Inaugural $100,000 Meraki prize for women artists awarded to Sarah Sze
Sze's work often weaves together elements of painting, sculpture, and video into outsized installations held together with wire, string, and slim wooden armatures. Always on the edge of chaos, its precarious nature both beguiles and unsettles as a reflection on the instability of the modern world and the random accretion of memory across the slippage of time. Sze's work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Guggenheim Museum, and The Tate Modern, among others. Advertisement Demoulas, a long-time supporter of the ICA, has been a member of the museum's board since 2009; the prize, and the gift of artworks, is a culmination of that longstanding relationship, an ICA spokesperson said. Sze, a professor of visual arts at Columbia University and former MacArthur fellow, will accept the award at the ICA's annual Women's Luncheon on May 5. Murray Whyte can be reached at

Hundreds knocked down pins at Annual Rock ‘n' Radio Bowl
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — First responders dealing with serious health issues are getting help from the community. Hundreds knocked down pins on Sunday at Chackos Family Bowling Center in Wilkes-Barre at the Third Annual Rock 'n' Radio Bowl. The fundraising event is hosted by Cumulus Media, which owns hundreds of radio stations, including WMGS Magic 93 and WBHT HOT 97.1. Part of the proceeds benefit Foundation 58, a Hazleton-based charity that helps firefighters, police, and emergency medical personnel affected by cancer. 28/22 Meterologist Valerie Smock speaks at Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick Women's Luncheon 'Our first responders do so much for the community at all times so to have them, to have the opportunity to say thank you in a way that's not just thank you with words and to do something that shows financially maybe to help those that need it it tugs the heartstrings I think,' said Cumulus Media Promotions Director Kara Hart. 'It's heartfelt. It's heartfelt to see people come out and support and benefit things like this and give back, and to charity. It's all love,' Retired Chief Paramedic with the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department Michael Stadulis explained. Mackay discusses running career at BU luncheon
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton University alumna and Endicott native Emily Mackay received a hero's welcome today at her alma mater. Mackay, who competed in the 1500-meter race at last summer's Paris Olympics, was the guest speaker at BU's 20th annual Celebrating Women in Athletics Luncheon. Mackay was an accomplished runner at Union-Endicott High School before receiving a scholarship to attend Oregon State. But after a freshman year filled with injuries and homesickness, she decided to return to Endicott, transfer to BU and join the cross-country team as a walk-on. During her speech, Mackay talked about how it took some time to regain her passion for running and connect with her new teammates who lived together on or off campus while she was living at home. She credits her BU coach Annette Acuff for helping her to believe that she could be a professional athlete as well as words of inspiration from the 2019 luncheon featuring legendary marathon runner Joan Benoit. 'That was right around the time when I started taking running more seriously. Listening to her speak at the Women's Luncheon was very inspiring to me. That's honestly almost part of the beginning of my story, listening to Joan Benoit speak here at Binghamton University,' said Mackay. A new award for community engagement was presented to Kim Myers of Vestal for her creation of the program 'Coaching Her Future,' an initiative aimed at training coaches on the different needs of female athletes. Mackay currently lives in Boston where she is training for the World Championships in September with the ultimate goal of qualifying for and medaling at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. On Tuesday, Mackay will visit her elementary and high school in the U-E School District.
