Jordan Stolz finishes speed skating worlds with two silvers, one bronze

American Jordan Stolz took silver in the 1500m to finish the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships with three medals — two silvers and one bronze — in the three races that he won in 2023 and 2024. Norway's Peder Kongshaug won the 1500m in 1 minute, 44.64 seconds in front of a home crowd at Hamar's Viking Ship. Stolz, a 20-year-old from Wisconsin, finished seven hundredths behind, nearly making up a 68-hundredth gap to Kongshaug's 1100m split time on the last lap. He has now won nine medals in nine career World Single Distances Championships races — the 500m, 1000m and 1500m in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Stolz previously took silver in Friday's 500m -- 16 hundredths behind Dutchman Jenning de Boo -- and bronze in Saturday's 1000m -- 21 hundredths behind Dutchman Joep Wennemars. SPEED SKATING: Full Results 'Given the circumstances leading into the competition, I can be happy with this one,' Stolz said of Sunday's silver to Dutch broadcaster NOS. 'I thought I'd be further behind today. I didn't expect to be that close to winning.' Stolz's season was interrupted in February by bouts of pneumonia and strep throat. He first felt sick Feb. 5 and missed nearly two weeks of training during a break between World Cup races. He won his first three races back on the World Cup from Feb. 21-22. The following weekend, he withdrew from his last two World Cup races before World Championships, citing tiredness from overtraining in coming back from the illnesses. Stolz's coach, Bob Corby, deemed Stolz at 98% last Tuesday going into worlds. Stolz said after Friday's 500m silver that the setbacks last month 'probably' played a role in his performance. On Saturday, he felt he lacked some power in his legs. 'The preparation, we did the best we could, being the circumstances, but some things you just can't change, and there's limited time to be able to fix things,' he said Saturday. Stolz also alluded to the totality of the November-to-March World Cup campaign. Stolz had his busiest season yet on the circuit with 21 races, including winning his first 14 in a row. 'It's hard to be able to skate all of them (World Cups) in one year and have still good results late into March,' he said. 'I'm not so far out of shape that I can't build it back in the summer and be back to where I was.' If Stolz makes the podium in all three races again at the Milan Cortina Games next February, he can become the fifth American to win three individual medals at one Winter Olympics. Also Sunday, the Netherlands won two more golds (Joy Beune, 1500m, and Marijke Groenewoud, mass start) for eight total titles and 18 total medals, tying its own record in both categories. The Dutch women won six golds and 12 total medal out of eight events. Davide Ghiotto earned his third consecutive 10,000m world title to give 2026 Olympic host Italy three golds at a single global championship for the first time. Ghiotto's triumph came one day after Francesca Lollobrigida won the women's 5000m and Andrea Giovannini won the men's mass start. Nick Zaccardi,

Jordan Stolz takes bronze at speed skating worlds in tight 1000m with rival Dutch

HAMAR, Norway — Jordan Stolz took bronze in the 1000m at the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships behind one familiar Dutch rival and one new one. Stolz, a 20-year-old from Wisconsin, earned his eighth medal in eight career individual World Championships races, one day after taking silver in the 500m behind Dutchman Jenning de Boo. On Saturday, it was Dutchman Joep Wennemars who won the 1000m in his debut World Championships — 16 hundredths ahead of de Boo and 21 hundredths ahead of Stolz. Another American, Cooper McLeod, was fourth, one day after taking 500m bronze. Stolz swept the 500m, 1000m and 1500m at worlds in 2023, becoming the first man to win three individual events at one worlds (which debuted in 1996). He repeated the triple gold in 2024. SPEED SKATING WORLDS: Full Results | Broadcast Schedule Now he's being challenged by the emerging de Boo, a 21-year-old who has been strong all season, and Wennemars, the 22-year-old son of two-time world 1000m champion Erben Wennemars. Stolz contracted pneumonia and strep throat in early February, then withdrew from his last World Cup races before worlds from March 1-2 due to tiredness from overtraining in returning from the illnesses. His coach, Bob Corby, deemed Stolz's readiness at 98% on Tuesday. 'Everything that's happened in the last month has probably played into it,' Stolz said Friday of his 500m skate. 'I felt like I got all of my power into the ice. It's just going to take a little bit more time to build it back. I wasn't ready for this.' Earlier Saturday, Olympic gold medalist Miho Takagi of Japan repeated as world champion in the 1000m, prevailing by 23 hundredths over 500m world champion Femke Kok of the Netherlands. Kok's countrywoman Jutta Leerdam took bronze. Worlds end Sunday with the 1500m races (including Stolz), the men's 10,000m and the women's mass start, starting at 7 a.m. ET, live on Peacock. U.S. takes team pursuit gold, Jordan Stolz silver, Cooper McLeod bronze at speed skating worlds

HAMAR, Norway — The U.S. won a medal of every color in men's events, including team pursuit gold, at the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships on Friday. Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran combined to win the U.S.' first title in the men's team pursuit since 2011. They beat silver medalist Italy by a sizable 1.93 seconds in the eight-lap event. Jordan Stolz and Cooper McLeod added silver and bronze medals in the 500m won by Dutchman Jenning de Boo. It's the first time two American men made the same individual world podium since Shani Davis and Trevor Marsicano in 2009 in the 1000m and 1500m. De Boo became the first skater to beat Stolz in a World Single Distances Championships race after Stolz swept the 500m, 1000m and 1500m at his first two worlds in 2023 and 2024. SPEED SKATING WORLDS: Full Results | Broadcast Schedule Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands went one-two in the women's 500m, with Kok earning her third consecutive world title in the event. Olympic gold medalist Erin Jackson was fifth, 23 hundredths behind bronze medalist Kim Min-Sun of South Korea. Going back to the men's team pursuit, Dawson, Lehman and Cepuran added a world title to their Olympic bronze medals from 2022 and world record from 2024. The U.S. has won silver and bronze at the Olympics in team pursuits, but never Olympic gold. The event made its Olympic debut in 2006. In the men's 500m on Friday, de Boo broke a 17-year-old track record at the Viking Ship to overtake Stolz and McLeod, who were in first and second place going into the last pair. De Boo clocked 34.24 seconds, edging Stolz by .14 and McLeod, who earned his first individual world medal, by .28. Stolz, a 20-year-old from Wisconsin, in 2023 became the first man to win three individual events at one worlds and the youngest skater to win an individual world title. He repeated the 500m, 1000m and 1500m triple in 2024, plus won a men's record 18 consecutive World Cup races from Feb. 2, 2024, through Feb. 1, 2025. De Boo emerged this season as Stolz's closest challenger, then beat Stolz for the first time on the senior level in Stolz's most recent World Cup 500m on Feb. 28. Stolz next races the 1000m on Saturday and the 1500m on Sunday. He has been more dominant in those races this season — 10 wins in 11 starts — than in the 500m. Worlds continue Saturday with the women's and men's 1000m, the women's 5000m and the men's mass start, starting at 9 a.m. ET, live on Peacock. CNBC airs highlights at 1 p.m. Nick Zaccardi,
