‘Thunderbolts*' Unveils Title Asterisk In Post-Opening Marketing Stunt; U.S. Box Office Debut At $74M

So what exactly did that asterisk mean after all in the Thunderbolts* title? On Monday, Marvel finally answered that question on its social media handles as well as in outdoor ads and in-theater promos in the top markets. Th asterisk denotes the movie's subtitle *The New Avengers, which the movie's ragtag group of Winter Soldier, Ghost, John Walker, Alexei Shostakov and Yelena Belova represents. They're all expected to segue to Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Doomsday which will fire off next summer, May 1, 2026. The post-opening marketing stunt comes in the wake of Thunderbolts* opening to $74 million (instead of the reported $76M) after an estimated $18M Sunday, off 27% from Saturday's $24.5M. Disney will be reporting its official figure soon. The Jake Schreier-directed movie had great exits with an A- CinemaScore, 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience rating and Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak exits of 71% definite recommend and 4 1/2 stars. Based off that, Disney is hoping for a second-weekend hold that improves upon previous less-than-$100M openers, i.e., Eternals ($71.2M, 62% second-weekend drop, B CinemaScore, $164.8M final) and Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8M opening, 68% second-weekend plummet, B- CinemaScore, $200.2M domestic final). #MovieReview: Thunderbolts* is a scrappy return to form for Marvel

Thunderbolts* is one of the best Marvel movies in a decade and might breathe new life into the flailing franchise. The new offering is emblematic of the post-Avengers problem, with few recognisable characters available and a heavy reliance on bottom-of-the-barrel heroes. Thunderbolts* turns that misfit feeling into a feature rather than an unfortunate necessity, bringing together a forgotten group to become greater than the sum of their parts. Florence Pugh (Black Widow) leads a cast that includes only one major name – the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The other roles are filled out by reliable backup talent, chiefly David Harbour as an over-the-hill Russian super soldier and Lewis Pullman (son of actor Bill) in a dual performance. The film never tries to disguise its lack of star power, instead letting the ragtag crew find an unconventional rhythm that feels earned rather than forced by focus-group feedback. And if, like me, you have not watched even half of the Marvel movies and TV shows to keep up with the continuity, that's fine too. Thunderbolts* gives enough exposition to allow anyone to follow the major moments and enjoy the overall product. That product is not perfect, but it has plenty of jokes that land, some solid fight scenes and third act visuals that are genuinely inventive and interesting. Combine that with plenty of heart in the performances and just the right amount of scrappy underdog sentiment and you have a recipe for an enjoyable time at the movies. If Marvel's upcoming big swings – Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25) and Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) – work, then there could be enough positive momentum to bring it back to the heart of pop culture. The cast of 'THUNDERBOLTS*' revealing the film's actual title 'THE NEW AVENGERS' Read our review: — DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) May 5, 2025 From left to right: David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, and Wyatt Russell as USAgent in Thunderbolts* From left to right: David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, and Wyatt Russell as USAgent in Thunderbolts* DISNEY It makes sense considering an ongoing theme in both "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Thunderbolts*" is the absence of the Avengers, though there are a lot of questions that this raises. For example, considering he was ready to form his own heroic team of Avengers, exactly how is Captain America (Anthony Mackie) going to feel about this new team of Avengers forming without him? How would the rest of the surviving Avengers feel about this, like Thor and the Hulk? Is this setting up some kind of clash between old Avengers and new in "Avengers: Doomsday" and/or "Avengers: Secret Wars"? That the MCU Thunderbolts should become the New Avengers is also somewhat fitting considering it was also an absence of Avengers that helped the concept blossom in the source material. During a time when most of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four are believed dead, a group of supervillains rebrands themselves as heroes and become the first Thunderbolts. The fact that the Avengers are gone helps the villains gain the public's trust. "Thunderbolts*" is off to a promising start. The film took in $76 million domestically over the weekend and $162 million globally. The Marvel film had a production budget of $180 million. "Thunderbolts*" is playing in theaters now. The film is directed by Jake Schreier and stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Edward Price, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
