Walkers and Mars reveal why beloved snacks get discontinued
Discontinued snack items are a popular topic in the UK, with many disappearing and being brought back to supermarket shelves over the years. This can cause frustration for some shoppers who see fan-favourite items get removed, and it might cause them to wonder why it happens. A couple of insiders at Walkers and Mars have revealed the process for why the companies discontinue certain snacks. Plus, they have shared some details on what customers can do if they want a removed item brought back to the supermarkets. Why do companies like Mars and Walkers discontinue snacks? Sometimes, the reason a snack gets discontinued is as simple as there being limited shelf space in supermarkets. Steph Herbert, head of marketing at Walkers, has shared some insight with The Sun on this topic. They explained: "The reality is that within shops and the customers that we work with, they only hold a certain number of products on their shelves at any one time." That means that when a new flavour is brought in, often something else might have to go. "We know that our fans' taste buds are always evolving, so we opt to make changes to our line-up and we'll maybe swap one flavour in for another flavour," Steph continued. Lizzy Dinsdale, principal chocolate scientist at Mars, says that not only do brands look at what's popular right now, but they'll also be trying to predict what customers will want to eat in five and even 10 years' time. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Walkers Crisps (@walkers_crisps) Why do discontinued snacks get brought back? Companies often take a look at customer response to items being discontinued to see if it is worth bringing back. For example, Mars brought back its Crispy Rolls after they were removed from shelves in 2022. This came after an online petition to bring the product back hit over 8,000 signatures. Lizzy said: "I think that's the most demand for a product I've seen in a while!" For Walkers, their most popular recent relaunch has been the iconic Worcester Sauce crisp. Steph admitted crisp fans "feel very attached to Worcester Sauce" and the flavour has a "real loyal fan base". That's why this year the flavour landed back on shelves - this time as part of a collaboration with Lea & Perrins Worcester Sauce. What can shoppers do to bring back a discontinued snack? The good news for shoppers is that they can get fan-favourite snacks brought back if enough people express an interest. Lizzy shared: "At Mars, bringing back an old favourite is all about listening to our consumers. "When we see a clear desire from people for a certain product to return, whether on social media or via a petition, we take note. Recommended reading: "We get hundreds of requests from customers asking us to bring back their favourite products, and listening to consumer feedback is key for us." Meanwhile, Steph says Walkers is contacted "more than you'd probably think" about bringing back old flavours, and every comment from fans gets read by the team. "In the last two years, we've had requests to bring back over 60 different types of flavours of Walkers," she says.

I tried Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps and now understand what the fuss is about
Back in 2022 Walkers discontinued it's popular Worcester Sauce crisps causing an entire country to cry out in unison. "Hang on.....@walkers_crisps have discontinued Worcester Sauce flavour?!?!?!? This is outrageous, we need to petition to bring these back immediately," one fan said on X (formerly Twitter) at the time. Another person added: "What the hell @walkers_crisps Worcester Sauce was the best flavour crisps that you did! You need to bring them back asap!!!!" A third person commented: "Errrrr what?!!! Walkers have discontinued making the Worcester Sauce flavour crisps. This is a crime!" Hang on..... @walkers_crisps have discontinued Worcester Sauce flavour?!?!?!? This is outrageous, we need to petition to bring these back immediately. — Steve Dorsett (@SteveDorsett) October 6, 2023 But the same group of people, that just years before had been left heartbroken, rejoiced upon news Walkers was bringing back Worcester Sauce crisps to the UK. At first, the "little purple bags of joy" were only available at Charlie's Convenience Store in Worcester. Now Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps are set to land on shelves at retailers across the country on Monday (March 17). I never understood the unconditional love some people showed towards these previously discontinued crisps, until now. Having grown up in Australia, I never had the opportunity to try Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps. So when I finally managed to get my hands on a packet I was intrigued to see what all the fuss was about. I now completely understand why people queued up in Worcester and have been spending ridiculous amounts on eBay to get their hands on a packet of these delicious crisps. I'll be honest, I'm on the fence when it comes to Worcester Sauce in general, so I went into this taste test fully expecting not to like these crisps. How wrong I was. From the moment I took my first bite I was hooked. That slightly tangy, but not overpowering flavour was delicious. I was transported back to eating crisps as a child in Australia, many years ago, as they reminded me of Smith's Lightly Tangy chips (or crisps if you're in the UK). After trying Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps for the first time I am now completely hooked. (Image: Patrick Glover) So now I am left wanting more. I have one packet left in my kitchen which I dare not eat, as I want to savour it, just in case I am unable to get another packet. RECOMMENDED READING: Walkers confirms this popular flavour of crisps has been discontinued Who has the best crisps? I tested Walkers and supermarket brands to find out I went looking for discontinued chocolates still on sale in UK - here's what I found But it also leaves me wondering, along with thousands of fellow crisp-lovers across the UK, why Walkers discontinued the popular crisps in the first place. They truly are Walkers' best crisp flavour and I'm glad I have only just discovered their deliciousness, otherwise I'm not sure how I would have coped these past few years. So I now issue a plea to Walkers - please never take away Worcester Sauce crisps again. Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps will be available in retailers across the UK from Monday, March 17.

Aldi shoppers 'drooling' as new crisp flavour 'finally' spotted on shelves
Crisp fans are buzzing after spotting a popular flavour of crisps on Aldi's shelves for the first time – and are now rushing to get their hands on a bag. Viral snack brand Takis has brought its blue rolled tortilla chips to the UK to tap into shoppers' "continued demand for spicy snacks." The Blue Heat Takis, which is the second top-selling flavour in the US, are described as "an explosive combination of chilli and lime flavours". Fans are buzzing after the treats are rolling out into UK stores - joining the UK's existing Takis' line-up including Fuego, Dragon Sweet Chilli and Fuego. They have already been launched in Co-Op and Morrisons will join the stock list next month, from April 2. The 55g bag, priced at £1.25 will be available in convenience stores this month as well. Recently, the crisps landed at Aldi, setting customers back £2.99 for a large bag. Sharing the news on Instagram, Aldi said: "You asked, we delivered! Takis Blue Heat have landed in Aldi for £2.99! Who's ready to turn up the heat?" READ MORE: Man spends £14 in Costco to try viral Dubai chocolate – and issues brutal verdict Fans rushed to comment on the announcement, as one said: "Yes, finally." Another added: "Picked some up yesterday just had to get my hands on these!" "What a beautiful time to be alive," said another. "Oh yes," said another. "OMG," said another. One other said they were "drooling". Some people warned that the treats are not for the faint hearted; they are very hot. One individual warned: "Extreme Takis should come with a warning from the chief medical officer." In other crisp news, Walkers issued an apology this week after crisp enthusiasts were left upset because of the limited availability of a returning favourite flavour. Walkers have now announced Worcester Sauce crisps will be making a comeback. But when it emerged that the sought-after flavour was only available in Worcestershire, fans took to social media again, insisting on a nationwide release – with some even claiming they had travelled to the county to get their hands on a bag. Walkers have now issued an apology for the limited availability of the crisps and has decided to make the Worcester Sauce flavour crisps available to purchase across the whole of the UK.
