It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Super Drone!

The city of Wichita Falls has applied for a grant that would bring a super drone to the skies over the city. If the city gets the grant, it would acquire a smart drone capable of beating police and firefighters to the scene of crimes and mishaps. "Say you have a motor vehicle theft occurring or a burglary occurring or a fire. We can launch this thing and it gets there before our first responders get to it, and we can get eyes on what's happening in that situation prior to our arrival," Police Chief Manuel Borrego told councilors on Tuesday. "If there's a fire, we can send it out, the fire department can look at it and see what's going on and if they need to send more help." Borrego said the drone would be kept in a strategic location where a dispatcher or designated person could launch it. He said the drone can also launch itself when certain 911 calls come in. When its assignment is done, it can fly back to its home base, land, and change out its batteries. The drone would be part of a $305,000 catalytic converter grant from the Texas Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority. The city would have to pay $61,000 of the cost. Borrego said the city probably will not hear back about the application until late 2026. Former North Texas DA to serve jail time

Casey Hall, former 97th Judicial District Attorney, was convicted and sentenced Wednesday in Denton for stealing money from Montague County while she was in office, court documents show. Court records from the 362nd District Court in Denton County show that Hall was convicted by a jury and sentenced to one year in state jail for one count of misapplication of fiduciary property and six years of probation for one count of theft by a public servant. The court record also shows a financial assessment of about $9,457 was imposed on the former DA. Theft of property is a third degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison, and misapplication of fiduciary property is a state jail felony carrying a punishment of 180 days to two years in a state jail facility. Her trial had been moved to Denton County on a change of venue request. Hall was initially indicted for theft of property in July 2024, court records showed. On Feb. 11, 2025, a grand jury enhanced the indictment to theft by a public servant and misapplication of fiduciary property. She took between $2,500 and $30,000 of county money and put it into her own bank account, according to indictments. Hall served two terms as DA for the 97th Judicial District that includes Montague, Clay and Archer counties. She was defeated for reelection in the 2024 Republican primary by Henrietta attorney Katie Woods Boggeman. Hall left office voluntarily in August 2024 after former 97th Judicial District Attorney Tim Cole filed a petition to remove her. Boggeman replaced her at that time. Veterans take aim at wild hogs during annual ranch event

Big Country Veterans conducted the group's annual Veterans Helicopter Weekend on April 24-27 at the Circle Bar Ranch near Truscott about 100 miles west of Wichita Falls. The group has sponsored the event since 2016, according to its Facebook page. The helicopter hunts allow veterans to fly and hunt invasive hogs over thousands of acres of Texas ranch land, organizers said. Other activities the group supports include shooting at a gun range, axe throwing, shotgun competition, ranch tours and western cuisine. The nonprofit organization welcomed 18 new veterans and had more than 200 attendees at the 2025 event, according to the website. "Big Country Veterans strives to honor and support those who have sacrificed so much for our nation's freedoms. It is our mission to promote awareness of these sacrifices and bring communities together to foster healing environments and provide meaningful resources to help veterans and their families conquer life after combat," the group said on its website. The Benson Iris Society postponed its show. Here's the new date for the blooming event

The annual Benson Iris Society Show has been postponed to April 26 after local irises took a beating in April hail storms, Mary Rhoads, president and show chair of the organization, said Saturday. Free to the public, the show was set to take place Saturday, Rhoads said. But thunderstorms dropped hail in the Wichita Falls area April 4-5, leaving damage in their wake. "Any iris that was in bloom got totally creamed, I mean, shredded," Rhoads said. Irises have a long blooming season though, so more will be flowering by April 26, she said. The show will be open to the public 1:30-5 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 5800 Southwest Parkway. Both bare-rooted and potted irises will be for sale at the show, Rhoads said. The show is sanctioned by the American Iris Society. More information is available through the Benson Iris Society's Facebook group and by calling Rhoads at 940-704-5606.
