Gov. Reynolds issues disaster proclamation for counties affected by hail, tornado

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCAU) — Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for four Iowa counties in response to severe weather that hit the state on Thursday, April 17. According to a release, the proclamation is now in effect for Buena Vista, Fremont, Page and Plymouth counties. It will expire on May 18, 2025. Among the communities most affected was Storm Lake, where storms led to a citywide power outage and large hail caused significant property damage. A tornado also went through Page County in southwest Iowa, damaging houses and barns. By issuing the proclamation, state resources are available to help recover from the storms, and the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and Disaster Case Advocacy Program were activated. Storm Lake officials warn of post-disaster scams as community cleans up from storm damage Through the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program, households with incomes up to 200% of the federal poverty level can request grants for up to $7,000. The grants can be used for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses related to storm recovery. The original receipts are required. Those interested have up to 45 days to submit a claim and apply. Instructions and the grant application can be found on the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management website. The Disaster Case Advocacy Program also helps those impacted by disasters. The program provides advocates to help create a disaster recovery plan and provide guidance, advice, and referrals to obtain a service or resource. There are no income eligibility requirements for this program. The program closes 180 days from the date of the proclamation. For more information about the program, .
