DSU women close NSAA era with conference title
MADISON, S.D. (DSU) — Trailing four points after the first quarter, NAIA's nationally ranked Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Jamestown (N.D.) in each of the next three quarters to earn a 65-59 victory in the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament championship game at DSU Fieldhouse Tuesday evening. The Trojans earned the league's automatic bid to the NAIA Women's National Tournament Opening Round, which is set to kick off on the weekend of March 14-15 where DSU hosts the First and Second Rounds. Dakota State extended their winning streak to seven games, raising their overall record to 24-4. Jamestown, the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, fell to 19-10 and await to see if they have enough to secure an at large invitation to the national tournament. The conference postseason tournament marked the end of the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball. The Trojans appeared in the NSAA championship game for five straight years, reclaiming their tournament title for the first time since the 2021-22 season. It is DSU's third NSAA tournament title in school history. Tuesday's contest might be the final series meeting between DSU and UJ before they make their athletics transition next season. Dakota State completed a perfect 4-0 record with Jamestown in the season series meetings (twice at DSU Fieldhouse and twice in Jamestown, N.D.). The NAIA Women's Basketball Selection Show will be held on Thursday evening at 6 p.m., via NAIA Network/YouTube. The social event will be held at Heartland Captain's Club, starting at 5:30 p.m. RSVP will be needed for the event. (8) Dakota State (S.D.) 65, Jamestown (N.D.) 59 – FINAL Jamestown opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers from Kate Cordes and Samantha Paulsen for a 6-0 lead with eight minutes, thirty-two seconds on the clock. The Trojans snapped their scoring drought with a 3-pointer from Angela Slattery (assisted by Lilli Mackley) with 7:36 on the clock in the first quarter (DSU trailed 6-3). After Mackley's 3-pointer (assisted by Cierra Watkins) to trim Dakota State's deficit to 8-6, the Jimmies went on scored five straight points to balloon their lead to 13-7 after Paulsen's 3-pointer (assisted by Jailyn Martinson) with 4:33 to go. Tabor Teel hit a pair of free throws as the Trojans trailed 18-14 by the end of the first quarter. UJ shot 7-of-17 from the field (41.2 percent) in the first ten minutes, including 4-of-9 from the 3-point line. DSU was 4-of-12 from the field (33.3 percent) and 4-of-8 3-pointers. Dakota State went on a 9-2 scoring run to gain their first lead of the game at 21-20, capped by a layup from Slattery with 6:38 on the clock in the second period. Both teams went through five lead changes and two ties in the second period. Kate Busek hit a basket with less than 35 seconds left for UJ's 28-27 lead. Slattery nailed down a driving layup as second quarter ended to give DSU a 29-28 halftime lead. Dakota State outscored Jamestown 15-10 in the second period. Both teams struggled from the field, with DSU shooting 23.5 percent (4-of-17 field goals) and UJ 33.3 percent (4-of-12 field goals). The Trojans were 6-of-6 from the field in the second quarter. DSU and UJ traded leads in the early going of the third quarter before the Jimmies regained a seven-point lead. Leading 36-34, the Jimmies went on a 5-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 41-34 after Jessca Lofstrom's basket (assisted by Jayden Wiest). DSU was forced to call a timeout with 5:25 to go in the third. The Trojans answered with a 13-2 outburst in the final 5:07 of the third quarter, highlighted by Watkins' 3-pointer (assisted by Hamtyn Heinz) for a 47-43 lead. DSU outscored UJ 18-15 in the third quarter. Dakota State was 6-of-13 from the field (46.2 percent) compared to Jamestown 6-of-15 field goals (40 percent). The Trojans ballooned their scoring run into the fourth period, scoring the first seven points to balloon their run to 20-2. Olivia Ritter hit a layup to post the biggest lead of the game at 54-43, forcing the Jimmies to call a timeout with 7:14 remaining. Jamestown could get no closer than four points at 61-57 after a 3-pointer by Cordes with 1:49 left in the game and 63-59 with less than 30 seconds to go. DSU outscored UJ 18-16 in the final quarter. UJ was 43.8 percent from the field (7-of-16 field goals) compared to DSU 4-of-9 field goals (44.4 percent). The Trojans were 9-of-14 at the free throw line in the fourth period. Watkins scored season-high 18 points on her 5-of-8 field goals and 7-of-10 free-throws for Dakota State. She added six rebounds and four assists (tied career high). Mackley added 12 points. Slattery added 11 points and eight rebounds. Teel tallied eight points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Ritter scored six points off the bench for DSU. Kenzi Simmons and Heinz each had three points. Cordes led the Jimmies with 16 points and three assists. Lofstrom added 12 points off the bench. Wiest scored nine points and contributed three assists. Paulsen had eight points and four rebounds. Busek registered seven points and six rebounds. Megan Oswald collected seven rebounds and three assists. Dakota State was 35.3 percent from the field (18-of-51 field goals) and 9-of-26 3-pointers. Jamestown shot 40 percent (24-of-60 field goals) and 10-of-27 from the 3-point line. The Trojans made 20 free throws in 25 attempts (80 percent). The Jimmies were 1-of-4 free throws.
