Parents drop off students for final day at Trowbridge School ahead of lead-related closure

The scene outside Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies Friday had all the hallmarks of a regular school day. But even as parents and kids said goodbye around 7:35 a.m., it was clear the day was anything but. Families and staff learned Thursday evening their school would be closed indefinitely starting Monday so pressing lead hazards could be addressed. Students will be relocated to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Lifelong Learning, 1017 N. 12th St., while the work is underway. Although families were told they could contact the Trowbridge office to arrange an excused absence Friday, many still dropped their children off for their final day in the building that's well over a century old. To get inside, kids, teachers and parents passed a crowd of reporters with video cameras and microphones who had questions about lead hazards recently identified at the school. Waiting at the school's main entrance was a staff member who ushered them inside. The historic Victorian-style school is made of Milwaukee's classic cream-colored brick, and reads 1894 on its outside entrance, the year it was built. Trowbridge is the latest Milwaukee Public Schools building to raise alarms for health officials over lead hazards that pose a particular risk to the young children who spend day after day inside. The department has issued orders to address lead hazards at two schools — Golda Meir Lower Campus and Albert E. Kagel Dual Language School — but Trowbridge is the first ordered to close for such work. This story will be updated.
