Turnpike employees pay tribute to James Harper, the worker who was killed in I-77 accident

CRAB ORCHARD, WV (WVNS) – Employees of the West Virginia Parkways Authority took time out of their day to say their final goodbye to a beloved coworker who was recently killed. Beckley man identified as worker killed on I-77, one man arrested and charged April 14 was supposed to be a regular day for James Harper. Go to work, fill potholes, and end the day at home with his wife and newborn baby. Instead, his newborn baby will go her entire life without a father, his wife is now a widow, and his family no longer has their beloved son and brother due to a driver allegedly looking down while navigating a work zone. Harper's fellow coworkers with the West Virginia Parkways Authority striped the Lester Square Shopping Center parking lot to say their final goodbyes as Harper's funeral procession passed. 'He was a real good guy. [He] loved his family, just had a newborn baby, I mean – he thought the world of her,' said Eric Brewer, one of his coworkers. His coworkers Eric Brewer and Brian Barnabi remember exactly where they were when the news broke. 'I just happened to be on the roller ahead of him. I moved out of the way of the tractor trailer myself. [It was] traumatic. I mean, it was just disbelief,' said Barnabi. Brewer was not at the same section as Harper and Barnabi, but he was just up the road from the accident. 'The second thing came across the radio and said that they was doing CPR on him. It just floored me. I was asking who it was. The guys who were at the scene, they told me and that slammed me,' said Brewer. The message that Harper's mother wishes to send to everyone driving the roadways is, 'Slow down for them now, or slow down for them later. The cost of his life was way too high!' 'I am going to miss you, brother. Prayers for your family,' said Brewer. 'Fly high brother. Fly high,' added Barnabi. When you go to drive, please put the phone down. These workers and their families are depending on you. West Virginia delays $10 toll fee after ‘issues' with new system

CHARLESTON, (WBOY) — The West Virginia Parkway Authority said Friday that it is taking 'immediate actions' to address issues from its recently upgraded toll system. The new system, which was installed and maintained by TransCore, replaced an outdated system and added new payment options such as credit card and pay-by-plate. However, the release said that problems have been reported with the new system, especially concerning tolls and fees. 12 News has received several tips from West Virginia drivers saying they were charged $10 more than expected when driving on the West Virginia Turnpike and several reported dealing with hours-long wait times and hold with the West Virginia Parkway Authority's customer service. 'We know our customers have been frustrated with aspects of this new toll system,' Parkways Authority Interim Executive Director Parrish French said in the release. 'We apologize for the inconveniences and are committed to making the necessary changes to improve this system immediately.' Do you need to get a new driver's license before REAL ID deadline? A guide for West Virginians The actions being taken include delaying enforcement of the $10 'Fee for Notices of Tolls Due' until at least September 2025 and improving the customer service line available at 1-800-206-6222. The release also clarified that in the future, drivers who do not have an E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate account will have to use the cash lanes at most toll plazas, but for the North Beckley Plaza, travelers will need to visit to pay their tolls. The cash-rate for passenger vehicle tolls on the West Virginia Turnpike is $4.50. The West Virginia Parkways Authority will also launch a public education campaign to explain the new tolling system and will develop a new website. Some confusion with the new tolls system might have been related to a recent text scam where text messages claim that the receiver owes an amount to a state or local toll but includes a link to a duped version of official websites. The West Virginia Parkways Authority website says that it will not text drivers regarding their toll charges. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
