West Cumbrian coastguard teams assist injured walker
COASTGUARD teams were called out to assist an injured person on the West Cumbrian coast. Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard teams came to the assistance of an injured walker. The incident took place on Sunday, May 25, at Fleswick Bay near St Bees. In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard wrote: "We were tasked this afternoon by our Coordination Centre Belfast Coastguard, after a 999 call was received reporting a fallen walker with a leg injury, in the area of Fleswick Bay. "The original 999 call had accidentally been directed to Cumbria Police rather than asking for the coastguard. "The Wasdale Mountain Rescue team was also tasked by the police to assist. "Given the coastal location, the MRT team leader contacted HM Coastguard to define what rendezvous point was to be used. "A quick chat between both organisations identified that there was sufficient Coastguard Rescue Team personnel to resolve the incident. "The Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team had been tasked and within 20 minutes of receiving the 999 call were on scene at Fleswick Bay with the casualty. "One of our casualty carers and a team paramedic set about conducting initial medical assessments and treatment. The casualty was then extracted and was on their way to the hospital. "When accessing this location, we always need to access as quickly and as safely as possible, whilst being sure not to upset the grazing livestock. "As always, our thanks go to the local farmers who work with us to ensure we have a predetermined safe route of access that doesn't impact their livelihood and ensures we have swift access to any casualty."

What's next for Maryport bare-knuckle boxer after latest fight
West Cumbrian bare-knuckle boxer Bartek Kanabey has the 'heart of a lion' and will learn from his BKFC defeat. That's according to the Maryport fighter's coach following Kanabey's brave defeat to Lewis Garside in Newcastle. Kanabey went the distance with his Sunderland-based opponent despite being knocked down twice, but lost on a unanimous points decision. It was a fourth BKFC fight for the man nicknamed 'The Polish Plough', who can expect three further fights after recently signing a new deal with the major bare-knuckle platform. Coach Dave Straughton, who trains Kanabey at the Just Grind gym in Workington, said: 'He's got the heart of a lion – he's as tough as they come. 'We'd prefer if he didn't always have to show that. I'd like him to have a couple of nice, easy nights, really. But we're fighting at the highest level. 'We're disappointed, but there are lots of things to work on and you have to keep your chin up.' Kanabey put in a durable performance at the BKFC Fight Night Newcastle event but was unable to get the better of the skilful Garside. 'It's said that punches change fights, just like goals change games of football,' added Straughton. 'I think when Bartek got dropped the first time, from then on it was in his head – it's only a five-round fight, so I think it's in his head that it's a bit of a mountain to climb. 'He'd only had three fights in his entire BKFC career, so he's not got loads and loads of experience to call on. Sunderland's Garside defeated Maryport's Kanabey in a unanimous judges' decision (Image: BKFC) 'But his opponent was very good as well – he's from the same gym as Mick Terrill, the heavyweight champion, and he was a bit heavier as well. 'We'll sit down, watch the fight back and take it from there. We haven't talked loads about it yet, so I think it's better if he comes out of it for a few days, let the emotions calm down, and then look at it all afresh.' Kanabey, after the fight, spoke of his love for bare-knuckle and his passion for further fights, with more action expected later this year. The boxer walked to the ring draped in a half-Cumbrian, half-Polish flag. Straughton added: 'We're waiting for the dust to settle at the moment. We'll probably hear something next month or so. 'Physically he's in good shape. He hasn't come out of it with anything in the way of serious injuries, so he's good to go.'

Maryport bare-knuckle boxer suffers brave defeat in big BKFC fight
West Cumbrian bare-knuckle boxer Bartek Kanabey went down to a brave defeat in his latest BKFC fight. The Maryport-based fighter went up against Lewis Garside in a featherweight contest in Newcastle. Kanabey went the distance with his opponent from Sunderland despite being knocked down twice. But Garside had the upper hand and won by a unanimous points decision after the five-round fight at the BKFC Fight Night Newcastle event. Polish-born Kanabey, 26, went into his fourth fight on the major BKFC platform after two wins and a defeat from his first three outings. He had the height and reach advantage over his north-east opponent, who was making his BKFC debut after a background in MMA (mixed martial arts). But Garside exerted control in a fight, held at Newcastle's Walker Activity Dome, which saw both men patiently looking for opportunities. The first round saw a cagey start as Kanabey - nicknamed 'the Polish Plough' - withstood some strong hooks from Garside, who was also quick to evade the west Cumbrian's jab. A powerful right-hand shot from Garside caused some swelling under Kanabey's right eye - and then in the second round a powerful left hook sent the Maryport boxer to the canvas. Kanabey, though, was soon back to his feet and ended the round with some quick shots that almost unsettled his opponent. In the third round the duo exchanged some hard body shots before another big left hand from Garside knocked Kanabey down again. Kanabey, left, now has two wins and two defeats from his four BKFC fights (Image: BKFC) He came through the mandatory eight count and battled on and, after Kanabey survived further attack in a cagey fourth round, the west Cumbrian tried to force the issue in the fifth. But a more aggressive approach from Kanabey failed to see the decisive blow as Garside showed his skill to evade his punches, the Sunderland fighter coming through a late exchange of punches to the bell. The judges' all concluded that Garside was the winner with a unanimous points decision and a margin of 50-43, the Sunderland fighter nicknamed 'the Leprechaun' celebrating as his arm was raised. Kanabey, who trains at Just Grind in Workington, will now regroup for his next BKFC outing having recently signed a four-fight deal on the platform. He had recorded victories over Shaun Kissane and Bakhtyor Kudratov before defeats to Jack Culshaw and Garside. He earned his chance on the BKFC stage after successful outings in the west Cumbrian WBKB events.
