Mass. nursing home with 130-year history to close, lay off staff

A Lawrence nursing home that opened in 1895 will close at the end of the summer, leaving 43 employees without jobs and more than 30 residents without housing. The Berkeley Retirement Home posted a notice on its website announcing the decision to close, writing that it had notified the state Department of Public Health that the facility would shut its doors for good on Aug. 31. In the letter from The Berkeley to DPH posted on the state website, Leslie Russo, the facility's administrator, wrote that the 'difficult decision' had been made due to financial factors, as it had been incurring 'significant monthly losses' and the building itself is aging and needs 'extensive renovations and repairs.' 'This decision was not made lightly and every effort was made over the last few years to identify a long-term solution to ensure the best future for the facility,' Russo wrote. According to the letter, The Berkeley's board of directors voted on April 28 to close the nursing home, which has 19 skilled nursing beds and 25 independent living rest home beds. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act notice posted on the state website shows that 43 workers will be laid off on Aug. 31 when the facility closes. According to a draft closure plan submitted to DPH, residents and their families were notified of the closure on April 30 and a freeze has been placed on new admissions. Staff will work with each resident to find a new placement in a different facility in the area. Medical records will continue to be stored on-site until the building is sold or repurposed. A virtual public hearing about the closure will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 28. 41-year-old woman dies in pedestrian crash in Framingham More details emerge from hazmat incident at Hayden Corp. on Monday morning Insider anticipates 'craziest' NBA offseason that includes Celtics trades Jaylen Brown's knee injury another unknown to Boston Celtics offseason ESPN analyst hopes fans don't 'come for my head' for Drake Maye-Jayden Daniels take Read the original article on MassLive.

Popular chain restaurant lays off 73 in Mass. as it abruptly closes 15 spots nationwide

A chain restaurant abruptly began closing restaurants this past week, including in Massachusetts. And the decision looks like it is leading to significant job loss in the state. A spokesperson for Darden Restaurants, which owns Bahama Breeze, confirmed to USA Today that 15 restaurants across eight states have closed. Among them is a location at 413 Middlesex Road in Tyngsborough, Mass. The company also notified the state through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act (WARN) notice that 73 Bahama Breeze workers in Tyngsborough were laid off on May 15. WARN notices are required to be filed by certain companies that are laying off significant numbers of people. 'We continually evaluate the performance of all our restaurants,' Darden Restaurants spokesperson Kiara Buckner wrote to USA Today. 'Closing a restaurant is a difficult choice because it impacts our team members and guests. However, we believe this is the right decision because it will allow Bahama Breeze to focus on its highest performing restaurants and strengthen the brand's overall performance.' 3989 Plaza Blvd., Gainesville 2088 9th St. N., Naples 1786 W. A McDonald's and a Popeyes are closing in Fresno. One won't reopen

While locally owned mom-and-pop coffee shops and a Mexican restaurant are opening in Fresno, fast-food restaurants aren't having much luck this week. Two chain restaurants are closing. One temporarily and one for good. The Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at First Street and McKinley Avenue near the canal and dd's DISCOUNTS has closed. The restaurant was listed as 'temporarily closed' on the company's website for weeks. But now it is closed for good. One small 'Sorry, we are closed' sign hangs on the door. The seats, menu signs, cash registers and most of the equipment have been removed. It's no longer listed on the website and a real estate company's 'available' sign hangs on the building. Popeyes and the franchisee that owns the location did not return repeated messages seeking comment about why it closed. The owner, California QSR Management, also closed another of its locations in San Diego. In Fresno, Popeyes still has four restaurants open: on Blackstone Avenue, Kings Canyon Road, Cedar Avenue north of Shaw Avenue, and West Shaw Avenue. A busy McDonald's in southeast Fresno is also closing — but not forever. The restaurant at 5645 E. Kings Canyon Road near Clovis Avenue will shut down in June and reopen about two months later in August, according to an employee and a notice filed with the state of California. During that time, the restaurant will remodel, according to a permit application filed with the City of Fresno. The restaurant already has a double drive-thru lane, but will build a new drive-thru window and a bypass lane. It will add a new roof over the trash enclosures, re-stripe the parking lot and make minor changes to the exterior, including adding new doors. Inside the building, it will reconfigure the dining room and kitchen, upgrade the restrooms to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and make other improvements. The closure means 105 employees will be out of work for about two months, according to a notice filed with the state as required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act.
