Windsor Family Homes marks 50 years of service with open house celebration
A local non-profit agency that's helped thousands of vulnerable residents in Windsor over five decades is marking a major milestone this week. Windsor Family Homes and Community Partnerships, formerly known as Windsor Homes Coalition Inc., is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an open house Wednesday afternoon. The event, held at 900 Howard Ave. from 12:30 to 3 p.m., will showcase the agency's history, highlight current programs and offer a look ahead at its goals under a new strategic plan. The organization was founded in 1975 to provide affordable housing and wraparound supports to people in need. Over the years, its mission expanded to include food security through the launch of the Kids First Food Bank and a number of free youth programs, including the I Can Summer Camp and Kids First Grow. Angela Yakonich, executive director of the agency, said the anniversary is a chance to reflect on five decades of impact—and to acknowledge the ongoing need for its services. 'I am so excited to be part of celebrating 50 years of the agency,' Yakonich said. 'I have the privilege of working alongside a team of individuals who strive every day to make the lives of a vulnerable population better. We know that we are living in uncertain times and that our services are needed even more.' Windsor Family Homes currently manages more than 120 affordable rental units across the city and relies heavily on the support of volunteers and community partners to deliver its programs. The organization also runs an adopt-a-family program during the holiday season, connecting donors with families in need.
