'Sabah for Sabahans' a call for justice, not division
Published on: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 13, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong has defended the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment, calling it a demand for fairness and justice, not a divisive agenda, as claimed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Responding to Zahid's remarks, Ong said Sabah has long been marginalized since joining Malaysia, with its resources exploited and decisions made without Sabahans' input. He stressed that 'Sabah for Sabahans' is about reclaiming rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963, ensuring local governance, and correcting historical injustices, not rejecting national unity. He also criticized the double standards in West Malaysian politics, where race and religion based rhetoric goes unchecked, while Sabahans seeking autonomy are labelled divisive. 'Sabahans of all backgrounds live in harmony. We're asking to manage our own affairs, not break from Malaysia. 'Standing up for Sabah is responsible. What's truly divisive is ignoring our voices,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rare 7.2kg 'ikan ketutu' caught in Rejang River, stuns Kapit market crowds
Lawrence shows the 'ikan ketutu' that he purchased by a fisherman. KAPIT (May 11): A lucky fisherman landed a massive 7.2-kilogramme (kg) 'ikan ketutu' (marble goby) using a line and hook in the Rejang River near Kapit this morning. The fisherman then took the live fish to Terasang Market, where it earned him a small fortune. Fishmonger Lawrence Bangit purchased the impressive catch and offered it for sale at RM75 per kg. The unusually large 'ikan ketutu', also know as 'ikan haruan bodoh' in Bahasa Melayu, drew a crowd of curious onlookers who quickly gathered at the market. Rudy Havit, in his forties and among the onlookers, explained that the 'ikan ketutu', was once a common river species in the area. However, due to overfishing, the fish has become very rare, almost extinct. He noted that catching Ikan Ketutut is now a difficult feat. 'Previously, ikan ketutu was common in the tributaries of the Rejang River (such as Sungai Katibas, Sungai Muhjong, Sungai Ga'at, Sungai Pelagus, Sungai Metah, and Sungai Pila). They typically weighed between one and two kg. This one, weighing 7.2kg and measuring almost three feet, is extraordinarily large. 'It used to be inexpensive, only RM20 to RM30 per kg. Now, it's expensive due to high demand and scarcity,' Rudy elaborated. He noted that 'ikan ketutu' is very popular in Peninsular Malaysia, with prices ranging between RM150 and RM200 per kg depending on the size. 'It's a favourite among West Malaysian diners because the flesh is tender and sweet, and importantly, it has very few bones – only the backbone – unlike other river fish like 'ikan tengadak', 'ikan semah', or 'ikan padi', which have many small bones.' The common way to prepare 'ikan ketutu' is deep-fried with sweet and sour sauce. ikan ketutu Kapit lead rejang reiver

15 years later, Sabah house buyers are still the victims
Published on: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 Text Size: The news item from the Daily Express of August 2009, refers. More than 15 years have passed. Has the situation improved? Do house or property buyers get their title within months of moving in like in Singapore? Answer is NO. Maybe it will still be the same few years from now, or even 10 years from now. Ministers come and ministers go. Even the State Government has changed 2-3 times since 2009. The situation is still the same. The house buyers are still the sufferers or victims. The present Housing Minister is a former Assistant Housing Minister. Therefore he should know the problem and deal with it quickly from the day he became Minister. Even the officer in charge of housing when he was Assistant Minister also transferred or retired already. Even New who said this 15 years ago also retired already. Even one of the speakers, lawyer Lam also migrated to Canda already. Nothing has changed. Meanwhile the officers concerned are enjoying fat salaries and maybe receiving 'courtesy calls' from developers every now and then. Still no Strata Titles. One such project is the Cyber City Apartments where owners have lived for more than 10 years. A few have died or sold their properties out of frustration. The Strata Title remains a dream. It seems that even the officers in the Ministry cannot 'touch' the developer. Powerful ah? Of course the developers will give all kinds of excuses when questioned. As stated by one of the speakers the Management Corporation (MC) cannot be used as an excuse It's a separate matter. Election is coming soon. I wonder if after election and there is a new Housing Minister, will the situation improve? I certainly hope so but it's only a hope. No wonder my West Malaysian friend said in Sabah anything goes. My advice to the Housing Minister is, instead of concentrating on jailing housing developers, why don't you concentrate on solving simple matters like Strata Titles. Hefty fines and blacklisting developers will do. Jail does not necessarily solve everything. Their relatives or friends can start new companies and projects as their proxies. While house buyers suffer if a project is delayed or abandoned, equally frustrating will be living in a house for more than 10 years with no Strata Title in sight. Sabah Maju Jaya. Seats: Better late than never
Published on: Thursday, May 08, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 08, 2025 By: David Thien Text Size: Teng receiving two mementoes from Yong Teck Lee flanked by speakers, organisers and association heads. PENAMPANG: It is only now, two generations after the formation of Malaysia, that Sabahans and Sarawakians suddenly realised the Malaysian Constitution can be amended by West Malaysian parties commanding more than two third majority of the Dewan Rakyat. Which begs the question on the intelligence, sincerity or commitment of Sabah's leaders the past 60 years. For example, PAS has openly stated its desire to replace the Constitution with the supremacy of the Koran as the national supreme code for Malaysia if it controls the Federal Government which is possible if the party garners two-third of the votes in Parliament either on its own or through a coalition. When Singapore left the Federation in 1965, its 15 Parliamentary seats out of the 159 were not redistributed to Sarawak or Sabah. This was a grave historical error that needs to be rectified.
