Interior design: Floored by all the options

Article content Picking flooring can seem like a monumental task. With so many materials and colours, how do you choose? Here are a few tips from the experts. Article content Article content Determine how much you can spend on the project. Inexpensive flooring choices include vinyl tiles, laminate flooring and wall-to-wall carpeting. If you have more funds for the project, you might look at natural stone (such as marble or granite), various types of hardwood or handmade tiles. Article content Article content Next, think about the way the room will be used. In high-traffic rooms with plumbing, you'll need a durable, water-resistant material. 'Ceramic tile is always a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms,' says Chris Maskell, CEO of the National Floor Covering Association of Canada. He adds that luxury vinyl plank products 'have taken the market by storm, because they replicate the look of wood.' They also resist chipping, making them an excellent choice for areas such as playrooms. Article content If a playroom is in a basement, you could also consider carpeting. 'Basements tend to be cooler, and for families with young children who spend time playing on the floor, a cozy and easy-to-clean carpet can add a lot of warmth.' Article content Article content Intriguingly, Lafleur also encourages clients to consider carpeting in a very different sort of space. 'We also love using carpet in walk-in closets for that extra touch of comfort.' Article content For bathrooms, mudrooms and foyers, non-slip tile or vinyl products increase safety on wet floors. In entryways, make sure the flooring you choose can stand up to Canadian weather. 'Durability and resistance to salt are crucial for mudrooms,' says Lafleur. 'The salt and snow we bring in during the winter can really impact certain flooring materials.' Article content
