RTE Super Garden contestant backs himself to win despite judge's harsh comment

A young garden designer is confident he will win RTÉ's competition show Super Garden, despite some harsh comments from the judges. Chris Walsh, from Wicklow, was the fourth budding designer featured on the series on Tuesday night. The 32-year-old transformed Aline and Marcelo's bland and overgrown back garden into a 'culinary canopy' where the Brazilian couple can entertain their family and friends. A beautiful wooden canopy is the centre of the garden, featuring a BBQ and sage green dining table and chairs. As Marcelo is a chef, a BBQ area was at the top of his request list. A stoned path connects the house and the canopy area, as gorgeous colourful plants line the perimeters. Judges Brian Burke, representing Woodies, Carol Marks from Bord Bia and former Super Garden winner Monica Alvarez praised Chris for listening to the homeowners wishes. They said he produced a low-maintenance garden like they asked for, as most plants only need to be touched once a year. However, Brian was disappointed that Chris' garden didn't show off his ecological background better. The Wicklow man studied wildlife biology in IT Tralee and worked in environmental consultancy before taking the plunge to pursue his dream as a garden designer. Speaking after inspecting the garden, Brian said: 'The water feature is a pre-packaged item, it doesn't really scream someone with an ecological background. For someone with Chris' background there was an opportunity to do a little bit more.' This comment didn't dampen Chris' spirits, however, as he believes he still has a chance of winning the show. Out of five contestants, the winner will receive a prize that every garden designer dreams of- having their creation showcased at Bord Bia's Bloom later this year. Chris said: 'I have brought a stunning garden here, the home owners are blown away by it. It's top notch, that's why I feel I deserve to win it. I think I'm going to bloom, I hope I'm going to bloom." Judge Monica questioned what the 'wow factor' of the young man's garden was. Feeling proud of his creation, Chris said: 'I feel the wow factor has really come into its own with the planting. "I have a floating timber shelf that has its own story. It was hit by lightning in a convent in Wexford and is over 200 years old. That ties in with the BBQ and other features are a granite boulder at the water feature that will allow frogs and other animals to come in and use the water feature and be able to leave it again.' Chris hopes he has done enough to take the crown, as his garden would be seen by over 100,000 visitors at Bloom, Ireland's largest garden showcase. As part of RTÉ's Super Garden series, each designer is given €15,000 and three weeks to complete their masterpiece. This year, every contestant was paired with a homeowner who recently purchased a house built by Glenveagh Homes in Baker Hall, Navan, Co Meath. They are each given a similar-sized garden to create their designs, working alongside each other in the new housing development. The fifth and final episode of Super Garden airs on RTÉ One next Tuesday at 7pm.

Woodies DIY owner hails ‘very strong' start to Irish trading year

Grafton, the building and DIY materials group behind the Woodies and Chadwicks brand, said favourable weather conditions and a recovery in activity after Storm Eowyn contributed to a 'very strong' start to its trading year in Ireland against a backdrop of 'subdued' demand in the UK. In a trading update issued ahead of its annual general meeting on Thursday, Grafton said its overall performance had been in line with expectations in the first four months of the year. Group revenues over the period between January and the end of April were £773.1 million, up 7.8 per cent from last year. The figures were boosted by Grafton's acquisition of Spanish air conditioning and heating products distributor Salvador Escoda late last year. Daily like-for-like revenue for the period was 2.7 per cent higher than in the same period last year, the group said. READ MORE 'In Ireland, Chadwicks delivered like-for-like revenue growth of 3.5 per cent in the period as trading activity recovered strongly from the impact of Storm Éowyn,' Grafton said. Overall, it said the outlook for construction in the Republic was 'remains positive' with 'strong support and policy continuity' from the Government. In its Woodies Irish retail division, Grafton said the Republic had a 'very strong start to the year', buttressed by 'strong consumer spending', particularly on plants and garden-related products. Daily like-for-like revenues across the group's distribution division in the UK, however, continued to decline, Grafton said. Demand remains 'subdued', particularly in the greater London area, it said, but said the outlook remains positive with the Labour Party government pledging to increase housing activity. Overall, Grafton said its performance was in line with expectations during what is typically a quieter part of its financial year. With the 'more material' summer trading period ahead, 'we remain on track to meet full-year expectations', the group said, 'notwithstanding the potential impact of US tariffs'. Eric Born, chief executive of Grafton Group, said he is pleased with the performance after a 'relatively subdued' start to the year. 'We are focused on what we can influence within our businesses rather than being unduly distracted by the uncertainties around us,' he said.

Boozy bank holiday revellers kick off three-day weekend by donning fancy dress for famous pub crawl

TIPSY bank holiday revellers have already kicked off the three-day weekend by dressing up for a notorious pub crawl. Hundreds have swarmed Leeds with feather boas and elaborate costumes for the Otley Run. 10 10 10 10 Dedicated boozers dressed up as traffic cones, Santas and even Doctor Who characters. Drunk revellers were snapped clinging onto one another for support as they went from pub to pub. One pack of friends dressed up as dalmatians, with the girls donning black and white spotted skirts. Two male friends beamed at the camera while brandishing baseball bats dressed up as comic book character Harley Quinn. Other notable characters were spotted such as Batman, Spiderman, and the entire Star Wars crew. Dobby the Elf from Harry Potter also featured in a group picture that spans multiple franchises. The two-and-a-half mile pub crawl winds its way through a vomit-inducing 17 venues down Otley Road. Punters typically knock back a drink in each establishment, with most totally legless halfway into the challenge. Participants begin at Woodies before swilling snifters at 15 other watering holes during the challenge, which takes place several times a year. Drinkers sup a final brew at the aptly named Dry Dock - a narrow boat-turned-pub. But those who were hoping for the scorching hot weather to last for thr holiday will be sorely disappointed. The UK is set for a cool bank holiday with below average temperatures after record-breaking warm weather this week. Temperatures are expected to fall from highs of 22C in southern England on Saturday down to 16C on Sunday and 15C on Monday, the early May bank holiday. This comes after the UK saw its warmest start to May on record, with highs of 29.3C in Kew Gardens, south-west London, on Thursday. Provisional Met Office figures also showed the country recorded its brightest April since records began in 1910, with England seeing its sunniest ever, and the other home nations their second sunniest. According to the Met Office, the bank holiday will be 'on the cool side, exacerbated by the ongoing wind in the east and south'. Jonathan Vautrey, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'Northerly winds are going to be driving in those much cooler and fresher conditions across all areas of the UK. 'That northerly wind is coming down from the North Sea, it's going to be filtering in a reasonable amount of clouds across eastern coastal areas, both Scotland and England. So here, temperature is going to be held back quite a bit. 'When you add on the strength of that wind as well, it is going to be much cooler and much chillier compared to recent days.' While south-east England is expecting somewhat mild temperatures of between 14C and 15C, temperatures in north-west England are expected to fall to 13C and the north east is set for a chillier 11C. 'Tomorrow temperatures will be around the typical average values for this time of year', he continued. 'Into Sunday and Monday, we're actually going to see them dropping slightly below average, again, primarily across the eastern half of the UK.' 10 10 10 10 10
