Strawberry Moon: When to view June's full moon
Skywatchers are in for a treat on Tuesday, 10 June, as June's full moon – the Strawberry Moon – reaches peak illumination at on Wednesday, 11 June at 21:44 (SA time). However, despite the name, the moon won't appear pink. The 'Strawberry Moon' traces back to Native American tribes, who named it after the short, sweet wild strawberry harvest season. This year's Strawberry Moon is the lowest full moon in nearly 20 years, thanks to the moon's 18.6-year orbital cycle. Because it hovers low on the horizon, Earth's atmosphere filters the light, giving the moon a warmer, reddish-orange hue. How best to watch: Look to the eastern horizon on June 10 evening for moonrise on for moonrise Best viewed from dark, elevated spots away from city lights Expect the warmest glow just after moonrise when it's closest to the horizon Pro tip: Bring binoculars or a camera for this low-hanging lunar moment – it won't return until 2043. April's Pink Moon. Date, timing and what to know about the micromoon this weekend
The full moon will illuminate Michigan skies Saturday night, but it may not be as impressive as other full moons in 2025. The Pink Moon that rises Saturday will be a "micromoon" and look smaller than average as the satellite reaches its farthest point from Earth in its orbit, said. Here's what to know about the Pink Moon. The Pink Moon, April's full moon, will reach peak illumination April 12. The previous full moon was March's Worm Moon, which featured a total lunar eclipse. Clear skies will ensure optimal viewing, so keep an eye on the weather forecast. The full moon will peak in the evening at 8:22 p.m. How did the Pink Moon get its name? The name Pink Moon comes from pink wildflowers, Phlox subulata or moss phlox, that bloom during the season, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. You may have noticed the moon will occasionally take on a dramatic shade of orange or red in the night sky. That's because of how sunlight strikes the moon's surface after passing through the atmosphere. When the moon moves into the inner part of Earth's shadow, or umbra, according to NASA, some of the sunlight entering Earth's skies scatters before reaching the moon's surface. Colors with shorter wavelengths, such as blues and violets, scatter more easily than colors with longer wavelengths, which include red and orange. No, the Pink Moon is a micromoon. A micromoon occurs when a full moon aligns with the apogee of its orbit, the farthest point in the moon's orbit from Earth, NASA said. The Flower Moon will peak May 12, 2025. March 2025: A look back at last month's weather
Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month: Warmest High Temperature: 79 degrees (March 19th) Coolest High Temperature: 32 degrees (March 6th) Coolest Low Temperature: 16 degrees (March 2nd) Warmest Low Temperature: 58 degrees (March 29th and 30th) March was primarily an above-average month temperature-wise. Seven of the thirty-one days reached 70 degrees during a month where our average highs are in the 50s. The peak of the warmth culminated on March 19th, when Beckley reached 79 degrees, tying the old daily record. That's just a few degrees off the all-time March high temperature of 85 degrees set on March 28th, 2020. Vegetables to plant in spring For the month, our average temperature in March was 47.3 degrees, which was about 4.4 degrees warmer than average. That's not quite warm enough to reach the top ten warmest March months on record for Beckley, but it's not far off. March 2025 was a historically dry month in Beckley, ranking as the sixth driest March on record, following the wettest February on record. On average, Beckley receives just over four inches of rain, but March 2025 featured less than half of that total, coming in at 1.65″ of rain. Combined with very warm and at times breezy conditions and we had brush fires pop up in southern West Virginia and Virginia periodically during the month. Not a single day featured a half inch of rain in Beckley during the month of March. How to protect your home from brush fires Wettest Day: 0.48″ (March 5th) Despite the dry month in March, Beckley is still well above normal for rainfall so far in 2025 due to the historically wet month of February and still above-average precipitation during the month of January. Snowiest Day: 0.5″ (March 6th) Monthly Snowfall: 1.0″ (7.9 inches BELOW average) Snowfall was very limited due to above-average conditions and a dry pattern overall during the month of March. Beckley received only about 12% of its usual snow for the month. That enabled Beckley to fall slightly below average in snowfall for the season after above average snowfall during the first half of the snowy season. The full moon for March is the Worm Moon, which took place on March 14th. Generally warm and dry conditions led to good viewing opportunities. In addition, brush fire activity led to a bit of a smoky hue around the moon at times when it was near full. Launched in 2022, #WeatherTogether is a dedicated community photo album hosted by 59News and StormTracker 59 to allow viewers to submit weather photos directly to us that we can share on all our platforms on-air or online. These photos are also showcased in our web-based photo album on our site for all to see and enjoy! Any photo of interesting weather, storm damage, snowfall, pets playing in puddles or snow and the likes are all welcomed! We hope to use this to showcase the beauty of the two Virginias through the eyes of our viewers and the vastly dynamic weather we see because we think there is no place more beautiful than here.
