Lowry and Straka in joint lead of Truist Championship

Truist Championship third round leaderboard -14 S Lowry (Ire), S Straka (Aut); -11 K Mitchell (US), J Thomas (US); -10 H Matsuyama (Jpn) Selected others: -8 R McIlroy (NI); -7 T Fleetwood (Eng); -5 X Schauffele (US); -4 M Fitzpatrick (Eng), J Spieth (US); -2 A Rai (Eng); -1 R MacIntyre (Sco) Full leaderboard Shane Lowry will go into the final day of the Truist Championship in the joint lead with his European Ryder Cup team-mate Sepp Straka. Irishman Lowry carded a three-under par 67 in a third round that included five birdies and two bogeys. The last of his five birdies came on the 17th and moved him level with Austrian Straka, who hit a 66, on 14 under at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course. "I'm driving the ball pretty straight, not very far but it's going on the fairway, and once I get myself on the fairway I can be dangerous," said Lowry. "If I can hole a few putts [on Sunday] you never know." He added: "This is a tough game and a tough tour and it's hard to win out here. You just have to keep putting yourself in position week after week and do your best. I'm going to give it my best. "I'm playing a good friend of mine in Sepp, my Ryder Cup partner. Hopefully, one of us can get the job done." Defending champion Rory McIlroy, who has won this event four times when it has been played at Quail Hollow, the venue for next week's US PGA Championship, is six off the lead after an up and down 69. McIlroy beat England's Justin Rose in a play-off to complete the career Grand Slam with victory at the Masters last month. Rose played the first two rounds of this event and was seven over par but withdrew prior to the third round of the no-cut tournament. "After becoming progressively ill over the past few days, I have made the unfortunate decision to withdraw," he said. "It's best for me to focus on a quick recovery prior to next week." Fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood went round in a three-under par 67 as he moved onto seven under. Japan's Hideki Matsyama hit one of the rounds of the day, a 63 which included nine birdies and two bogeys, as he improved to 10 under.

Golf fans enjoy perfect day at Philadelphia Cricket Club for day 3 of Truist Championship

It was a gorgeous day at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course on Saturday, as thousands of fans took in day three of the Truist Championship. CBS Philadelphia Fans like Michael Raphael made sure to capture the moment the best they could. "It's special. It's exciting," Raphael said. Raphael said it was the perfect golfing weather and a great day to spend time with family. It was his son Ezra's first tournament. "Being able to come to my home course, seeing pro players play golf is amazing," Ezra said. John Cavanaugh had the privilege of bringing his best friend's son, Grady Stiles. It was also his first tournament, which he said lived up to expectations. "It's super-duper fun," Stiles said. "It's great to be at a golf course and enjoy the beautiful weather," Cavanaugh said. Fans said the experience over the past three days has been amazing and something you can't get by watching on television. They said the best part, besides the beautiful course, was seeing the golfers in person. "Seeing how easily it is to drive the ball 300-plus yards is phenomenal and a great experience," Derrick Benns said. Benns also had one of the best spots on the course. He was just a feet away from hole 17. "It's great to be able to sit here. The players are walking past us, five, eight, ten feet is really great," Benns said. Fans said it's those kinds of moments that make a trip to the course well worth it. "It's a cool place to watch a golf tournament, that's for sure," Cavanaugh said. And for many fans, it's an experience they'll cherish for a long time.

Take a video tour of the Philadelphia Cricket Club Wissahickon Course before pros arrive for Truist Championship

Take a tour of the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, site of Truist Championship Take a tour of the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, site of Truist Championship Take a tour of the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, site of Truist Championship The Philadelphia Cricket Club Wissahickon Course was built more than 100 years ago. To accommodate thousands of fans for the Truist Championship, things look a little different this week. Jim Smith, COO and director of golf and Flourtown general manager, took CBS News Philadelphia on a tour of the historic golf course. The course holes were rerouted to accommodate the thousands of people coming to watch the best golfers tee off. "I look at it and I'm like, this is insane. It's literally insane what they do to get ready for a big event like this," Smith said. It's a "pinch me moment" for Smith, who's been here for 20 years. "This is a great place. A lot of people have always given us a lot of love. ... When this materialized in early '24 and we started talking, we're kind of like pinching ourselves, going, 'Is this really going to happen?'" Smith said. It certainly is happening — and happening quickly. The hospitality build-out, for instance, only started a few months ago. "One of the things as a spectator that I would be looking for ... would be try to find locations where there's a little bit of elevation so you can see a lot," Smith said. A good tip from Smith for the 12,000-14,000 fans expected each day during the championship. "This is going to show the world how Philadelphia treats golf, and how much they love it," Smith said. Smith said "virtually every player" is coming to the tournament, and none of them, he said, have ever been here. He describes it as a "cozy environment." "I think people that come to this and have been to others, will tell you that this will be the best viewing opportunity they've ever had at a professional golf event," Smith said. With that, the tour continues to the tournament front nine, which is the best place, Smith believes, for people to watch. "First of all, it's a great spot to watch just because there's no buildings," Smith said. "So you're going to have basically a par 5 that the players are going to be salivating to get their paws on because it's probably going to be a birdie hole. It's going to be followed by two par 4s that are both fairly difficult, but could make birdie, and then a brutal par 3." Smith suggests fans start here, and then take an hour or two to walk the entire course. CBS News Philadelphia "This is just going to be a really cool week, and the world of golf and many other eyes are going to be on us and we'll do our best to do a great job," Smith said. There's certainly some Philly flair for fans to experience. "We've been doing golf and this has to be one of the most special venues because Tillinghast design – you get so many golf views," Eric Chaves, director of sales for the Truist Championship, said. "Really we built a little city within Philly Cricket Club. Right across from the fan shop is what we call Independence Square."
