Dubai's RTA announces upgrade of Al Wasl Road

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an extensive project to upgrade Al Wasl Road, aiming to enhance traffic flow and accommodate the city's growing population. The development, spanning 15km, includes widening the road and constructing new tunnels, with the goal of reducing travel times by 50%. The project will see Al Wasl Road expanded from two to three lanes in each direction, increasing the capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour. RTA director general and chair of the board of executive directors Mattar Al Tayer said: 'Al Wasl Road Development Project forms part of a master plan developed by the RTA to upgrade the road network in the area, which also includes enhancements to Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets. 'These projects are designed with a focus on creative and aesthetic elements, incorporating dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, boulevards, and vibrant urban public spaces that promote community interaction. The plan also features decorative landscaping and the creation of dynamic urban environments. 'The project serves a vital district that offers a broad array of modern tourism and lifestyle destinations, including beaches, luxury hotels, fine dining venues, and residential neighbourhoods, home to over one million residents.' It includes the upgrade of six intersections, as well as the construction of five tunnels totalling 3,850m. The intersection with Al Thanya Street will be improved, and a unidirectional tunnel will be built at the junction with Al Manara Street, designed to handle 4,500 vehicles per hour. Further enhancements include a 750m tunnel on Umm Al Sheif Street, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour, and a 700m tunnel at Umm Amara Street, with a capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour. Additionally, a 625m tunnel will be constructed at Al Orouba Street, and a 750m tunnel at Al Safa Street, each with two lanes and a combined capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour. The Al Wasl Road Development Project is part of a larger master plan by RTA, which includes upgrading Umm Suqeim Street to increase its capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour. This corridor serves over two million residents and will see the construction of bridges and tunnels to improve traffic flow. The project also covers the development of Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, including the construction of an 800m tunnel with four lanes at Al Barsha South. Major intersections along Al Qudra Road will also be upgraded, with bridges totalling 2,700m and an 11.6km street widening, reducing travel time significantly. Trimble launches new software solution to enhance construction cost control

US technology company Trimble has launched its new software solution, Trimble Materials, aimed at enhancing contractors' control over material costs through improved budgeting and inventory tracking. This end-to-end purchasing, inventory, and accounts payable solution is designed to centralise and streamline the entire purchasing and materials management process for contractors. Trimble vice-president and general manager of construction management solutions Lawrence Smith said: "Managing numerous material orders from various suppliers amidst volatile pricing and availability presents significant challenges in the construction sector. "Trimble Materials offers a cohesive solution by connecting material ordering, inventory and accounting, which is especially valuable in the face of potential changes in tariff policy. This digital streamlining empowers contractors to mitigate risks, control costs and gain a competitive edge in an evolving economic landscape." Trimble Materials integrates with Trimble enterprise resource planning solutions, including Viewpoint Spectrum and Viewpoint Vista, to provide connectivity for contractors to develop more efficient estimating, operations, and accounting management ecosystems. The solution complements Trimble's existing construction supply chain workflows, which automate the exchange of material pricing between suppliers and contractors and facilitate ordering from preferred suppliers. With the introduction of Trimble Materials, field users can search for and request materials, view inventory, record received materials, and communicate with the office, the company states. For office users such as project managers and purchasing teams, the software solution enables more efficient control, approval, and processing of orders, inventory visibility, request for quotation generation, quote comparison, and invoice reconciliation. The solution is stated to provide a comprehensive view of purchasing activities and spend analysis in one place. Trimble Materials will be showcased at this year's Construction Financial Management Association National Conference, and will be available as part of the Trimble Construction One software suite for North American contractors. Last month, Trimble introduced a suite of new application programming interfaces for its cloud-hosted estimating software, Accubid Anywhere. Fusion21 appoints suppliers for $1.05bn Building Safety Framework

UK-based social enterprise Fusion21 has appointed suppliers to its Building Safety and Compliance Framework, valued at up to £800m ($1.05bn) over a four-year period. Overall, 145 specialist companies, with 81% classified as small and medium-sized enterprises, have obtained their places on the framework. In November 2024, Fusion 21 officially announced the renewal of its Building Safety and Compliance Framework, seeking bids from suppliers. This framework is designed to provide support for Fusion21 members in managing and maintaining building safety, as well as demonstrating compliance with regulations. It offers both regional and national coverage and has been established under the Public Contracts Regulations 2015. The framework includes a new lot specifically dedicated to sprinkler and mist systems. The Building Safety and Compliance Framework is divided into 12 distinct lots, covering a comprehensive range of services. These include asbestos surveying and consultancy, asbestos abatement and removal, legionella and water hygiene consultancy, and fire safety-related services such as surveying, risk assessments, and inspections. Passive fire protection, fire suppression systems, active fire safety, warden call and telehealth services, and electronic security are also integral parts of the framework. Fusion21 group executive director of operations Peter Francis said: "Our members continue to invest heavily to ensure the buildings they manage are safe. With the introduction of the Building Safety Act (BSA 2022), the responsibility to ensure building compliance has grown, and we're delighted to be able to continue supporting our members with this framework renewal as part of our 'big six' offer. 'Having listened to member and supplier feedback, we've created a new generation of the Building Safety and Compliance Framework, suitable for all building types across the public sector. 'Working with a team of technical procurement experts and prequalified suppliers, our members will benefit from a fast route to market and flexible call-off options. As with all Fusion21 frameworks, this latest framework enables our members to deliver social value they can see in communities, aligned with their organisational priorities." Trimble unveils new APIs for cloud-hosted estimating software

US-based technology company Trimble has introduced a suite of new application programming interfaces (APIs) for its cloud-hosted estimating software, Accubid Anywhere. These APIs are designed to streamline the collection, analysis, and sharing of data for electrical contractors, thereby improving estimating processes and collaboration throughout the construction life cycle. A suite of five Accubid Anywhere APIs offers a toolkit for estimators to integrate bid data into dashboards for enhanced analysis and reporting. The Project API provides detailed project lists while the Estimate API captures all estimate information for extraction into the users' enterprise resource platforms (ERPs). The Final Price API compares initial estimates with final project costs, the Extension API sends a bill of materials to other software, and the Bid Breakdown API facilitates detailed data retrieval and analysis. This automated API connectivity extends from estimating to other related systems such as ERPs, project management, and construction resource management, eliminating the need for manual data transfer. This integration allows for more collaboration and workflow management across various construction processes. Accubid Anywhere is claimed to offer robust estimating features, including integrated graphical takeoff, change order management, pricing, submittal management, and more. The APIs are currently available to North American customers who have an active Accubid Anywhere subscription. Trimble construction management systems vice-president Lawrence Smith said: "Estimates generate a high volume of valuable data that should be analysed and used in other workflows, but this data often gets trapped in the estimating system. "Using APIs to extract and connect data automatically to other systems means contractors don't have to import, export or manually retype the information. This improves efficiency and decision-making on both the project and operational level." In October 2024, Caterpillar and Trimble announced the continuation of their joint venture, which focuses on improving grade control technologies within the construction industry.
