Omer's roadmap for Grange
Omer Mahmud Khan has taken over as coach of the Grange women's cricket team knowing he doesn't need to look far to find role models for his charges. Two recent Grange players, Lucy Weston and Ellen Watson, are now playing for Leicestershire Foxes in the women's one day league in England. Omer says it is his goal to provide opportunities for others to follow in their footsteps while also targeting success in the fledgling Scottish Women's Premiership and national knock out cup which begins on a twenty:20 format in July. One of the most recognisable figures in East cricket – Omer played with Drummond Trinity from 2008-2016 before spending the next eight years at Kirkbrae (five as captain alongside three as chairman) he has committed his playing abilities to Boroughmuir this season as it one of the clubs most convenient for him – he says: 'I just completed my level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications with Cricket Scotland when the role at Grange came up. 'There is tremendous potential with around 50 females involved including teams for under-14 and under-16s. 'Some have been playing at Grange since aged four or five and it is such a great venue with a road map for players to follow the likes of Lucy and Ellen. 'With older players availability can be sporadic due to university commitments so my arrival while running the 12 week long Edinburgh Hub for a select group of under-16 boys under the MCC Foundation scheme is a good time to launch a recruitment drive at Grange. 'What we don't want to do is promote under-16's into the seniors just to be number fillers which can be discouraging. We need the up and comings to earn their places. 'Part of the overall challenge is improving awareness of the Women's Premier League but hopefully we play our part alongside Cricket Scotland's growth plan.' One of England's most decorated cricketers, Stuart Broad, is coming to Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms on 26 October as part of a UK wide tour. Stuart's roadshow will see him reflect on a career which yielded more than 600 Test wickets as well as a T20 World Cup and Ashes success. Sciver-Brunt unlikely to bowl this summer
England head coach Charlotte Edwards has confirmed that captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is unlikely to bowl this summer. All-rounder Sciver-Brunt, 32, has been recovering from a long-standing Achilles problem which worsened during England's thrashing by Australia in the Women's Ashes at the start of the year. Advertisement She subsequently played a starring role in Mumbai Indians' Women's Premier League win but had a long period of rehabilitation afterwards, which coincided with her maternity leave. Sciver-Brunt was appointed England captain last month, shortly after her wife, former England bowler Katherine, gave birth to their son in March. "I feel these games are really big for us," Edwards told Sky Sports after England started her and Sciver-Brunt's reign with a comprehensive T20 series clean sweep against West Indies. "We've got nine games before the World Cup starts, so a lot of this is about us getting the right balance of team. Advertisement "Nat's not bowling this series and she's probably not going to bowl most of the summer. We want to make sure she's fit and firing for the World Cup. "Her workloads will start in a few weeks. It gives her an opportunity to look at other options, so we know we've got that balance if and when Nat comes back." England face West Indies in three one-day internationals starting at Derby on Friday. Batter Alice Capsey has been added to the squad as cover for former captain Heather Knight, who suffered a hamstring injury during England's win in the third T20. Knight's participation in the rest of the series will be confirmed after she has a scan on Tuesday. Advertisement Fast bowler Lauren Filer also joins the squad, having fully recovered from a knee injury. The West Indies series is followed by a T20 and an ODI series against India across June and July, but Edwards and Sciver-Brunt's first major assignment comes in the autumn, with India hosting the 50-over World Cup. Edwards also praised the new or returning faces in England's T20 squad, including seamers Em Arlott - who made her international debut in the first match at Canterbury and ended the series with six wickets - and Issy Wong, who had been out of the side for a couple of years after a dip in form. Sophie Ecclestone, the world's number one-ranked bowler, was left out of the side to regain fitness after a knee issue but her fellow left-arm spinner Linsey Smith also performed well, taking three wickets at a miserly economy of 4.83 across the three matches. Advertisement "With Em Arlott, we've all seen her in domestic cricket and how good she's been but to come here and look at ease in international cricket in her first few games is really pleasing," added Edwards. "And Linsey Smith is a proven performer and probably unlucky to be around at the same time as Sophie Ecclestone. She's taken her opportunity with both hands and that's all you can do. "And Lauren Bell was unbelievable today, you can see the competition forming. It's an exciting time. "Mahika Gaur and Kate Cross are coming back into the ODI team. We've suddenly got this battery of fast bowlers forming which is going to give me a few headaches, but good headaches."

New mum Sciver-Brunt was set to miss Windies series
England's Nat Sciver-Brunt was set to miss the ongoing West Indies series on maternity leave before being made captain, says her wife Katherine. Sciver-Brunt, 32, was named captain in April, a month after her son, Theo, who was carried by former England bowler Katherine, was born. Advertisement "Nat was entitled to four months' maternity leave, not being the birth mother," Katherine Sciver-Brunt told BBC Test Match Special. "She took three weeks of that because England wanted her back for this series. "That was a huge sacrifice because those first eight weeks are so hard. "No-one would usually go back after three weeks, and Nat was pre-arranged to not play in this tournament and come back for the India series [which starts on 28 June]." Theo was with Sciver-Brunt during the T20 series which concluded on Monday and the first one-day international on Friday in Derby, where Katherine was working as a commentator for the BBC. Advertisement The matches were England's first under the all-rounder and new coach Charlotte Edwards, who were appointed after Heather Knight and Jon Lewis were sacked amid the fallout from last winter's Ashes defeat. Katherine travelled alongside England while pregnant throughout the winter but remained at home during the Women's Premier League in February and March. Had she gone into labour while Nat was at the tournament in India, her wife would not have made it home in time for the birth. Nat is the first mother to play for England since Arran Brindle, who played her last international in 2014. Advertisement "There were talks of a stand-in captain coming in for this series and that was a hard question for England," Katherine Sciver-Brunt said. "But ultimately Lottie [Edwards] wanted Nat and I couldn't deny her that opportunity towards the back end of her career. "If I was unhappy or wasn't sure, Nat would not have done it. She is selfless in that way and that is why she makes such a good captain." Sciver-Brunt's comments come after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced an update to its maternity policy on Friday. Previously England players were guaranteed their full salary for the first 13 weeks post-childbirth and a percentage thereafter but they will now receive 12 months' fully paid leave, plus an automatic contract extension and support with childcare and breastfeeding facilities. Advertisement County players will get six months' paid maternity leave plus the contract extension. Nat had egg freezing treatment last summer and said she would like to carry a baby after her cricket career. "When you talk about giving birth, it takes more than a year to get your body back into fitness and revert back to what you were," Katherine said. "You have worked so hard as a female to get to that point in your career and then you have to question stepping back and having to juggle starting a family. "Even deciding to extract and freeze your eggs, there is time that has to be taken out for that. Advertisement "If you are an exceptional athlete you often have a long career ahead of you, but not if you want to start a family. "Normalising this conversation and to inspiring people that it can be done, there needs to be more of that and I think it will happen."

Ratnagiri Jets, the two-time champions of the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL), have announced the appointment of Devieka Palshikaar as the Lead Performance Coach for both the men's and women's teams ahead of the eagerly awaited season. Ranjit Pande will continue in his role as Head Coach for both squads. Season 3 of the Maharashtra Premier League kicks off on June 4, 2025, with the men's team beginning their title defence against Eagle Nashik Titans. The inaugural edition of the Women's Maharashtra Premier League (WMPL) will run from June 5 to 14, where Ratnagiri Jets will open their campaign against Raigad Royals. A former India international, Devieka Palshikaar, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the franchise. Her coaching career includes impactful stints as Batting Coach of the Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League and Head Coach of the Kerala Senior Women's Team, where she played a pivotal role in grooming some of India's emerging women cricketers. In her new role, Devieka will work closely with Head Coach Ranjit Pande on strategic planning, performance development, and match preparation. Her dual responsibility across both MPL and WMPL squads aims to ensure seamless integration of coaching philosophy and training excellence throughout the franchise. 'With all that has happened with Virat Kohli…': Former CSK veteran says there's no way RCB are not winning IPL 2025
It has taken a lot of effort to get here, but the Royal Challengers Bengaluru stand two steps away from what's been expected of them for years – to win the IPL. It's been 18 long years, but the Red and Gold have been unable to go the distance. Their best show came in 2016, when led by Virat Kohli's staggering tally of 973 runs, RCB reached the final, only to go down to the Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs. They have finished with the wooden spoon but have also made the Playoffs on a few occasions since, but a trophy finish has eluded RCB. Will the wait finally end this time? Shane Watson's answer is a definite YES. In fact, the former Chennai Super Kings IPL-winning all-rounder predicts Kohli to be the Player of the Match, as he placed his bets on one of his former franchises to lift the coveted IPL for the first time in 18 years. "The winner of IPL 2025, and I've been thinking long and hard about it, is RCB. And the Man of the Match for me is Virat Kohli, the great man. And here's the reason why. I just get a feeling that this is the time for RCB. They have had a few blips in the back end of the tournament, but with Josh Hazlewood coming back for the Playoffs, I get a feeling this is the year," Watson said on his X handle. Watson reckons the stars are aligning for RCB to finally enjoy their moment under the sun. Last year, the RCB women ended the franchise's trophy cabinet by landing the Women's Premier League title, and although the boys fell short, losing the Eliminator to the Rajasthan Royals, this is one of their best seasons ever. And for multiple reasons to. A. Kohli has dominated the batting charts again, having pummelled 602 runs, including eight half-centuries. B. RCB have won all their away matches this season, making them the first team ever to do so. And C. The return of Josh Hazlewood makes them an even more threatening bowling unit. Given the way things are shaping up, Watson affirms there's no way RCB are not winning the IPL this year. "With everything that's happened with Virat Kohli, announcing his retirement from Test cricket – amazing Test career that he had – I just think things are coming back up together. They are going to have to because Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians are going to be so hard to beat. I just feel MI are going to be the team RCB are going to have to play incredibly well against. They haven't got any weaknesses at all. Still, I think it's going to be RCB's time. No. 18… we all know what that means. I think Kohli is going to be the man to finally get RCB to win their first IPL trophy," added Watson.
