Man shot by Broward sheriff's deputy in West Park

A man was shot by a Broward sheriff's deputy in West Park Sunday afternoon after punching a deputy in the face, according to the sheriff's office. The man, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital. An update on his condition was not immediately available. The incident began shortly before 12:30 p.m. when a 911 caller reported a 'suspicious incident involving a weapon,' on the 4000 block of S.W. 26 Street, said Carey Codd, spokesman for the sheriff's office. 'On scene an adult male subject punched a deputy in the face,' he said at a news conference, held in front of yellow crime-scene tape that blocked off the street of single-family houses between Pembroke Road and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. 'During the altercation, a deputy was forced to fire their weapon in response to the ongoing threat. The adult male subject was struck by the gunfire.' Deputies provided medical assistance at the scene, he said, and the man was taken to the hospital. The deputy who was punched was also taken to the hospital and appeared to be OK, Codd said. Codd said he didn't have information on whether the deputy who was punched was the same one who shot the man, how many shots were fired or whether any weapons were recovered in connection with the initial 911 call. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is standard in police-involved shootings, and the sheriff's office is also investigating, Codd said. Any deputies who fired their weapon will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
