West Asian Laser-Run Cup kicks off in Kuwait with 66 athletes

KUWAIT, April 30, (KUNA): The West Asian Laser-Run Cup will begin Thursday, May 1, under the patronage of Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, Minister of Information and Culture and State Minister for Youth Affairs. This one-day tournament will be hosted at Al-Nasr Sports Club's Sheikh Ali Sabah Al-Salem Stadium in Kuwait. In a statement to KUNA, Nasser Al-Waleed, President of the Kuwait Modern Pentathlon Federation (KMPF) and Vice President of the West Asian Modern Pentathlon Confederation (WAMPC), highlighted that the Laser-Run event, which combines running and laser shooting, is a major component of modern pentathlon. Al-Waleed shared that the upcoming West Asian Laser-Run Cup will feature 66 male and female athletes from seven WAMPC member nations, marking the first-ever tournament of the confederation, which was established in December 2024 in Kuwait. The confederation, he added, aims to support the ambitions of West Asian countries in reaching international platforms. The closing ceremony of the tournament will take place at the Movenpick Hotel in the Free Zone, with WAMPC's Board of Directors, participating delegations, sponsors, and KMPF members in attendance. Al-Waleed expressed gratitude to the Information Minister for his generous sponsorship, to the Public Authority for Sport's Chief for facilitating all hosting procedures, and to the President and members of the Kuwait Olympic Committee for their ongoing support of the Kuwaiti modern pentathlon team. It is important to note that Laser-Run is the fifth and final discipline of modern pentathlon, following fencing, swimming, steeplechase, and combined running and laser shooting. In Laser-Run, athletes use laser guns to target electronic sensors, hitting five accurate shots to allow them to complete a designated running course, which varies in distance for different age groups.
