15 veterans receive marked graves, ceremonies a century after their service
DES MOINES, Iowa — Fifteen Civil War veterans received marked graves and a military ceremony more than a century after their service had ended. Taps rang out at the Glendale Cemetery on Thursday afternoon in honor of 15 Civil War veterans who didn't receive marked graves when they were first buried. Researchers and volunteers discovered the graves and went on a hunt to locate documents about who was buried there and what their stories were. During the ceremony, each soldier was named and brief details of their lives were shared. 'Johnston Lotahocker, he was a machinist, brass and ironworker. Joseph Davis was a stone and brick mason. Henry A Siders, and I love this one. Even in 1940, nearly 40 years after he served, he lived his occupation as a soldier,' said Mike Rowley, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Iowa Member. Bob Niffenegger, a veteran and retired Des Moines firefighter, discovered some of the unmarked stones and made it his mission to find them. Governor's bill tackling doctor shortage passes House and Senate 'Poor is the nation that has no heroes, and poorer still is the nation that has heroes and doesn't remember and does not honor them. I think it's my obligation and our obligation to remember the people that made our country safe and made it what it is,' said Niffenegger. Rowley says it starts with a name, then they track down their service, look for family and other traces the soldiers left throughout their lifetime. Sometimes it takes days, and sometimes weeks. 'There are so many stories here, you know, from the happiest, most harrowing stories to the most tragic,' said Rowley. 'And I think we found a little bit of all of that in over the course of the year.' The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the General Society of the War of 1812 in Iowa, the Sons, Daughters and Children of the American Revolution, and MOLLUS were just some of the organizations that attended and honored their service. Rowley says veteran associations across the state are all dedicated to maintaining cemeteries and graves as well as recovering those who may have been lost through time. Niffenegger and Rowley are working on recovering an unmarked grave belonging to a World War ll veteran. Metro News: Dizzying work going on at Des Moines parks! Trump urges Ukraine to accept peace talks with Putin ‘immediately' — without cease-fire
President Trump on Sunday urged Ukraine to 'immediately' meet with Russia for peace talks without first securing a cease-fire deal — just as Vladimir Putin has suggested. The Russian president has proposed direct talks with Kyiv on Thursday in Turkey aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, which has spanned for more than three years since the Kremlin's invasion. 'Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly! 4 President Trump on Sunday called on Ukraine to 'immediately' agree to meet with Russian negotiators without conditions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded online that he is open to holding the powow with Moscow, but he showed trepidation given Putin's repeated refusal to make any concessions in the stalled peace talks brokered by the US. Zelensky and his officials stressed that a cease-fire needs to be reached first and foremost before any talks could commence between Kyiv and Moscow. 'We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings,' Zelensky wrote in the statement. 4 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky maintains that a cease-fire should go into effect before the two sides meet. 'An unconditional ceasefire first and, during it, move into comprehensive peace discussions. Not the other way round,' Kellogg wrote on X after Putin's proposal. 4 Ukrainian first responders work to put out a blaze in Zaporizhzhia after a Russian drone strike last week. REUTERS French President Emmanuel Macron said Putin's sudden push for peace talks without a cease-fire was proof that he was stalling and 'looking for a way out' after sanction threats from the West. Putin issued his proposal a day after Trump and European leaders threatened 'massive sanctions' if Russia didn't agree to a 30-day truce by Monday. Zelensky said the cease-fire must be 'full and unconditional' or else the European allies would slap additional energy and banking sanctions on Moscow.

Donald Trump calls for immediate talks between Ukraine and Russia
US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump has called for immediate talks between Ukraine and Russia to negotiate a potential ceasefire agreement. In a post to Truth Social, Trump wrote, 'President Putin of Russia doesn't want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH.' He said that Ukraine should agree to this meeting 'immediately'. 'At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!' Trump said that he is 'starting to doubt' that Ukraine will make a deal with Russia, adding that Putin is 'too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll', which, he said, could not have been won without the US' involvement. On Friday, Russia held extravagant celebrations on its annual Victory Day marking the anniversary of defeating Nazi Germany in World War Two, where it hosted several foreign leaders – including the head of Slovakia, an EU member state. Advertisement 'HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!' Trump concluded. Putin this morning proposed restarting direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on 15 May, 'without preconditions', a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed while demanding a ceasefire take effect before negotiations begin. Speaking to reporters in the Kremlin in the early hours of this morning, Putin proposed to 'restart' peace talks Russia and Ukraine held in 2022. 'We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine,' Putin said, adding that he does not rule out agreeing to a ceasefire later, in the course of direct talks with Ukraine. Yesterday, a number of EU leaders – including UK prime minister Keir Starmer – met in Kyiv and called upon Russian president Vladimir Putin to agree to a 30-day ceasefire beginning tomorrow. The leaders of France, the UK, Germany, and Poland all spoke to Trump over the phone yesterday where they discussed peace talks. Zelenskyy urged Russia to accept a 30-day truce proposed by Kyiv's allies, adding he expected Putin to attend peace talks in Turkey. 'We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy,' Zelensky said on X, adding he 'will be waiting for Putin' in Turkey on Thursday. Zelensky to travel to Turkey for potential talks with Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday he will travel to Turkey later this week to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a "necessary basis for diplomacy" to end the war. Why it matters: If the meeting takes place, it will be the first time the two leaders have met since the Russia-Ukraine war began more than three years ago. Driving the news: Zelensky reiterated his expectation for the ceasefire in his post on X, where he announced his visit to Turkey. "I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses," he wrote. Last week, President Trump called for a "30-day unconditional ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine and threatened sanctions if it is "not respected." On Saturday, Zelensky and the leaders of several NATO countries spoke with Trump over the phone and stressed they are ready for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting Monday. During the 15-minute call, Zelensky and the NATO leaders told Trump that if a ceasefire is agreed upon, Ukraine is ready to begin direct peace talks with Russia. Putin responded to the terms later that evening. And though he didn't accept the ceasefire proposal, he said he is ready to begin direct talks with Ukraine on Thursday. What they're saying: Hours before Zelensky's agreement to meet Putin in Instanbul, Trump called on Ukraine's president to accept the terms in a post to Truth Social. Trump stressed that if Ukraine participates in these talks it will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible. If it is not, Europe and the U.S., will know where things stand and respond accordingly, he added. "I'm starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin, who's too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll, which could not have been won (not even close!) without the United States of America. HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!," Trump wrote.

Zelensky agrees to Putin-proposed meeting in Turkey after Trump demands they negotiate end of war
Volodymyr Zelensky has said he will be waiting for Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday, after Donald Trump insisted Ukraine agreed to talks with Russia. The U.S. President demanded that Ukrainian officials 'immediately' agree to meet with their Russian counterparts to negotiate a possible end to the 'bloodbath' war waged on the country by Putin. Trump was responding to the Russian leader's proposal on Sunday for a meeting this coming week in Istanbul. In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: 'President Putin of Russia doesn't want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH.' He continued: 'Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY. At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly! Trump added: 'I'm starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin, who's too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll, which could not have been won (not even close!) without the United States of America. HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!' It is unclear whether such a meeting, were it to take place, would include the Russian leader himself. Shortly after the president's post went live, Zelensky said he would go to Turkey. He wrote on X: 'We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses.' It is not known whether delegations from the U.S. or the European 'coalition of the willing' will also participate in the talks. Putin proposed direct talks with Ukraine from the Kremlin in the early hours of Sunday, saying they should be aimed at bringing a durable peace. The Russian leader, who has offered few concessions towards ending the conflict so far, said the talks in Istanbul on May 15 will be aimed at eliminating the root causes of the war and restoring a 'long-term, lasting peace' rather than simply a pause for rearmament. 'We are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions,' Putin said. 'We offer the Kyiv authorities to resume negotiations already on Thursday, in Istanbul.' 'Our proposal, as they say, is on the table. The decision is now up to the Ukrainian authorities and their curators, who are guided, it seems, by their personal political ambitions, and not by the interests of their peoples.' Putin's proposal came hours after major European powers demanded on Saturday in Kyiv that Putin agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire or face 'massive' new sanctions. The Russian leader dismissed what he said was the attempt by some European powers to lay down 'ultimatums.' This is a developing story, more follows…
