Egg prices are finally starting to fall in Wisconsin. Will it last?

Though egg prices in the Midwest and nationally are finally starting to tick back down, grocery prices are still higher across the board compared to a year ago. Between March and April, the national average price for Grade A eggs decreased by 12.7% to $5.12 per dozen according to the latest consumer price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Though that's the first month-to-month decline since October 2024, egg prices are still far below pre-avian flu levels of under $2 a dozen. In March, the average price for a dozen eggs hit $6.23 — the highest in at least 20 years. Still, bolstered by the dip in egg prices, the national average price for meat, poultry, fish and eggs overall also decreased by 0.9% between March and April. In the Midwest, meat, poultry, fish and eggs prices declined by 0.7% — though both national and Midwest prices in this category are still about 7% higher than a year ago. Here's how other grocery prices shifted in Midwest last month. Though the price of nonalcoholic beverages rose by 0.8% in the Midwest, prices decreased across all of the other major grocery categories, according to the consumer price index: Cereal and bakery product prices fell by 1.5% Meat, poultry, fish and egg prices fell by 0.7% Dairy and related product prices fell by 1.2% Fruit and vegetable prices fell by 0.3% The overall price of groceries the Midwest decreased by 0.6% between March and April. That's a shift from the 0.2% increase between February and March, but prices are still 2.4% higher than a year ago. Egg prices across the U.S. have been rocketing since 2022, primarily due to a nationwide avian flu outbreak that has have killed millions of hens and triggered widespread egg shortages. As of April 7, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection had detected avian influenza in commercial poultry flocks in Burnett and Barron counties and backyard flocks in Kenosha and Sheboygan counties. Though bird flu detections "eased significantly in March," the U.S. Department of Agriculture still predicted egg prices may rise as much as 54.6% throughout 2025 in an April report. Still, if bird flu cases remain relatively low, the price decrease could hold in the coming months, according to USA TODAY. In March, University of Wisconsin-Extension poultry specialist Ron Kean also told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he expected egg prices to start declining after Easter. "As we hit warmer weather, it's a little less baking going on, and people are maybe not eating as heavy breakfasts, so usually demand will go down as we get into the spring," Kean said. Authorities warn against parking scams during the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay

Authorities are warning travelers of possible scams as thousands of visitors make their way to Green Bay for the 2025 NFL Draft. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is warning drivers against potential parking scams in Green Bay. Separately, authorities are warning Wisconsin residents against scam texts telling E-ZPass holders they owe unpaid toll fees that must be paid immediately. Here's what you need to know to avoid potential parking scams at the NFL draft. The DATCP warned draft attendees against several type of potential parking scams: Some automated parking meters require you to pay online with your phone, and provide a QR code to scan for payment. Scammers may place fraudulent QR codes over valid ones, so you should check QR codes carefully for possible tampering. After scanning the code, double check the web address and make sure it matches the parking company on the meter. Scammers may also dress as parking attendants and solicit people's money for parking spots they do not have the right to sell. To avoid this, research parking spots ahead of time and pay with a credit card if possible, since banks have built-in fraud protections. Scammers may also leave fake parking tickets on cars or send fraudulent texts and emails claiming you have unpaid tickets. Do not open links or make payments in response to unsolicited messages, and contact local law enforcement to verify if a ticket is real before paying. Scam texts about unpaid tolls have also circulated in Wisconsin in recent months. The texts, which target E-ZPass holders, provide a fraudulent link seeking to get sensitive personal and financial information from the receiver. E-ZPass does not text users asking for payment, and there are no toll roads in Wisconsin. Find more information about avoiding and reporting the scam here. You can find official parking and transportation information for the NFL draft by visiting or downloading the NFL OnePass app. Parking will be available near Lambeau Field and local businesses and home owners will offer parking spaces near the event, which are in walking distance of the stadium, according to its website. Additional county in Wisconsin added to quarantine list for invasive moth species from Europe

(WFRV) – An additional county in Wisconsin has been added to a quarantine list regarding the spongy moth, an invasive insect from Europe now present in three-quarters of the counties in the state. According to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), La Crosse County became the 54th of 72 counties in Wisconsin to be listed as a quarantine for this moth, which eats leaves of over 300 tree species. Man jumps into Wisconsin River in attempt to avoid arrest, Police & Fire departments rescue him Most of eastern and central Wisconsin have already been considered infested by the spongy moth. It's the first time since 2023 that a new county has been added to the quarantine. Plant nurseries, Christmas tree farms, loggers and sawmills are impacted the most due to restrictions and inspection guidelines. Each of these businesses have to enter compliance agreements with regulators to certify their products are free of these moths before transporting into non-quarantined locations. People who go camping must be careful, especially when they're in a quarantine county. Moving outdoor items can be risky and should not be done without clear inspections, as spongy moths can lay egg masses on almost anything outside, with these masses containing up to 1,000 eggs. 'If you are going camping or heading to your cabin, check your gear before leaving to ensure you aren't carrying spongy moth egg masses or caterpillars with you,' DATCP Plant Industry Bureau Director Brian Kuhn said via release. 'Ophelia is home!': NEW Zoo announces the safe return for one of its two missing otters Kuhn said it's crucial to inspect thoroughly, especially if you're heading into a space without a quarantine, because it can quickly infest a county without showing immediate damage. GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As Green Bay prepares to host the 2025 NFL Draft, authorities are warning fans and visitors to be vigilant against scams targeting those attending the event. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has released a list of common scams to watch for ahead of the draft, which begins April 24. With hundreds of thousands of visitors expected in Green Bay, many will turn to short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and HomeToGo for accommodations. Consumers should be cautious if a host asks them to communicate or pay outside the rental platform, as scammers often use this tactic to avoid detection. Additionally, payments should be made through secure methods, avoiding cryptocurrency, prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, or cash apps. General admission to the NFL Draft campus and the NFL Draft Experience fan festival is free and does not require tickets. However, scammers may attempt to sell fraudulent tickets for these events or create fake giveaways.
