Local businesses benefit as Southern Miss hosts NCAA Regional
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – For the fourth time in program history, the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) will host a NCAA Regional Tournament this weekend. The impact of the game goes far beyond the baseball field. About 10,000 fans are expected to be in the Hub City this weekend. Tourism officials said nearly every hotel in the city is booked. 'Revenue comes in from out of town. People get to enjoy themselves. They deposit their revenue into our local restaurants, into our local hotels. And that in turn turns into tax dollars, which come back into the city so that we can continue to make improvements and make Hattiesburg the great city that it is,' said Frank James III, chairman of the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission. Restaurants have staffed up for the rush. Expect heavy traffic in Hattiesburg for baseball tournament 'For restaurants coming just out of one of our slowest times of the year, getting over that winter time slum, everybody's starting to get out, kids are finally out of school, families are finally going out to eat again. So really, it's honestly a great boost for us. So, we'll take it when we can get it. If we could have more Regionals, I would love to,' said William Thomas, Front of House supervisor for Ed's Burger Joint. 'We will have a good share of people coming in just because the tickets are hard to come by right now. And we have a good baseball following here at 4th Street. So, I think that will have a lot of Southern Miss faithful in here watching the games,' said Slade White, owner of 4th Street Bar. The weekend could be a grand slam and bring in around $4 million in revenue. Places like Serengeti Springs, the Hattiesburg Zoo and local theaters are also expected to be busy this weekend. WATCH: Suspected drunk driver hits Manatee deputy head-on, causes car to flip
BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — Multiple videos captured the moment a suspected drunk driver slammed head-on into a Manatee County deputy's patrol car over the weekend, sending the deputy's vehicle rolling. The crash happened just before midnight on Easter, with surveillance video showing the second the two vehicles collided on 301 Boulevard West in Bradenton. VIDEO: Florida man crashes ATV after leading officers on 30-mile chase with 12-inch knife Authorities said the deputy was on routine patrol that night. He was about to make a left turn into the parking lot of the MCSO's Operations Center when a pickup truck suddenly veered toward him and crashed head-on into his marked patrol car. The force from the crash caused the deputy's vehicle to rollover, coming to a stop on its roof. Bodycam video showed the deputy's colleagues rushing over to the upside-down vehicle and helping pull him out. He laid on the ground as another deputy asked him, 'Do you remember what happened?' 'Yeah, they crossed over the median and hit me head-on,' the deputy replied. The sheriff's office said the deputy was fortunate to have walked away with only minor abrasions. When deputies went to speak with the driver of the pickup truck, identified as William Thomas, 47, they said he was non-compliant with their commands, smelled of alcohol and displayed signs of impairment. Thomas was taken to a local hospital and, after being medically cleared, consented to a breath test. Authorities said the test showed he had blood alcohol concentrations of 0.279 and 0.268 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath — more than three times the legal limit. Thomas was booked into the Manatee County Jail for DUI and causing damage to property or injury to another person. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
