Historic Des Moines streetcar building up for sale
DES MOINES, Iowa — At one time Des Moines had a mass-transit system of streetcars. The rails from those cars are mostly buried by time; however, one piece of streetcar lore remains near downtown. A small two-story building called a power station was one of several that provided the electricity to run the trains. The building near downtown was constructed in 1922. It was used for storage in recent years. The man who owned it passed away and now his children are looking to sell the property. Iowa House Republican leadership holding strong on its education funding proposal 'As far as I know it was, it was a generating station so they had all the electrical equipment generation equipment, and then lines would come out from here to power the streetcars,' said Matt Rowe, who along with his sister, Julie, is selling the building. 'You know it is a pretty interesting building and they clearly do not build things like this anymore and so you get a historic building with this kind of structure and story that goes with it and it seems really important that I get at least preserved.' The site is of interest from a historical standpoint to members of the Des Moines Streetcar group. 'I don't know how many of these power houses that they built were just nothing but generators and everything,' said Larry Ferguson, of the Des Moines Streetcar group. 'It provided power to the lines and there also was one on the southside, here, and there's one that was off of Merle Hay in Johnston.' People who live in the neighborhood are hoping something is done with the building, either it's torn down, or renovated. Having an abandoned building in a family neighborhood has attracted people looking for trouble said one neighbor. There has been some interest in purchasing the building, but nothing confirmed at this point. For more information on the building call or text Julie at 347-556-1896. Material witness warrant issued in deadly Des Moines hit-and-run case
DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are still seeking a man wanted for questioning in connection with a deadly October hit-and-run crash on Des Moines' south side and now a material witness warrant has been issued. The Des Moines Police Department is looking for 32-year-old Renato Virves, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. High winds turn controlled burn into grass fire in Indianola, fire department says Police said Virves was the owner of a van involved in a hit-and-run crash in the 800 block of Army Post Road on October 9, 2024. The eastbound van hit three pedestrians who were crossing the street to the south. Forty-two-year-old Justin Romaine died from injuries received in the crash. Police located the van shortly after the crash but no driver was found. DMPD previously asked the public for help locating Virves and investigators have continued to follow leads. World Food & Music Festival ranked among top five cultural festivals by USA Today
DES MOINES, Iowa — The World Food and Music Festival is ranked number five in USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards for Best Cultural Festival. The festival beat out top contenders from states such as Florida, New York, and Hawaii. The ranking was based on a public voting process. Adventureland Inn permanently shuttering its doors after 50 years USA Today said, 'The World Food and Music Festival highlights international cuisine with a diverse group of food and drink vendors, as well as interactive culinary programming. Live performances, such as Irish dancing and taiko drumming, add to the fun and ambience, truly making this event a feast for the senses.' Amelia Klatt the Director of Events for the Greater Des Moines Partnership, said in a statement, 'Being recognized as one of the nation's top cultural festivals is an amazing honor. This recognition reflects the rich heritage, vibrant flavors and unique cultural experiences that make the World Food & Music Festival special. We are grateful for the support from our community and visitors who celebrate with us every year.' This year's annual event will be held in Des Moines' Western Gateway Park from Friday, August 22nd through Sunday, August 24th. Des Moines Arts Festival announces artists for 2025 event
DES MOINES, Iowa — Recent warm weather has many eagerly awaiting Spring and festival season and Des Moines is ready. The Des Moines Arts Festival released a list of 195 artists from 31 different states who will be at this year's annual event. Artists were selected through a rigorous jury process. Jurors previewed more than 5,700 images in a variety of mediums submitted by 953 applicants across 43 states. Thirteen artists are returning this year after winning awards back in 2024. World Food & Music Festival ranked among top five cultural festivals by USA Today 'Our jury process honors the quality and distinctiveness of the artists' work, which is why the Des Moines Arts Festival is regarded as one of the best in the country. Each jury brings a unique perspective, and that variation is reflected in each festival,' said Stephen King, the Executive Director of the Des Moines Arts Festival. In addition to the professional visual artists, the jury compiled a list of artists to exhibit as part of the emerging Iowa artist and emerging artist programs.
