Dylan's Journey: Rock Falls' seniors to host fundraiser for classmate at Culver's of Rock Falls

Apr. 22—ROCK FALLS — Rock Falls High School's senior class is inviting area residents to join them at Culver's of Rock Falls to support fellow classmate Dylan Wescott's healing journey. Culver's of Rock Falls will host a share night from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, when a percentage of sales and all cash donations will be donated by the Rock Falls senior class to Wescott and his family as he recovers from a sports accident. "The senior class officers at RFHS decided we all wanted to do something to help a fellow classmate and his family during this difficult and life-changing time for them," said Rock Falls High School Senior Class Vice President Addy Watts. "Being class vice president and also working at Rock Falls Culver's, I was able to find a way where the entire community can get a great meal and donate to a good cause." Other ways the community can support Wescott is by joining his Facebook group called Dylan's Journey. Through the Facebook group, friends and family can stay up to date on his journey, donate and participate in raffles and other events. People can also donate through his GoFundMe page at Fundraiser by Kim Kilday: Dylan's Journey at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago. "This truly was a team effort trying to plan the share night for Dylan and his family. I'm grateful for the fellow class officers and our adviser, Mindy Teske, for helping finalize a few things and are willing to work it," Watts said. "I hope the entire community can find a time during that night to swing by and make a donation to the family!" Wescott suffered a broken neck in a track meet accident that left him partially paralyzed March 15. The injury happened when he was doing his practice run-throughs in the triple jump, competing at his first meet of the season at the Westwood Sports Complex, an indoor facility in Sterling. During the run-through, Wescott tumbled forward headfirst into a padded brick wall. He was just coming off basketball season with the Rockets, who finished their state run to the Elite Eight five days before the track and field meet. He also plays golf and has been a three-sport athlete throughout high school. Dylan is the son of Brian and Nicol Wescott and has a sister, Madison. Brian works at the Candlelight Group and Nicol is a teacher at Southside Elementary School in Morrison. Madison is a senior at Northern Illinois University and will graduate in May.

Illinois HS athlete suffers horrific injury while warming up for triple jump

An Illinois high school track athlete suffered an unimaginable injury while warming up for the triple jump at a meet last month. Dylan Westcott, of Rock Falls High School, broke his neck in a freak accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The 18-year-old has been rehabbing at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and has been able to sit in a wheelchair since about a week after the March 15 catastrophe. Rock Falls High School head track coach Eric Bontz shared the horrific details in an interview with KWQC-TV. "He was warming up in the triple jump, just doing run throughs, and as he was going through the sand, he tripped either over his own feet or over the sand, and kind of stumbled, and was kind of running as he was stumbling, and just fell head first into the wall," Bontz said. Wescott went through 12 hours of surgery immediately after the accident, according to the Daily Gazette. He had two cages inserted to stabilize his neck with a vertebra was replaced with a titanium plate. "You go from being a normal, happy family with, everybody talking about future plans and graduation, prom -- he just got accepted to study to be a vet tech after high school -- and then seeing him in a wheelchair, not able to do a lot of the things that he used to do," Westcott's aunt, Kim Wescott Kilday, told the station. "It really hurts." Wescott's family and coach have praised his resiliency. A GoFundMe has raised more than $22,000 to help with medical expenses. Sandy Springs works to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists

Monday was the last day people could add their input to the city of Sandy Springs's Safety Action Plan. City leaders have been working on the plan since February 2024, holding community input meetings along with having an online input portal. The city got a federal grant from the Department of Transportation. Through the study, leaders found there had been 27,502 crashes in the city limits over the past five years. While nearly half of them happened on either Interstate 285 or GA 400, a third occurred on city streets. 'To see if we could really make a difference in minimizing fresh dangers whether you're walking or biking, taking transit, or in your own vehicle,' Sandy Springs Traffic and Transportation Manager Kristen Wescott told Channel 2′s Eryn Rogers. Wescott said they narrowed in on problem areas and were able to see where a lot of the crashes were happening. 'State route 400 at Northridge, I-285 at Roswell Road, Abernathy at Roswell Road,' Wescott said. Resident Vladimir Shklovsky said he sees problems on Roswell Road. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'Even where there are sidewalks, it's broken old concrete, with no curb protection, no separation between the road and where people are walking,' Shklovsky said. Wescott said the plan includes adding sidewalks on Roswell Road from I-285 to the Atlanta city limits. However, she said the plan looks at more than just engineering projects. 'Teen driving patterns, or distracted driving, also working with our police and fire related to emergency response and crash protocol,' Wescott said. Wescott said they're also looking into adding more mid-block crossings in areas where the lights are far apart on Roswell Road and other areas in the city to hopefully cut down on jaywalking. 'I see people crossing the street, and I get it, it's hard to walk up and down the hill to get to a crosswalk far away, and they're just playing frogger with cars,' Shklovsky said. 'It's terrifying.' City leaders said they also need people to do their part in reducing crashes. 'I hope people take a moment to think about their own driving behavior because a lot of our behavior leads to crashes, so whether that's speeding, reckless driving, whether it's distracted driving, put that phone away,' Wescott said. There will be a chance for public comment at the City Council meeting Tuesday. City leaders will present the Safety Action Plan for council members to adopt. The meeting starts at 6 pm. Max and Mason: Mothers of stabbed teens say killer 'gloated' in rap

The mothers of two teenage boys who were stabbed to death has said one of the murderers should be handed more jail time after "gloating" in a rap on social Rist, 15, and Max Dixon, 16, were ambushed in a case of mistaken identity outside Mason's home in Knowle West, Bristol, on 27 January emerged earlier this year that Kodi Wescott, 17, who was found guilty of murder in November, had been sharing offensive rap tracks about the crime on Snapchat while in jail."This proves to me that there's no remorse whatsoever," said Max's mother, Leanne Ekland. She added: "[Friday 21 March] is a year ago from when I had to bury my son, instead of being able to focus on that, I can't." Wescott was found guilty for both murders, alongside Antony Snook, 45, Riley Tolliver, 18, and two boys aged 16 and 15 who cannot be named due to their ages, with all five handed life was told he would have to serve a minimum of 23 years. The "disrespectful" rap lyrics made reference to 33 seconds – the length of time it took to ambush and kill the Ekland, whose position is strongly supported by Mason's mother Nikki Knight, said: "He's gloating about murdering two boys that had nothing to do with them, over a postcode war."The murder trial was told there had been a long-standing rivalry between Knowle West and neighbouring Hartcliffe, and there had previously been incidents involving people from "both postcodes". The violent video Wescott made has now been removed from social media – but Max and Mason's families have said that is not enough."For him to brag about what he did – I personally think he should be resentenced and given more time," Ms Ekland Thursday, judge and former Justice Secretary Sir Robert Buckland told the BBC Wescott's possession of a mobile phone – considered a contraband item in a youth detention centre – "might give rise to an alleged criminal offence"."Therefore it should be investigated, I think, as a separate criminal offence, for which this person could potentially be prosecuted," he said."That would then lead to a separate sentence that would be added to the sentence of life imprisonment." Ms Ekland added: "[Wescott] should be held accountable. He should never be allowed to come out of prison."I am Max's voice and I'm not going to disappear and hide away."She added: "If you're caught with something you're not allowed to have, then you should automatically have time added onto your sentence."The Ministry of Justice previously said it disabled a number of accounts relating to the allegations of social media council that runs the secure children's home where Wescott is held also conducted searches to remove any illicit mobile devices.A meeting has been arranged with the mothers of Max Dixon and Mason Rist, Minister for Youth Justice, Sir Nic Dakin and leaders in the Youth Custody Service to discuss the case in more detail on 6 May.
