Local Irish dancer qualifies for World Irish Dance Championship
(WIVT/WBGH) – A local Irish dancer is stepping, clicking, and shuffling her way to the Emerald Isle next month. Kimmy Botsford is a junior at Maine-Endwell High School. She recently qualified for the World Irish Dance Championship, placing 9th in the regional and 20th in the national competitions. The world championship will be held in Dublin, Ireland. Botsford has been Irish dancing since she was three years old. Growing up, her father was in the pipe band. She says she was inspired by the Irish dancers she'd see at his events. Botsford attended the world championship last year in Scotland. She says her goal this year is to improve her skill and enjoy the moment. 'My mindset is better so I'm less, I'm still nervous, but I know what to expect this time. My goals are just to improve from last year. I'm not looking to be world champion or anything, I'm just wanting to make improvements and see where I can get with it,' said Botsford. Botsford says aside from the competition, she is looking forward to meeting new friends and exploring the country with her family. The World Irish Dance Championship will be held from April 13 to April 20. Botsford is expected to compete on April 16. Stellar Human expands to new downtown Binghamton location
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local clothing store owner is hoping that his expansion can serve as inspiration to others who may be trying to overcome difficult challenges. LaRue Simmons, owner of Stellar Human, was joined by Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham and representatives of the Greater Binghamton Chamber today to cut the ribbon on the store's new location. The vintage clothing store has moved into one half of the former Ellis Brothers Furniture storefront in the Courtyard section of Washington Street. Simmons first opened the store on Robinson Street four years ago. He says that by moving downtown, he hopes to increase his visibility and that he has already seen increased foot traffic since opening last month. Simmons, who grew up in Johnson City and graduated from Seton Catholic, says he battled alcoholism and addiction for many years, but has now been sober for 7 years. 'Through sobriety, I've learned so much and gained so much with this being one of the biggest things. One of my biggest goals is for others to see, who might be struggling with the same kind of issues, to know that it is possible to not just recover, but to go above and beyond,' said Simmons. Simmons also plans to host events at the store by moving all of the clothing racks into storage. Last weekend, there was a musical performance and this Friday there will be a comedy show at 7. Store hours are Monday through Wednesday from noon until 6 and Thursday through Sunday noon until 8. For more information, check out The Stellar Human on Facebook. Town of Vestal launches new website
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Town of Vestal has a new website that promises to be more attractive, more informative and more interactive. Supervisor Maria Sexton says she's fulfilling a campaign promise to improve the town's digital platform in order to boost transparency and encourage resident engagement. Sexton says the town contracted with a national firm called Apptegy to design and maintain the site. She says the new site makes it much easier for individual departments to get important information out to residents. Sexton says they're currently building out their individual pages. She says the website will also be able to host resident surveys and there's a place to submit feedback about the new design. Sexton says she reads every one of the messages that are sent and replies when able. 'That amount of communication, that ability to do that, is huge for me. I can directly hear how people feel about the website and what they want,' said Sexton. Along with the website, there's a new mobile app that residents can download and sign up for a variety of push alerts. Sexton says the first such push alert went out today regarding construction that is impacting traffic on Jensen Road. That information is also posted at the top of the website. Sexton says the site will also have video recordings of town board meetings as well as agendas and supporting documents.
