When Manchester City must return Premier League trophy as Liverpool prepares to celebrate
Manchester City's lengthy stint as Premier League champion is likely to come to an end this weekend as Liverpool closes in on the title. The Reds only need to avoid defeat against Tottenham on Sunday to ensure the title returns to Merseyside, and considering Spurs' recent form, it would be a major surprise were they to record a first victory at Anfield since 2011. Tottenham goes into the game off the back of one win in its last seven league games, and amid speculation that Ange Postecoglou will be sacked at the end of the season — even if the North London club ends the campaign with Europa League glory. Brazilian wonderkid could be Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement READ MORE: Liverpool title parade details and likely route as Reds inch closer to Premier League With that in mind, Liverpool fans around the world are fully anticipating that the title will be wrapped up this weekend ahead of the trophy lift, which will take place following the Reds' final home game of the season at home to Crystal Palace on May 25. At the moment, the Premier League trophy remains with defending champion City, but league rules stipulate that City must return the trophy to the league three weeks before the end of the season. There are in fact two Premier League trophies: one which the defending champion keeps hold of during the season after it wins the league, and another which is used by the Premier League. The Premier League website states: "There are two trophies which are identical and include an engraved base detailing past Premier League champions. During the season, one stays with the Premier League champions, while the other is used by the league. The champions must return their trophy to the Premier League at least three weeks before their final league match of the season." Regarding the Premier League medals that are handed out at the end of the season, the Reds are set to receive 40, which they can do with as they see fit — as long as all players with five appearances or more receive one. The Premier League website explains: "The champions are given 40 commemorative medals made of silver, which are 2.25 inches (5.7 centimeters) in diameter. "They can be distributed to the manager, players and officials, as the club sees fit, as long as every player who has made at least five Premier League appearances during the title-winning season gets one. "Additional medals may only be presented with the consent of the Premier League Board, and that will only be granted if more than 39 players have made at least five PL appearances during the campaign." Twenty-one Liverpool players currently meet the five-appearance criteria to be guaranteed a medal, while Federico Chiesa is on four appearances. The only other two players to have appeared in the Premier League for Liverpool this season are third-choice goalie Vitezslav Jaros and young striker Jayden Danns, both of whom have made one appearance.

Report: Barcelona reignite interest in 21-year-old Brazilian talent
Barcelona are closely monitoring the progress of Wesley Franca, a 21-year-old right-back who currently plays for Flamengo in Brazil. According to a recent report from SPORT, the Catalan club has been keeping tabs on the young defender for some time and considers him a potential option to strengthen the right-back position. Interestingly, this is not the first time Barcelona have shown interest in Wesley. Back in 2023, the club explored the possibility of signing him on loan with an option to buy. However, Flamengo decided to increase his valuation, making the deal difficult to complete. As a result, Barcelona shifted their focus elsewhere and ultimately brought in Julian Araujo. Despite that setback, Barcelona have continued to monitor Wesley's progress closely. Now in his third season as a starter for Flamengo, the young right-back has significantly improved his game. His development has been particularly impressive since former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis took charge of Flamengo. Under his guidance, Wesley has taken his game to the next level, earning widespread recognition. Barcelona are currently assessing multiple options for the right-back position, as they aim to strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window. However, any potential move depends on how well the club manages its 'exit operation'—offloading players to create financial flexibility for new signings. One of the biggest challenges for Barcelona is Wesley's rising market value. At 21 years old, he is no longer an under-the-radar talent. Flamengo, who hold 90% of his economic rights, are ready to sell him in the next transfer window and the club has placed a hefty €35 million price tag on him, viewing his potential sale as one of their top financial priorities. Flamengo's board aims to position Wesley among the club's highest transfer sales, alongside Vinicius Jr and Lucas Paqueta. Several Premier League clubs have already shown willingness to meet Flamengo's demands, making competition for the defender fierce. For Barcelona, the situation requires careful evaluation. While Wesley remains an intriguing option, the club may also explore alternative right-backs in the European market who could offer similar qualities at a more reasonable price.

Manchester United look to sign Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca
Manchester United are allegedly working on signing Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca this summer. With the winter transfer window closing just two days ago, Man United fans could be justified for feeling disappointed following what was an underwhelming volume of deals at what has been a precarious time at Old Trafford. While United manager Ruben Amorim succeeded in signing Patrick Dorgu form Lecce, thereby adding a much-needed reinforcement at left-back, the lack of further signings in January was concerning. After all, fellow signing Ayden Heaven is 18 years old, meaning he may only be eased into the first-team gradually over the medium term. Despite the quiet winter transfer period, it appears that United may be playing the long game, targeting further signings this summer. Fichajes reported this morning that United are looking to sign Wesley during the next transfer window. 'Manchester United have decided to enter the race for Wesley and have made him a priority target for the next transfer window,' the report read. 'The need to strengthen their defence amid an impending restructuring has led the English club to set their sights on the young Flamengo right-back,' the article acknowledged. 'However, it will not be an easy operation, as Zenit of Russia have already put forward an offer of 30 million euros, which makes it clear that the competition for the Brazilian will be intense. The Mengão board already assumes that retaining the player will be an almost impossible task.' Given that Wesley's Flamengo contract runs through 2028, United will need to submit a competitive offer in order to lure him away from Brazil, particularly if they hope to beat Zenit to his signature. Although Amorim will need to rely on the squad he has got for the remainder of the season, the United manager may yet receive the financial backing he needs from Ineos in order to rejuvenate his team with some much-needed fresh signings. Still, it may take some convincing for Ineos to release transfer funds, given the strict cost-cutting measures that they have implemented at the club in recent times. Follow us on Bluesky: @
