Concerns over UK migration are ‘terrorist'
A UK government training guide has labelled concerns over mass migration as an extremist ideology which could warrant outside intervention for purported 'deradicalization.' The so-called Prevent program lists 'far-right and extreme right-wing terrorism' as one of the key dangers facing the country. It also stressed that one of its hallmarks is 'cultural nationalism,' which it describes as a belief that ''Western Culture' is under threat from mass migration into Europe and from a lack of integration by certain ethnic and cultural groups.' The signs of 'cultural nationalism' include 'the rejection of… practices such as the wearing of the burqa or the perceived rise of the use of sharia law,' the advisory claims. It adds that another key concern is 'White Nationalism,' which espouses the idea that 'some sort of 'White' homeland' is under 'existential threat' due to demographic change. The Prevent strategy, which is part of the training provided to teachers, police officers, and health workers, among others, is intended to identify early signs of radicalization and intervene before individuals become involved in terrorism. It is also based on the notion that 'there is no socio-demographic profile of a terrorist in the UK, and no single pathway or 'conveyor belt', leading to terrorism.' The course has triggered a strong public backlash. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss suggested that 'most Britons would agree' with the statement that Western culture is under threat. 'We have a deep state that is working against the people. The Prevent program should be cancelled,' she wrote on X. Lord Young of Acton, general secretary of the Free Speech Union, warned that Prevent is targeting individuals 'whose views are entirely lawful but politically controversial.' In a letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, he said: 'Even mainstream, right-of-center beliefs risk being treated as ideologically suspect.' A Home Office spokesperson defended the program, saying: 'Prevent is not about restricting debate or free speech, but about protecting those susceptible to radicalization.' The UK has struggled for years to respond to domestic security challenges. In May, 20-year-old Ilyas Akhtar was charged with terrorism-related offences in Slough over two arson attacks and one bomb hoax incident aimed at a supermarket. Last October, Axel Rudakubana, the 18-year-old son of Rwandan immigrants to the UK, was charged with the murder of three young girls and the injury of another ten, also mostly children, in Southport, North West England. According to the Daily Telegraph, the latter had been referred to the Prevent program on at least three separate occasions prior to the rampage.

FBI discovers cache of guns, armor and Nazi paraphernalia while raiding home in Washington state
SEATTLE (AP) — Law enforcement discovered a cache of weaponry and armor, including a machine gun and grenade launchers, along with Nazi paraphernalia during a raid of a home in Washington state, authorities said Tuesday. Derek Sanders, the elected sheriff of Thurston County, said in a Facebook post that the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division asked his office for assistance Monday as an FBI special weapons and tactics team executed a search warrant in Lacey, near the state capitol of Olympia, 'as a result of a violent robbery and theft of military weaponry/armor.' The U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle said in a statement to The Associated Press on Tuesday night that the search warrant related to an Army CID and FBI investigation into an assault Sunday at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, just north of Olympia. Sanders' statement said two people were arrested and booked into Thurston County Jail for investigation of firearms-related offenses. 'The suspects identified in this case were actively involved in Nazi White Nationalist efforts,' he wrote. Sanders did not immediately return messages seeking comment Tuesday night. The U.S. Attorney's Office statement said Army investigators had identified suspects in the assault at the military base and the FBI executed the search warrant late Monday night into early Tuesday. Reached for comment, the FBI said its Seattle office was 'assisting our partners Thurston County Sheriff's Office and Army Criminal Investigation Division' and referred questions to them. Additional information was expected to be included in a federal criminal complaint to be unsealed Wednesday. The two people arrested were expected to make initial appearances at U.S. District Court in Tacoma on Wednesday afternoon. In his post, Sanders said agents had seized 35 firearms at the home, including short barrel rifles and an MG42 machine gun — a type typically supported with a bipod and which was used by German troops during World War II. Other seized gear included grenade launchers, explosives, body armor, ammunition and ballistic helmets, and multiple rifles were staged at windows throughout the residence, the sheriff said. He posted photos from the home showing an array of weapons, ammunition and body armor surrounded by Nazi paraphernalia, including a red Nazi flag emblazoned with a black swastika.

FTC Opens Investigation of Media Matters, Target of Elon Musk Lawsuit
Escalating the Trump Administration's attacks on groups associated with the American political left, the Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation of Media Matters for America over accusations similar to those made by staunch Trump ally Elon Musk. In letter to Media Matters staff on Wednesday morning. FTC says it is investigating whether the group colluded illegally with advertisers who pulled ads from X (formerly Twitter). Among other things, FTC is demanding the group turn over a large amount of internal documents including budgets, communications with other watchdog organizations, and documentation of how 'harmful' online content affects advertisers. In statement Wednesday, Media Matters said, 'the Trump administration has been defined by naming right-wing media figures to key posts and abusing the power of the federal government to bully political opponents and silence critics. It's clear that's exactly what's happening here, given Media Matters' history of holding those same media figures to account. These threats won't work; we remain steadfast to our mission.' Elon Musk filed a defamation lawsuit in November 2023 in response to a Media Matters report documenting repeated instances of paid ads placed next to pro-Nazi and white nationalist content on Twitter. The billionaire alleges the group 'manufactured' that evidence — which consisted of screenshots taken live on X — and also accused MMFA of collusion with advertisers. Media Matters denies such accusations and legal experts have repeatedly affirmed Musk's lawsuit is without merit and in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Critics also note that the lawsuit itself acknowledges that ads actually were placed next to extremist content on X. The lawsuit was filed in Federal District Court of Northern Texas, known for being extremely friendly to right wing interests. Presiding Judge Reed O'Connor is also a shareholder in Musk's electric vehicle company Tesla. Republican Attorneys General in Texas and Missouri have also opened investigations of Media Matters. Since Musk filed the lawsuit, mounting legal costs forced Media Matters to lay off a large number of employees and scale back some operations. MMFA, which tracks and reports on extremist content in right wing media, was founded in 2004 by former conservative activist and journalist David Brock.
