Cochin Shipyard Ltd delivers first of six cargo vessels to Norwegian firm

KOCHI: The Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) delivered the first vessel in a series of six 3,800 dead weight tonnage (DWT) dry cargo vessels to Norway's Wilson Ship Management AS, the largest short sea shipping company in Europe on Thursday. The vessel, christened Wilson Eco 1 Project, was built at the Udupi unit of the CSL and the vessel was handed over to the Norwegian firm at a function held at the New Mangalore Port. Chief financial officer of Wilson Ship Management AS, Einar Torsnes, New Build superintendent Sergey Bogdashov and the Wilson's site team were present at the occasion. Wilson Ship Management AS, headquartered in Bergen, is the largest short sea fleet in Europe. Every year they transport about 15 million tonnes of dry cargo across Europe. Wilson Ship Management has a fleet of around 130 vessels ranging from 1,500 to 8,500 DWT, all of similar design with a core objective to carry any cargo at any time. Subsequent to the start of production of the 3,800 series vessels, Wilson Ship Management has signed a further order for construction of eight 6,300 DWT general cargo vessels with Udupi-CSL at a total cost of Rs 1,041 crore. Udupi-CSL, formerly known as Tebma Shipyards Limited, was taken over by CSL in 2020 through an order of the National Company Law Tribunal and started operations in 2021. In the last three years, the shipyard has constructed and delivered eight aluminium hulls for the Kochi Water Metro Project, eight tuna long liner-cum-gill netters, two 62 T Bollard Pull Tugs for Ocean Sparkle Limited and two 70T Bollard Pull Tugs to Polestar Maritime Limited.

New milestone in maritime history: Udupi Cochin Shipyard delivers first green cargo vessel to Norway

Mangaluru: In a significant stride for India's maritime manufacturing and its Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative, Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has delivered the first of six next-generation green cargo vessels to Norway-based Wilson Ship Management AS, the largest short-sea shipping operator in Europe. The 3,800 DWT vessel, christened Wilson Eco 1, was formally delivered on Wednesday at a ceremony held at the New Mangalore Port. The ship is part of an ambitious collaboration under Norway's green funding programme for sustainable maritime transport and represents a landmark entry for Indian shipbuilding into the European market for eco-friendly cargo carriers. The delivery marks the first in a series of six vessels built at a total project cost of Rs506 crore. Notably, following the commencement of this contract, Wilson Ship Management AS placed an additional order with UCSL for eight 6,300 DWT general cargo vessels worth Rs1,041 crore, underscoring the strategic value of this Indo-Norwegian partnership. Dr. Sushma Akkaraju, spouse of Dr. Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Authority, christened the vessel in the presence of dignitaries from Wilson Ship Management, UCSL, CSL, Bureau Veritas, and the Port Authority. Green engineering and global design Designed by Conoship International, a Dutch firm known for cutting-edge marine engineering, Wilson Eco 1 features a diesel-electric propulsion system and is 'future-proofed' for upgrades, including wind-foil units and battery hybridisation. It is engineered for all-weather, unrestricted operations across inland and coastal European waters. With a length of 89.43 metres and a beam of 13.2 metres, the vessel runs at 10.5 knots using only 750kW of propulsion power. It is classed by Bureau Veritas and sails under the Norwegian flag. The project generated direct employment for over 800 individuals and engaged an extensive network of Indian MSMEs. Additionally, UCSL partnered with national skill development agencies to train and certify 100–150 workers in diesel-electric marine systems, building long-term industry capacity for high-value exports. 'The successful delivery of Wilson Eco 1 is not just a technological milestone but a statement of India's growing competence in building complex, sustainable vessels for global markets,' said Shri Harikumar A., CEO of UCSL. The delivery signals India's shift from being a buyer to a builder and exporter of green maritime solutions. UCSL, formerly TEBMA Shipyards Ltd., was revived after CSL's acquisition in 2020 through an NCLT order. Since 2021, it has delivered multiple landmark projects, including aluminium ferries for the Kochi Water Metro and ocean-going tugs under the PMMSY scheme.

The delivery ceremony was held at the New Mangalore Port. Sushma Akkaraju, wife of AV Ramana, chairman, NMPA, christened the new vessel as Wilson Eco 1. Senior officials of Wilson Ship Management AS, Norway, including Einar Torsnes, chief financial officer, Sergey Bogdashov, new build superintendent, and the Wilson site team were present. Harikumar A, CEO of UCSL, and members of the Udupi CSL team, was present. Wilson Eco 1 is developed under the Norwegian govt's green funding initiative for emission-free transport solutions. The project is valued at approximately Rs 506 crore. It is an eco-friendly diesel-electric vessel , designed for general cargo transport across European inland and coastal waters, and is ready for future upgrades with wind foil units and battery hybrid systems. The construction generated direct employment for over 800 personnel and supported a broad network of MSMEs and ancillary services. The project's milestones began with the contract effective on June 27, 2023. The steel cutting commenced on Dec 4, 2023. The keel laying began on April 27, 2024. The sea trials were completed by April 6, 2025.

Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (USCL) on Wednesday delivered the first in a series of six 3,800 T dead-weight dry cargo vessels, Wilson Eco 1, to M/s. Wilson Ship Management AS, Norway, the largest short sea shipping company of Europe in Mangaluru. The formal delivery programme was organised at New Mangalore Port here in the presence of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) chairman A.V. Ramana and senior officers of NMPA. Senior officials of M/s Wilson Ship Management AS, Einar Torsnes, Chief Financial Officer, Sergey Bogdashov, New Build Superintendent and the Wilson site team were present. USCL CEO A Harikumar, General Manager CEO, UCSL and Sivaram N Swamy and others were present. In the last three years, Udupi shipyard in a release here said it has constructed and delivered eight aluminium hulls for Cochin Shipyard Ltd. for the Kochi Water Metro Project; eight tuna long liner cum gillnetters under the Pradhan Mantri Mathsya Sampada Yojana; two 62 tonne bollard pull ASTDS tugs to M/S Ocean Sparkle Ltd., an Adani harbour services company, and two 70-tonne bollard pull ASTDS tugs to M/s Polestar Maritime Ltd., complying with the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative of the Union government. The shipyard has also signed orders for construction of another 11 70-T bollard pull tugs with M/s Ocean Sparkle and one 70-T bollard pull tug with M/s Polestar Maritime. The contracts signed with Ocean Sparkle Limited for construction of eleven 70-T tugs is the largest series tug construction order ever signed by an Indian shipyard. Wilson Eco 1 is designed as an all-weather ship for unrestricted operation with unmanned machinery space certification. It is also equipped with all navigation and communication equipment as per the latest class and flag requirements. Under 'Make in India Make for the World' initiative of UCSL, the shipyard has used steel manufactured domestically for construction of the entire vessel, including the piping systems.
