Discovering the Englishman who invented Parisian Haute Couture
Born in Lincolnshire in 1825, Worth crossed the Channel with nothing but a dream and ended up dressing royalty and redefining what it meant to be fashionable. Best-selling author Stephen Clarke has just penned a new book on Worth – "Charles Frederick Worth, the Englishman Who Invented Parisian Haute Couture" – lifting the veil on the man who stitched the French fashion system together. From day wear to opera coats, tea gowns to ballgowns, Worth didn't just design clothes –he invented the modern fashion industry: seasonal collections, live models, runway shows and the designer label itself. Don't miss this captivating look at the Englishman who crowned Paris as the world's fashion capital and whose legacy still shapes what we wear today. The exhibition runs until September, leaving plenty of time to discover the forgotten outsider who dressed the world.

PETA offers up to $5,000 for tips leading to dog killer
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the gunning down of the dog found in Donaldson on May 25. 'This dog endured the agony of being shot over and over and the terror of being abandoned in the woods to bleed out, and whoever attacked him is still at large,' said PETA Senior Director of Media Relations Heather Carlson in a statement. 'Nothing can undo this dog's suffering, but at least the person who caused it can be brought to justice — and PETA is urging anyone with information to come forward immediately before they hurt someone else,' she said. While on a walking trail in a secluded wooded area off Fountain Road Sunday, a family found a recently killed dog, described as a healthy adult black Labrador retriever mix around seven years old, authorities said. The intact male dog, wearing a rusted chain-type collar, was found around 1:30 p.m., police said. It appeared the dog had been shot at least seven times, said Becky Worth, shelter manager for Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, who went to the scene. Bullet casings, which are believed to be from a .45 caliber weapon, were found at the scene. Other than the rusty collar he had no other identifying items, Worth said. He was not microchipped. Worth said she and Shannon Shuttlesworth, vice president of the board of directors of Ruth Steinert, walked about 1/4 a mile down a path to find the dog after a family made the gruesome discovery. The lab mix was found in the leaves, still bleeding from his wounds, Worth said. 'It looks like they shot him in the legs and went down his body,' she said of the multiple bullet wounds. The dog's fur was clean, his nails trimmed and teeth in good condition. Locally, multiple pledges totaling $1,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest in the case have been posted on a concerned resident's Facebook page. Worth said Thursday she was unaware of the reward from PETA. 'I think that's pretty amazing,' she said.. A trooper said Thursday that state police is aware of the reward offered by PETA, and the case is now under the jurisdiction of the crime unit. Those with information about this dog or the injuries it sustained are urged to call the state police at 570-754-4600, or Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA at 570-345-3540.

Dog gunned down in remote Frailey Twp.
FRAILEY TWP. — State police at Schuylkill Haven are asking for the public's help in identifying who is responsible for shooting a dog in Donaldson. While on a walking trail in a secluded wooded area off Fountain Road Sunday, a family found the recently killed dog, described as a healthy adult black Labrador retriever mix, authorities said. The intact male dog, wearing a rusted chain-type collar, was found around 1:30 p.m., police said. It appeared the dog had been shot at least seven times, said Becky Worth, shelter manager for Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, who went to the scene. Bullet casings, which are believed to be from a .45 caliber weapon, were found at the scene, Worth said. All appeared to be from the same gun. The dog's body was not yet stiff from death, and other than the rusty collar he had no other identifying items, Worth said. He was not microchipped. Worth said she and Shannon Shuttlesworth, vice president of the board of directors of Ruth Steinert, walked about 1/4 a mile down a path to find the dog after a family made the gruesome discovery. The lab mix, estimated to be between seven and eight years old, was found in the leaves, still bleeding from his wounds, Worth said. 'It looks like they shot him in the legs and went down his body,' she said of the multiple bullet wounds. The dog's fur was clean, his nails trimmed and teeth in good condition. 'He didn't appear to be in bad health,' she said. 'I just don't know how someone can live with themselves,' she said of whoever is responsible for the dog's shooting death. A post on the shelter's Facebook page surmises the dog might have been excited to go for a walk on that Sunday. 'Shame on you. Shame on every single person who was there,' the post reads. 'Shame on anyone who knew and stayed silent. You didn't just kill a dog — you betrayed a soul who only knew how to love,' the post reads. The shelter goes on to say the death of the dog will not be forgotten. 'We are heartbroken. We are disgusted. And we are furious. This kind of cruelty is inhuman, and it will not be ignored. You will remember his name. And you will remember ours. Because we will not stop. We will not let this go. Justice will be served.' Dealing with disturbing cases elicits strong emotions for animal welfare workers, Worth said Tuesday. 'It's hard. It's really hard,' she said. Multiple pledges totaling $1,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest in the case have been posted on a concerned resident's Facebook page. Contact state police with any information about the dog and its death by calling 570-754-4600. All information will be kept confidential. Donations are being accepted toward the cost of cremating the dog. To donate, call the shelter at 570-345-3540, stop by the shelter at 18 Wertz Drive, Pine Grove. The investigation is continuing, police said.

In photos: Check out designs by Charles Frederick Worth, the father of haute couture
. This is only the second retrospective of House of Worth ever held, 60 years after the first in New York. (Above and top) An electric green-and-navy-blue tea gown made for the French socialite the countess Élisabeth Greffulhe in 1896-97. . An evening gown of large white lilies against black velvet, known as the Robe aux lys, also made for by the countess Greffulhe. The dress was embellished with pearls, sequins, rhinestones and silver thread. . In the 1850s, Worth began to sew tags into his designs, bearing his name. This made him, essentially, the inventor of the 'fashion label'. This — and his dramatic designs — is part of why historians consider him the father of couture. . Another thing Worth did differently that changed the fashion business, was create ready-to-try-on gowns at a time when aristocratic women generally dictated styles to their dressmakers. (Above right) The House of Worth in Paris catered to the who's who of the fashion capital for decades. It lived on long after its founder's death in 1895, and only shut in 1956. An attempt to revive it in the late 1990s, however, failed. The market was too crowded by then. . The French Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, was a prominent patron.
