. Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars has been pushed back to 17 December in the same year. Image credit: Karwai Tang / Getty Images. The Legend of Zelda live-action adaptation was first announced in November 2023, following the breakout success of the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie . Then, Miyamoto confirmed that it had been in the works 'for many years now', though updates have been sparse since. Wes Ball ( Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ) is directing the project, with Avi Arad, whose credits include every live-action Spider-Man movie and the Spider-Verse animated features, serving as producer alongside Miyamoto. Other details, including story specifics and casting, are still under lock and key. While Euphoria star Hunter Schafer remains the top fan-cast option for Zelda, there's no official confirmation of her involvement in the pic. Introduced in 1986, the iconic series follows elf-like warrior Link as he fights alongside Zelda, the princess of Hyrule, to protect their land from dark forces led by big bad Ganon. It has 21 entries and a number of spin-offs to date, and is largely considered to be one of the most successful franchises in gaming history. The two most recent mainline titles, Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are getting enhanced versions on the recently launched Nintendo Switch 2, now available for pre-orders in Singapore at S$719 (check out our handy guide for price comparison across all regions). The upcoming Legend of Zelda movie is set to bow on 7 May 2027. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Movie Release Delayed, but Creator Shigeru Miyamoto Says It's Worth the Wait — GeekTyrant
The release of the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda live-action movie just got pushed back, but it's not by much. Originally slated for March 26, 2027, the new release date is now May 7, 2027. That's a minor delay, and according to Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, there's a very good reason behind it. He shared on X: 'This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. 'It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.' Look, fans have already waited a long time for this movie to happen, so a few more months isn't going to hurt. Also, they can take all the time they need to make sure this movie lands the way it should. If you've been following this project since it was first announced in 2023, you know there's a lot riding on it. After the Super Mario Bros. Movie exploded at the box office, Nintendo quickly realized the potential for adapting its other flagship franchises. Zelda was the obvious next move. Wes Ball ( Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ) is directing, and he's already made it clear he's approaching this with reverence: 'I will go to the ends of the earth to make sure that it is the movie we all hope it will be.' He even described his vision for the film as feeling like a 'live-action Miyazaki' experience, which is a pretty bold and exciting creative north star. He also said: 'I know it's important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape. That's the thing I want to try to create – it's got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical." 'This awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn't like Lord of the Rings, it's its own thing. I've always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that." "It's going to be awesome. My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that's untapped IP, if you will. Nintendo and Sony Pictures are co-producing the movie, with Derek Connolly ( Jurassic World ) writing the screenplay. The Legend of Zelda follows the adventures of a young hero named Link, who is often tasked with rescuing Princess Zelda and battling the malevolent villain Ganon.
