Women's March Madness perfect bracket: ESPN user was one game short of perfection

Women's March Madness perfect bracket: ESPN user was one game short of perfection Show Caption Hide Caption Women's National Championship recap USA TODAY's Meghan Hall breaks down UConn's win over South Carolina in the NCAA National Championship. Sports Seriously With the entire women's NCAA Tournament in the books and UConn cutting down the nets, the hope of having a perfect bracket for one lucky fan will have to wait another season. However, the drought almost came to an end this year. According to ESPN, one user in its Women's Bracket Challenge came one game short of beating the impossibly long odds of predicting all 63 games of the March Madness tournament perfectly in their bracket. REQUIRED READING: Women's March Madness winners, losers: UConn, Paige Bueckers earn storybook ending The only incorrect game in that user's bracket came in the first round of the tournament, as they had No. 8 seed Utah advancing to the second round to play then-defending champion and No. 1 seed South Carolina. The Utes, of course, were "upset" by No. 9 seed Indiana in that first-round game thanks to a dominating 27-16 third-quarter performance. Notable picks from the user included two 7-10 upsets in the first round, as No. 10 seeds South Dakota State and Oregon beat No. 7 seeds Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt, respectively. The user also got a close call in the second between No. 4 seed Maryland and No. 5 seed Alabama, with the Terrapins needing to overcome a 17-point deficit to beat the Crimson Tide in double overtime. ESPN also noted that one user started an impressive 57-0 on their bracket, which was the longest perfect streak in the history of the tournament. In Sunday's national championship game, UConn rolled through South Carolina for the second time this season for their 12th women's NCAA Tournament national title under Geno Auriemma. It also put a fitting touch on an illustrious career for Huskies star guard Paige Bueckers, who is the likely candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft. Of the 3.4 million brackets in ESPN's Women's Tournament Challenge, 20.4% of brackets had the Huskies cutting down the nets in Tampa at Amalie Arena. There was also one user on CBS Sports' bracket challenge that came one win shy of a perfect bracket, per the Associated Press. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Notre Dame fencer takes gold

Notre Dame fencer takes gold Chase Emmer spearheads a strong day for Notre Dame men Notre Dame fencer Chase Emmer has won his first individual championship. Emmer won the men's foil on Friday, giving the Fighting Irish an individual national title in eight straight NCAA championships going back to 2017. Notre Dame extended its lead in the men's competition to 10 points over Columbia/Barnard and 11 over St. John's. The Fighting Irish had 87 points after the second -- and final -- day for men's competition. Notre Dame fencing now has 46 individual titles, 22 for the men. There have been 10 NCAA individual foil titles for the Irish men. Emmer was 17-6 in round-robin competition, which earned him the No. 2 seed for the knockout round. Teammate Ziyaun Chen also went 17-6 in the round-robin and he was the No. 3 seed for the knockout round. This meant Chen had to face Hemmer. Hemmer won 15-11 to advance to face Harvard's Andrew Chen. Hemmer won 15-10. Radu Nitu won the silver medal in sabre for Notre Dame, while Ahmed Hesham tied for third. Notre Dame fans spread powerful, uplifting message during tournament tilt

Notre Dame fans spread powerful, uplifting message during tournament tilt Fighting Irish fans remind us how much women's sports are growing and how popular they are. Notre Dame fans had a powerful message for viewers at home during the Fighting Irish's 106-54 win over Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Irish fans seated behind the band at Purcell Pavillion wore green t-shirts, each with a letter on it. When all the students were together, the combination of the shirts spelled out this message: "Everybody Watches Women's Sports." Talk about taking the phrase "student body" literally. OK, technically it's what the fans were wearing on their body, but you get my meaning. Women's basketball is certainly growing in popularity, and these fans recognize that.
