Burghill, Tillington and Weobley suffer first league defeat

BURGHILL, Tillington and Weobley suffered their first defeat of their Worcestershire County League Division One campaign as they were beaten by 125 runs at Droitwich Spa.
Winning the toss and bowling, the Burgs were always on the back foot. Openers Harry Butler (55) and Martyn Davis (37) saw off the shine on the new ball. This made life easier for the top and middle order.
There was one short period when the game looked like it could turn the way of the Herefordshire visitors.
Afaq Khalid snapped up three quick wickets to take the score from 153-2 to 154-5. But Lincoln Kellett, with a run-a-ball 75, took the game away from the visitors as Droitwich Spa finished on 273-8 off their 50 overs.
Afaq Khalid (3-40) off 10 overs, was Burghill's best bowler, while John Lewis (1-32 off 10 overs) and Ranjit William (1-48 off 10 overs) supported him well.
Burghill will be looking for improvement after bowling 30 wides and four no balls.
In reply, Sam Smith with 7-46 ripped the heart out of the visitor's top and middle order.
They faced a challenging start at 34-6 before a spirited defence by Sabil Sarmad (52) and Ranjit William (29), and a breezy 19 from Afaq Khalid helped take the score to a respectable 148 all out in 39.3 overs.
Meanwhile, Burghill, Tillington and Weobley seconds overcame Hanley Castle & Upton firsts by 45 runs, in a match where 600 runs were scored in 90 overs between the sides.
Electing to bat the Herefordshire hosts set a huge target of 328-9 off their allotted 45 overs.
Opener Jasper Darke top scored with 58 as the hosts raced to 248-4. In response Hanley Castle & Upton were bowled out for 283.
