Schuyler County Historical Society to host talk on Chemung Canal history
MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WETM) — The Schuyler County Historical Society is hosting its second 'Talkin' History' program on Sunday in Montour Falls.
The program will take place at the Silver Spoon Cafe inside the Schuyler County Human Services Complex on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. At this time, Schuyler County Historian Dr. Gary Emerson will present a talk titled 'Crime, Chaos and Craziness on the Chemung Canal!'
Whimsical Winter Market to return on Sunday in Elmira
'The dark side of the Chemung Canal's history includes murders, strikes, thievery, fighting and other bizarre incidents that are hidden in the archives,' said Dr. Emerson. 'This talk will reveal the violent and strange events that were once part of the canal culture in our communities.'
During the program, attendees will learn about the darker side of the Erie Canal and its feeder canals, which are often known for bringing economic opportunity and wealth. The event is free and open to anyone interested in attending.
