Why Pride of Jenni trainers are pumped ahead of Doomben Cup

Off the plane and straight to work for Pride Of Jenni in preparation for the Group 1 Doomben Cup. Pride Of Jenni arrived in Brisbane on Tuesday night and was given a canter on the treadmill on Wednesday morning as she heads to the Group 1 2000m weight-for-age contest at Doomben on Saturday. Jack Turnbull, assistant trainer for Ciaron Maher, said Pride Of Jenni was a part of a contingent of horses that flew into Brisbane for the Winter Carnival. 'She travelled up last night and travelled well,' Turnbull said. 'She had a big drink, and then we worked her on the treadmill this morning, she had a canter and then had a pick. 'It was all very light, but she'll be ridden (on Thursday) and then it will all be light into the weekend.' Turnbull said the team at Cranbourne had maintained Pride Of Jenni's fitness since her win at Caulfield over 1600m earlier in the month. Two gallops on the treadmill and a gallop under saddle maintained the mare's fitness levels. 'She had two good gallops on the treadmill as that way we can control and monitor what she does,' Turnbull said. 'She also had a nice gallop on the Monday which Craig (Newitt) came in for. 'She's at a level of fitness where we do not have to get her fit, just maintain her, and make sure she's in the best form, which we believe she is. 'Everything we see off the tread, off the track, the feel for Craig and off her other rider, it's all very positive and what you need. 'We took blood from her, which was all good, so fingers crossed leading into Saturday morning there's no travel sickness that pops up, which can happen from time to time. 'She's an older mare and has travelled fine.' Turnbull conceded the Doomben Cup will be a different scenario on Saturday with the calibre of horse engaged. But from barrier one, he believes Pride Of Jenni is perfectly drawn. 'She's drawn perfectly and if the rain does fall, she's got the wet track form,' Turnbull said. 'Her racing pattern, which we all know, makes it on a track like that. 'Antino is drawn out in 11, and they'll have to make a call pretty quick where they land and sit, but Jenni, she's in good shape.'

Winter Carnival to bring the Ellicottville community together this weekend

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) — Even though the clocks spring forward this weekend, there's still time for skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville. They have events planned all month long, including this weekend with their Winter Carnival. 'We'll see thousands of people there this weekend,' said Dash Hegeman, Director of Marketing with Holiday Valley. 'It's a little weather dependent, but even when the weather is not perfect, people come out for this.' From live music, to their annual snow bar, to face painting, ice cream socials, and skiing competitions, there are events planned for all ages on Saturday and Sunday. With the consistent cold temperatures and around 180 inches of snowfall so far this season, Hegeman says this winter has been night and day compared to the last two. 'I would encourage anyone that hasn't been happy with this winter to start skiing and snowboarding and then they'll be happy with it because it has been fantastic,' Hegeman said. 'When we're successful, the village is successful and vice versa. We're stoked to be able to do our part to bring people into this Western New York community.' 'Our goal is to bring people into Ellicottville, we want them to stay the weekend, we want them to shop, we want them to dine, we want them to come down during the week too and make a whole vacation out of it because we are a resort and destination,' Barb Pump, executive director of Ellicottville's Chamber of Commerce said. The Chamber of Commerce says their village Mardi Gras weekend traditions, including the Mardi Gras parade, started more than 25 years ago, to bring people into Ellicottville, promote the businesses, and bring the whole community together. 'Holiday Valley Ski Patrol does a collection for the food pantry, and this year–there's going to be a boot collection for Zach Golley, there was a tragedy that happened,' said Pump. 'They are going to be out there this weekend on Saturday, collecting funds for his wife Emily and their daughter Bailey.' Pump says anyone who cannot make it to the parade, but would like to donate, should call the Village of Ellicotville for more information, or donate to the GoFundMe page. The village's annual Mardi Gras Parade will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. For more information on the Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival activities, visit the Chamber of Commerce website here. One of the carvers said they have prepared their greatest hits and are excited to bring them to life. Fore! Barstool Open returning for another year 'We're going to have a big basketball scene, it's going to have a couple basketball players and a big basketball hoop, it's a pretty fun ice sculpture and we're going to have a huge lion that's going to be carved as well. Those are two of my favorite ones and I think one of the crowd favorites will be an interactive tractor, you'll be able to sit on a three-dimensional tractor with big tires, it will be a fun one for sure,' said Jared McAlister, an ice carver for DiMartino Ice. Downtown Erie businesses team up for first Winter Soup Stroll

For those who had a case of the winter blues, downtown Erie was supplied with the perfect remedy. The Flagship City Food District teamed up with downtown brick-and-mortar businesses for the first-ever winter soup stroll. People were able to visit seven different stores for a soup sample. Testers were also able to vote for the 'best soup' winner. Stephanie Hunt, the owner of Copper Carriage came up with this idea as a way to get people out of their homes during the winter season. 'I know with the weather than we have had this winter, everybody is kind of tired of being cooped up so it's a great way just to get everybody downtown and visiting the boutiques and the stores and the restaurants when it might be a slow time of year for us,' she said. This event was a part of Erie's Winter Carnival and took place from noon to 4 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Frozen fun kicks off downtown at Erie Winter Carnival

Cold winds and steady snow set the stage Thursday night to kick off this year's winter carnival in downtown Erie. The Erie Downtown Partnership is hosting its fifth annual Winter Carnival this weekend, bringing live music and winter fun to State Street. Many Erie residents are probably fed up with the cold temperatures and heavy snow by now but this weekend the Erie Downtown Partnership is giving people a chance to embrace the winter. The Erie Winter Carnival kicked off at the flagship city food hall Thursday night with a live performance from Lifethrumusic, a gospel band that doubles as a music mentoring program. 'Oh man, there's no better way to spend the night. There's no better way to spend the night. We communicate, we enjoy each other, and it's creativity like exploding. Sometimes, we don't even plan a song, we sit and we just fill it out and just have a blast,' said Patrick Lyons, the bassist for Lifethrumusic. And over at the Perry Square stage, the festivities continued with the Flagship City Sports and Sips Curling League. One player said he has no problem curling out in the cold and even met his fiance through the sport. 'I think it's just a cool thing to bring to Erie. I've always seen it on TV and it looked cool, so it's awesome to be able to try out a version of it,' said Steve Gibbens, a curler. We got music. We got curling. We got a ton of stuff happening here, but there's something missing here at the Erie Winter Carnival, and the events manager said that it's actually going to add to the overall experience. 'Unfortunately, our ice sculptures are going to have to be moved to next weekend for circumstances kind of out of our control, but we're used to pivoting, we do it with weather and during COVID all the time, so we're having two weekends of winter fun here at the end of February and we're going to keep the party going next weekend,' said Dave Tamulonis, Erie Downtown Partnership events manager. Over 60 ice sculptures will decorate Perry Square next weekend. But in the meantime, the show goes on at the winter carnival with fire dancing Friday night, a soup-tasting stroll Saturday afternoon and plenty of live music at local businesses all weekend long.
