Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony allows those in Summers County a chance to reflect on the cost of freedom

HINTON, WV (WVNS) – The local community and veterans gathered at the Summers County Memorial Building to pay their respects to deceased service men and women. After years of collaboration, Summers County close to completing first dog kennel This Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony featured speakers like West Virginia District 10 State Senator Jack Woodrum and West Virginia District 040 Delegate Roy Cooper, who is also a veteran. Senator Woodrum said he is fortunate enough to have known very involved veterans that are now passed like World War I veterans and Curt Messer, who used to speak at Memorial Day and Veteran's Day ceremonies in Summers County. 'Summers County and West Virginia has a very high rate of military enlistment. Most of the conflicts that our country has been engaged in, people in West Virginia have been very involved in those conflicts. So, being able to recognize that, to teach the younger generations about service, about what it means to be an American – those are very important things to me and to the people that show up for this event. Almost everybody here has lost family members or friends in combat. It is important for us to be able to come out and remember them and think about them,' said Senator Woodrum. One theme each speaker kept coming back to was the fact that Memorial Day is not necessarily a celebration. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices that were made to keep the United States of America a free country. Veterans who are still living were also honored at this event for their service. 'The country cannot forget those who allowed the country to be free and safe for them. So any time that anybody in any community is able to come around and show their gratitude, it means a lot to the veterans. I think it means a lot to the country, too, that they come to realize and pass on to [the next] generations just exactly what it took to make us free and stable in a pretty contentious world,' said Robert Bennett, a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. Summit Christian Academy joins the WVSSAC Bennett is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4500. He said if others would like to join on learn more information, they can show up to the Veteran's Memorial Museum of Southern West Virginia in Hinton. Bennett explained that folks should speak with Tim Wheeler there for more information. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Quincy man guilty of 1st degree murder, killing Dorchester man in 2019 shooting

A Quincy man was found guilty of fatally shooting a Dorchester man in June 2019, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office said. Lalance Smith, 35, was also found guilty of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony, possession of ammunition and possession of a loaded firearm. Another person involved in the incident that ended in the death of Arnold Woodrum, 59, of Dorchester, named Kiniya Lee, 40, was sentenced to four to six years in state prison after a guilty plea. At around 3 a.m. on June 14, 2019, Lee called Woodrum to tell him that she was coming over to his apartment at 107 Devon St., Hayden's office said. Woodrum asked someone to let Lee and Smith inside. Woodrum did not know Smith. After they were let inside, Lee went into Woodrum's room and said 'I'm sorry' several times, the statement read. Smith followed Lee into the room, pointed a silver revolver at Woodrum. 'What's up, give me the bag, give me the money, give me something,' Woodrum said before he handed Smith a bag and said, 'take it, take it.' Then there was a struggle and several shots were heard, Hayden's office said. Woodrum then ran down the hall into a bathroom and collapsed. He was shot in his chest and back. 'After examining all the evidence and listening to all the testimony the jury came back with a decision that we think is proper and justified,' Hayden said in the statement. 'I thank the jurors for their work, and I'm grateful for the efforts by prosecutors, investigators and victim-witness advocates to secure a measure of justice for the family and friends of Arnold Woodrum.' 3 lanes of Kennedy Bridge closed for repairs to fully reopen by Friday. What we know

Three lanes on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge are set to reopen by Friday following temporary repairs to damaged parts, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a statement. Lanes will reopen gradually ahead of the Friday rush hour, KYTC spokesperson Morgan Woodrum said. While the leftmost lane will remain closed, the two lanes to the right are expected to be open from Tuesday until Friday. Crews will then shift the closure to the left two lanes temporarily Friday while construction equipment is removed. After this is complete, all three lanes will reopen. The long-term project to remove and replace expansion joints on the bridge is expected to restart with intermittent lane closures in July once new permanent parts arrive. Crews contracted with KYTC will then work at the bridge, which carries southbound Interstate 65 traffic from Jeffersonville to Louisville, until at least April 2026. Expansion joints, the parts on the bridge scheduled to be replaced over the next year, are meant to prevent concrete supporting the travel surface from cracking. The joints can expand and contract as temperatures rise and fall. Additional information about future lane closures will be made available as the project progresses, Woodrum said. 2 I-64 bridges to be replaced in Louisville this year. What to know about traffic patterns

A pair of Interstate 64 bridges in Louisville are set to be demolished and reconstructed starting this summer, and drivers can expect several changes in traffic patterns through the fall. In a statement, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Morgan Woodrum said preliminary work on the project has already begun, but the demolition of two bridges over the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek — westbound I-64 near Cannons Lane and eastbound I-64 near the Watterson Expressway exchange — won't start until mid-May at the earliest. The project includes multiple phases, and lane closures and shifts will be in place throughout the timeline, Woodrum said. Crews will start work on the shoulder, leaving drivers with two 11-foot lanes in each direction. Crews will then move their work to the median, and traffic heading both east and westbound will be shifted to the outside shoulder. After work in the median is complete, all eastbound traffic will remain in the outside shoulder, while westbound traffic is moved to the median between Breckenridge and Browns lanes to accommodate the removal and replacement of the westbound bridge, Woodrum said. The process to replace the bridge is expected to be complete by July. The final phase of the project is the demolition and construction of the eastbound bridge, which could be done by this fall. While the eastbound bridge is being replaced, eastbound traffic will be shifted to the new westbound bridge and median Breckenridge and Browns lanes, Woodrum said. KYTC awarded a $6.6 million contract for the project to Jeffersonville, Indiana-based E&B Paving. Updates on traffic changes will be shared on KYTC's weekly Roadshow report.
